Yoshinkan Aikido: 06/01/2003 - 07/01/2003

A training journal of my experiences at the Brisbane Dojo of Yoshinkan Aikido. June 28, 2003. Grading went well and it was the largest grading the dojo has ever done! There were 20 groups that graded and the whole grading lasted approx. 5 hours! A long time to sit in seiza. My 6th kyu shinsa went well and my partner was also grading for the same level. I have never met my. Partner until today so it was also a test to work in harmony with each other. I have trained with the other guys. June 23, 2003.

A training journal of my experiences at the Brisbane Dojo of Yoshinkan Aikido. November 28, 2003. I didn't have to grade this month but I attend training a couple of nights to look at what is required for 3rd Kyu. There are a lot of new techniques, particularly Ushiro techniques. These involve being grabbed from behind. I haven't had to do these before so I am enjoying the challenge of learning these. So far, they have all involved wrist grabs from behind. I'll let you know what it's like! This month on ...

A training journal of my experiences at the Brisbane Dojo of Yoshinkan Aikido. July 19, 2003. I have not trained for nearly 3 weeks. Unfortunately I have had other commitments arise in my life which have to take priority. I don't think I will make grading for this month, but that's OK. The grades aren't important, just the knowledge. In the long run I will continue with training and learning, I will keep improving. I miss the dojo. OSU. A training journal of my experiences at the Brisbane Dojo of Yoshinkan Aikido. April 25, 2003. Training has recommenced this week after Easter holidays. Last night we worked on nikajo again. What a devastating technique! It is amazing how once the wrist and elbow are locked it is impossible to resist against this lock. The pain is intense and you must go down. I enjoy performing this lock and I have taken to it quite quickly. Posted by Herb Bana @ Friday, April 25, 2003. April 21, 2003. At the moment the...

A training journal of my experiences at the Brisbane Dojo of Yoshinkan Aikido. May 27, 2003. Ikkajo is a fascinating technique. Last night Sensei demonstrated the power of ki. He was demonstrating the Ikkajo technique and I was uke. When I was on the mat with me elbow pinned all Sensei had to do was just breathe out and I could feel the lock on my elbow joint. As Sensei was demonstrating the pressure was applied just firmly enough for me to feel but it was still amazing to experience. May 24, 2003. I was...

A training journal of my experiences at the Brisbane Dojo of Yoshinkan Aikido. September 28, 2003. The Sogo Shinsa is over and everything went well. I only hesitated on the Yonkajo technique once, apart from that I didn't make any major mistakes. I feel good about the grading and I will find out on Tuesday if I have passed. All in all it was a good day and I will post my results next week. OSU. Posted by Herb Bana @ Sunday, September 28, 2003. September 19, 2003. My wrists are sore! I am enjoying the tra...

A training journal of my experiences at the Brisbane Dojo of Yoshinkan Aikido. October 29, 2003. Everything went fine. I passed Jun 3rd Kyu. I didn't have any hassles on the day. It all clicked perfectly and the grading went smoothly. Now I have to wait for Sogo Shinsa until I can grade again. That will be 3rd Kyu (brown belt). Now I'm getting into the good stuff! Posted by Herb Bana @ Wednesday, October 29, 2003. October 25, 2003. Today I am going to grade for Jun 3rd Kyu. October 18, 2003. As I get tir...

A training journal of my experiences at the Brisbane Dojo of Yoshinkan Aikido. August 08, 2003. I have returned to training. It was good to return to the dojo. Training is in full swing for the 8th Annual Demonstration on 24 August 2003. I am definately not prepared for the demo as I have missed too much training, but it will still be. Good practice to train for it. I doubt if I will get involved but if I can help in some way I will. If you are in the city you should come along, it will be worth seeing.

A training journal of my experiences at the Brisbane Dojo of Yoshinkan Aikido. December 28, 2003. Of course I passed. I don't want to sound like I'm bragging but I did feel good about the grading. That's put down to excellent preparation. I was trained by 3rd Dans for the two weeks leading up to the day and I trained hard with my fellow aikidoka. We all passed and now we wear the brown belt. Things will level out for me a bit now. I can only grade now at Sogo Shinsa which is every three months. I have ha...
