Hanoi to Bangkok

Thursday, November 24, 2011. We got into town around 7 pm last night. Loaded our stuff into our rooms and headed out for a meal. I like Thailand. It feels good and there is less poverty and ravage of war here. It has a completely different feel than Vietnam or Cambodia and is much less congested and cleaner. There are even freeways here! Today, those of us still in town visited the palace which is absolutely incredible. I felt like I was in Siam! Which is exactly what it was. Tuesday, November 22, 2011.

Hanoi to Bangkok: Hi Chi Min City day 1

http://www.joread.com/2011/11/hi-chi-min-city-day-1.html

Friday, November 11, 2011. Hi Chi Min City day 1. We arrived in HCMC around 6 am and waited at the hotel for breakfast at 7. We came back to HCMC on the bus and went to lunch in a local restaurant and came back to the hotel to check in and have a shower. My room is about 10 x 10, has a bathroom and no window. It is a sleeping room. Cyclosporine in front of me in the rain. Vendor selling bananas on the side walk. Ceiling in the post office. Map in the post office. Telephone booths in the post office.

Hanoi to Bangkok: Flooding on Hoi An

http://www.joread.com/2011/11/flooding-on-hoi.html

Monday, November 7, 2011. Flooding on Hoi An. This morning the water was up to the hotel entrance. The train has stopped running and we are here for another day. We may fly out if we can get to the airport and if we can get flights to HCMC. I'm not concerned and glad I am traveling with a tour leader rather than solo. The beginnings of chicken vegetable soup. Shredding a green mango for green mango salad. Here comes more rain! I'll keep in touch as long as we've got power and wifi. Tke care and stay safe!

Hanoi to Bangkok: Last day in Siem Reap

http://www.joread.com/2011/11/weve-been-here-for-2-days.html

Tuesday, November 22, 2011. Last day in Siem Reap. We've been here for 2 days. The hotel is on a busy street with a gravel road but the rest of the town is very clean and there are a lot of new hotels. Yesterday we visited the temples at Ankor Wat. They are incredible! No wonder the place was so empty! That is almost a weeks salary for the average person here. Tomorrow we head for Bangkok an 8 hour bus ride arriving hopefully sometime between 4 and 7. The road is clear so there should be no problem&#...

Hanoi to Bangkok: Leaving Hanoi

http://www.joread.com/2011/11/leaving-hanoi.html

Wednesday, November 2, 2011. We're waiting to catch the night train to Hue. Packs are loaded in the foyer and we're filling the cooler with beer, wine and champagne. It's a birthday night for one of the boys and the group will be celebrating. Some of the girls headed off for manicures and pedicures ($5 US) enjoyed lunch at a wonderful restaurant. Travelling Around: December 30 Xichen and Valladold

http://joread.blogspot.com/2011/01/december-30-xichen-and-valladold.html

Saturday, January 1, 2011. December 30 Xichen and Valladold. We've finished breakfast and On our way to the ATM then will hop a collective to Tulum. There are ruins there and quite a few street vendors along with a Haag'n das and Subway sandwich bar. We looked at each other turned around and headed XOR the collective to Akumal. We got back around 1 and the wind was still high about 20 km but the clouds had left so we went down to the beach. The people here are very friendly and seem to be always smiling&...

Saturday, April 24, 2010. Last day in Istanbul. Saturday, April 24. We arrived in Instanbul on the overnight bus at around 8 this am. I am again impressed and a little envious of the public transportation system here. We were unable to take the train because this project has again been put on hold. Apparently they have found more remains as they are putting the new train tunnel from the Asian to European side of Istanbul. The Constantine is at the tram atop and a great place to stay within walking and tr...

Travelling Around: March 2010

http://joread.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 31, 2010. Leaving Wadi Rum and heading for Petra. The sunrise was spectacular. And a ride back in one of the open jeeps. Then we proceeded onto Petra. The terrain changes completely the farther north we go and I can see here how the Bedouin could have survived and how some of them still do as they have for thousands of years with their goats and camels. It's much more green here and there is water for the animals and man. Aqaba citadel and Wadi Rum. And they had quite a good. Drove to th...

http://joread.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 2, 2010. The history of these buildings is that they were mostly small warehouses and not meant to be residences as they are now. The area appeared quite prosperous with numerous BMW's parked along side other high end new vehicles in front of these now homes as well as bicycles. There were also bicyle parking lots along the canal routes. Most people were either riding or walking. There was little automobile traffic narrow street ways. I got off at the end of the green trip and walked over the...

Friday, April 23, 2010. Pamukkale Calcium Tratetine and Heirapolis. All of the presentations were watched by persons of honor who were seated at the front of the imaginary stage and given a little table with glasses of water and tea. Following the school presentations we walked up the side of the mountain to the travetine pools and the ruins of Hierapolis which stood behind the falls. It was lovely at the top of rhe hill with the ruins and bright red poppies. And hold extensive chemical content. The time...
