June 14, 2011. This past Saturday morning, I found myself wide awake at 4am. Peering from a train. Weaving through rural China. Watching the sun rise. Except from the sunrise, the train ride itself Beijing to Xi’an was actually fairly uneventful. Granted, there were hoards of people in a small, dark space with bundles of luggage, groceries, electronic goods, and crops all yelling in language we could not understand- but that’s normal. All creatures of our God and King,. Lift up our voice and with us, sing.

May 31, 2011. So it’s Tuesday evening now in Beijing which means we’ve managed to survive three whole days in this crazy place. That is cause for celebration! The smell of trash. The smell of BO. The smell of meat in a market after it has been sitting out in the sun. The smell that arises when people ‘releave themselves’ in public spaces (ie. parks, flowerbeds, the piece of dirt next to the sidewalk). 8211; the subway system (what up 30 cent fares and easy access to all parts of the city! 8211; Giving up...

Development and Hot Pot. June 10, 2011. I have no idea. Some of the lectures are awesome, some are less so. But, what I’ve come witness in the last two weeks is the unique learning experience of learning abstractly about concepts for half the day, then experiencing those concepts first-hand as we explore the city the second half. On another note, here just a few pics from the last few days:. After gorging on hot pot, Jing took us to her go-to nail salon where we got our nails and toes done! And witness a...

May 29, 2011. Welp, I made it. It still amazing to me that one can board a plane in sunny Seattle on Friday afternoon and a mere ten hours later, one can travel half way around the world. Thank you Wright Brothers. 8221; playing in my head and waiting for Hannah to come to the hotel. How great it is to have her here! Making a fool out of yourself while alone is just embarrassing; Making a fool out of yourself with someone else is fun! Later, we had our welcoming banquet at the hotel in which Hannah and I...

May 27, 2011. So there you have it. But what happened this year is not why I am now writing. Rather, I’m relaunching this little blog in order to keep my loved ones connected throughout my next adventure… my adventure beginning tomorrow… my adventure to China! I’ll post tid-bits, musings, and perhaps some photos whenever I can for my anxious audience at home- namely, Laurie Gray and Margaret Lerfald.🙂. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Walls and White Rice. June 4, 2011. It is really surprising how all meat, cooked with veggies, and covered in sauce looks the same in grainy black and white photos. Seeing as we grew increasingly unconfident in our main dish selections, we decided that a bowl of white rice was necessary to insure at something on the table was edible. Please take a moment to think about how one would describe ‘white rice’ in charades. No pictures to guide. Not a single spoken word. It’s hard right? Anyway, ‘Tony’ is a gem...

June 6, 2011. 8220;It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” – J.R.R. Tolkien. I know, it sounds just lovely. Happy Dragon Boat Festival to you all! And now for the my absolutely favorite. Part of this adventure so far. One word: Pearls.
