It began in Africa: March 2012

It began in Africa. We've recently been to a couple of conferences that in some way (large or small) we helped bring to fruition. They were very different experiences. The first was a VSO conference that the volunteers designed, facilitated and 'workshopped'. Set in an 'almost' complete mid-range hotel in Nakuru, a small group of plucky volunteers where given two weeks to help organise this conference from scratch. As a guest speaker. You could think of it as a volunteer version of a TED Conference.

It began in Africa. We are two extremely spoiled volunteers. The umbrella-Christmas-tree was my brother Sam's idea and is frankly ingenious. For those who don't know him here is our very own unorthodox Santa Claus kicking back with his mate Vinnie on their recent visit (Sam is the one sans tache):. With the festive season bringing out our homesickness a little it's lucky we're going away for Christmas and New Year to Ethiopia. Why lucky? Because Ethiopia operates on the Ge-ez. It began in Africa. Anyone who has ever watched a David Attenborough documentary or taken even a passing interest in the natural world must have heard of the Maasai Mara and the Great Migration - the largest migration of land mammals anywhere in the world, where almost two million wildebeest move from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara in Kenya, and back again. We know his game! We were incredibly lucky and got to see a wildebeest river crossing. We stopped on top of a hill for lunch and a ...

It began in Africa. A few weeks ago I posted some pictures from some slums near where we live that had been burnt down. Yesterday, I went back to see how the rebuilding was getting along The rebuilding was complete, I could find just one place that hadn't been rebuilt, and life was back to normal. Other than the burnt tin walls, the only other evidence of the fire was the channel that had been dug to drain the water from putting out the fire which ended up having a lot of ash in it. It began in Africa. While I think Eddie would do pretty much anything at this point if it meant he got to see his beloved snow again, I am less easily persuaded to be mental, so I'm only going to climb this mo-fo if you lot sponsor us. Naturally the sponsorship money will go to our organisation, KAIH: if you need a reminder of what they're all about check out the website. And the case studies section. Links to this post. It began in Africa. Ninaendelea kusoma Kiswahili na ninajaribu kukariri. That I means 'I am going on studying Kiswahili and I try to practise.' Well, at least I think it does. I'm not a natural at languages (I can order beer, wine and coffee in a few European languages, and luckily it turns out that 'Bloody Mary' means the same thing wherever you go). So I have had to work quite hard to build my confidence with Kiwsahili. I'm having lessons every week with the lovely Lucy Otieno. Or 'how is your life?
