Can I Wear Stilettos in the Peace Corps?

Friday, March 12, 2010. I'm currently in Kigoma, Tanzania. I huffed, I puffed, and I climbed up the most beautiful mountains in search of chimpanzees. In short, we found man's closest relative, and damn, were they cute! I've been keeping notes and a full report is on its way. This trip, long awaited and well deserved, is just what the doctor ordered. I'm eager to get home, check on my chickens, rile up the batik group, and play some netball with my 7th graders. Friday, January 29, 2010. Nothing else to r...

http://kateinthewild.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, March 26, 2009. March Showers Bring.April Showers? I'm back. I was never really far away, just have lost the motivation absolutely critical to a fulfilling post. I'll try my best today, but will be cheating a little. You'll see how soon. Will I ever learn to negotiate the strange folds of time or will she continue to manipulate me? My villagers help me understand far more than I've been able to teach them. But somehow, I think I'm going to manage. Some recent events of notice:. About 3 days afte...

You can want and want and want all you want. So I give you a dollar today. That will buy you alcohol and french fries but tomorrow comes and you have no ability to procur anything for yourself. soccer balls and conference calls: On Becoming A Hobo and The Great Depression

http://soccerballsandconferencecalls.blogspot.com/2008/12/on-becoming-hobo-and-great-depression.html

Soccer balls and conference calls. Keeping the Ball Rolling With Kids and Work. Saturday, December 20, 2008. On Becoming A Hobo and The Great Depression. Happy Holidays to all, I am late in these wishes to everyone, but I guess better late than never. I have felt less than inspired to write anything once again. Excuse of the month: Holiday hub bub, lists that don’t end. It’s not that I’m so totally slammed with stuff to do, just little things here and there that stress me out. 8220;No the Great Depressio...

Soccer balls and conference calls. Keeping the Ball Rolling With Kids and Work. Tuesday, November 25, 2008. I am thankful for.lots of things, especially this year. Mostly for the fact that Cole is such a sweet, dear person. He had to write what he was especially thankful for. He wrote, ". I am especially thankful that my Bubbie is feeling better from her car accident. Bubbie is my mom) I was overwhelmed with pride, amazement and sadness that he thought enough about her ordeal to put it on paper. When the...

Hi I'm going to begin with my usual apology for not blogging regularly. So here it is. I. Am. Sorry. That's it. That's all I'm gonna do. I would have become a menace to society for sure. Not be so nice to EVERYONE! Make more of an effort to be a better "homemaker". I know you're snickering at the 1950's Leave It To Beaver image and the prospect of me with an apron on, ...

Soccer balls and conference calls. Keeping the Ball Rolling With Kids and Work. Sunday, June 29, 2008. Last night, we had our sitter YEE HAW! Our ticket to freedom for just a few hours. She arrived about 5 pm and we went to a great dinner, and of course, the restaurant was practically empty because, really, who eats this early except senior citizens having the early bird special. So, after a quick dinner, we ponder,. What are we going to do now. This double murder happened on June 12, 1994. At that t...

Be it how it will, do right now. The highlight of my Peace Corps service arrived the 23. Of last month, when my counterpart and I took all 26 young men from Siyakhula Boys Club to Johannesburg on an educational field trip for the end of term break. They raised roughly half the cost of transport themselves, the club paid for some of the remaining cost, and overly generous donations from a precious few friends and family in America provided the rest. Thank you! So, what happened? It was filed under Serving.

Kate In The Middle

The shoe conundrum: Why one pair is never enough. October 29, 2009. Yesterday, I made a startling discovery. My boss was hiding 16 pairs of shoes under her desk. I had no idea until I walked into her office and saw a Nordstrom’s shopping bag over flowing with flats, pumps, open-toed, and t-straps. What’s up with the shoes? I asked. Are you donating them? Oh god, no, she said as she held up a sleek pair of black patent leather Kate Spade flats. I was just trying to get some order in my office. Flip flops ...

kateintheworld | finding my feet as a new single – my icon isn't me, it's Dorothy because I feel like her

Get me outta here! Finding my feet as a new single – my icon isn't me, it's Dorothy because I feel like her. Upon the horns of an existential crisis. February 17, 2013. I ask myself sometimes if the inadvertent freedom my ex-husband afforded me by leaving has now been compromised by some deep need for the mundane and routine. Despite our not being a conventional man-woman couple I wonder, are we at risk of becoming tediously everyday? Perhaps I am expecting too much. After all, neither Audrey nor I a...

Living in the UAE

Living in the UAE. Saturday, August 2, 2014. Jam made with Turkish Figs. I have been interested in figs for years (see previous post on fig jam from Lebanese figs), in their botany, in their geographic range - I see them everywhere, and in the diversity of the fruit. I was in southwestern Turkey at the end of July and discovered that Turkey is definitely a good place to go when it comes to figs. I decided to make a small batch of jam from them and bought a kilo at the market. Notes on the measurements.

Kate in Uganda

Wednesday, April 18, 2007. Sooo sorry that I haven’t posted anything in ages. It got a little busy around here, especially now because of finals and stuff. The weekend after our safari, we had quite the adventure. We went white water rafting down the. We conquered class 4 and 5 rapids, which. Doesn’t even have anywhere. We were in large rafting boats with about 10 people in each raft. Each raft had a rafting guide, all of who were SO fun. We hit about 6 sets of rapids, 3 in the morning, 3 in the afternoon.
