Life as I know it as a grad student in Minnesota. (though I'm sorta in Scotland in this picture). Friday, January 28, 2011. A healthy dose of embarassment. Today I face-planted it on the main stairwell in front of the entire high school. Perhaps this is just another way life is telling me to slow down? Hmm no. Too obvious. I think this is just clumsiness. Walking (carefully) down the hall a bit later to make some copies, I pass a teacher and without even thinking stupidly blurt out, "Hola! I puff out the...
the present tense: Segovia, Spain

Life as I know it as a grad student in Minnesota. (though I'm sorta in Scotland in this picture). Tuesday, July 12, 2011. The Alcázar of Segovia. Look at all that nothing in the background! I'm a die-hard Tudor junkie, but that's not to say I don't enjoy some good medieval Spanish palaces and history, too. I just love 'em. So grand and mysterious and full of stories, so different from today and so beautiful. Well, the whole city of Segovia is a like a fairytale city in the middle of a sandbox, truthfully.

Life as I know it as a grad student in Minnesota. (though I'm sorta in Scotland in this picture). Friday, February 4, 2011. Perhaps it's a sign I should give it a break when two pens run out of ink in the same day. My life is so many words this year. French words, blog words, journal words, Spanish words, letter words, sticky note words, list words, song words, English words. I had no idea I had such a huge crush on words. Who knew I had so much to say? If desks could talk. She was wearing a bright orang...

Life as I know it as a grad student in Minnesota. (though I'm sorta in Scotland in this picture). Wednesday, March 16, 2011. Nancy tastes so good. I can't wait to remember this. I'm surrounded by all sorts of dead, stuffed things. Ducks, what appears to be a wolverine, some other birds, and more. Everything is in shades of brown and all is cast in a soft, golden light coming from an assortment of lights and lamps that look to have all at one point belonged in a log cabin. I feel so at home. Just a blurry...

Life as I know it as a grad student in Minnesota. (though I'm sorta in Scotland in this picture). Wednesday, April 29, 2009. 8 A day in a village. There’s a baby strapped to my back. I just got done carrying a bucket of water on my head from the well back to the hut. The skin on my right hand is still peeling a bit from when I rubbed it raw pounding millet. And now I’m sitting on a mat under a mango tree sharing ataaya. The first thing I did after saying nanga def. When we sat down and had ataaya. I was ...

Sarah in Senegal: August 2009
http://sarahdo.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 1, 2009. So My Senegal experience has in fact been useful now that I'm home. And to all those people who used to say, "Why would you take French? You'll never use it. Spanish. Is useful": I'm using my French. In America. Through some miraculous chain of events (e-mails), I found out about the Freedom House. It is a temporary residence for refugees while they are applying for political asylum in the U.S. And where are these refugees from? And this (playing outside with my "baby" cousin).

March 26, 2009. That was a really nice day. I read, I napped, I swam, I got a safe, protected tan in some places and angry red sunburns in others, and had a general good time. Wait, brainwave. It depends on what kind of customs form you put on the package. If it’s the little green one, it goes to Fann. If it’s the big white one, it goes to Colis Postaux. Perhaps there world is a logical place after all. Nothing bad happened, and as it turned out, my host mom, Anita, and Moussouba all voted! 8221; with bi...

April 7, 2009. Photos from my spring break. Last week, during my spring break, I traveled to the southern region of Senegal, called Casamance. It’s known for its lush, green landscape, gorgeous sandy beaches, and the Diola people who live there who have carefully guarded many of their traditional cultural practices. Also, the violent separatist movement. Would operate much the same way as other modes of transportation in Senegal – stuff as many people in as possible. It would get dangerously ov...In 2002...

March 20, 2009. Hello all. I finally got my pictures from my weekend in Saint-Louis to upload. They're not great because most of them were taken from a moving horse cart or pirogue, but some of them are kind of nice. I'm looking forward to it, and I'm definitly glad that I'll have the chance go to back to Saint-Louis! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Sarah in Senegal: September 2009

Monday, September 28, 2009. At long last, my Top Ten list of things I miss about Dakar, a.k.a. the most ridiculous things. 10 “Hamburger complète”: a burger with ketchup, mayo, fries, and a fried egg on it. Possibly some other things I don’t even remember anymore…. 9 Houses that don’t actually close to the outside: what happens during the rainy season? 7 Marché Sandaga: best place to shop EVER. It makes me hate malls even more! 8221; or “nanga def? 8221; or “will you marry me? 4 MyShop: It’s a gas ...
Sarah in Senegal: 100% Animist
http://sarahdo.blogspot.com/2009/05/100-animist.html
Monday, May 18, 2009. I realize that it has been an absurdly long time since my last blot post. Don’t worry: I’m still alive! It’s just life as usual in Dakar, but with building frustration with this place. I hate to complain, but this is just ridiculous. Problem Number 1: Casamance. She is off work for 2-3 weeks. But enough complaining. Good thing it’s 2 weeks until I go home; there’s nothing like a nagging fake mother to appreciate your real one, who treats you like an independent adult.

April 22, 2009. To start off with, here’s a brief history lesson about how Islam actually got to Senegal:. That’s how 95% of the Senegalese population came to be Muslim. The small percentage of Christians in Senegal are, for the most part, grouped in cities on the Atlantic coast that used to be important colonial cites (Dakar, Rufisque, St. Louis, etc). Even in these places, Muslims overwhelmingly outnumber Christians. 8221; (“Why not Kara? April 14, 2009. Pictures from Easter and my birthday. I went wit...

Life as I know it as a grad student in Minnesota. (though I'm sorta in Scotland in this picture). Thursday, December 8, 2011. My fingertips are raw and there is chalk caked in the cracks around my fingernails. My adrenaline rush has made the skin on my arms stretch so tight it feels it'll tear open, but I shove the unpleasant image aside and continue climbing my way up on the ‘yellow brick road’, which is what they call this particular route on the rock wall here. Bouldering= climbing left to right,.
