Sarah in Senegal: May 2009

http://sarahdo.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, May 28, 2009. I leave Dakar in two days. What are the things I want to do most before leaving? 1 Go to "posh bakery". Seriously, the thing I want to do most in Dakar is drink cappuccino and pretend I'm not in Senegal? Other last things that were completely necessary: trampolining on the beach, of course! Monday, May 18, 2009. I realize that it has been an absurdly long time since my last blot post. Don’t worry: I’m still alive! Problem Number 1: Casamance. She is off work for 2-3 weeks. But eno...

Sarah in Senegal: September 2009

Monday, September 28, 2009. At long last, my Top Ten list of things I miss about Dakar, a.k.a. the most ridiculous things. 10 “Hamburger complète”: a burger with ketchup, mayo, fries, and a fried egg on it. Possibly some other things I don’t even remember anymore…. 9 Houses that don’t actually close to the outside: what happens during the rainy season? 7 Marché Sandaga: best place to shop EVER. It makes me hate malls even more! 8221; or “nanga def? 8221; or “will you marry me? 4 MyShop: It’s a gas ...

Sarah in Senegal: January 2009

http://sarahdo.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 27, 2009. Wolof word of the day:. Doff = crazy. It’s probably the Wolof word I hear most often around my house. Another one of the new things I am experiencing here is housework! My host mom is really insistent that Meera and I keep our room spotless, but the best part is that once a week, we get to wash our own laundry, by hand! Monday, January 12, 2009. Look at the toubabs! Wolof word of the day:. Friday, January 9, 2009. Week one: découvrir Dakar. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

http://krooke.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

March 26, 2009. That was a really nice day. I read, I napped, I swam, I got a safe, protected tan in some places and angry red sunburns in others, and had a general good time. Wait, brainwave. It depends on what kind of customs form you put on the package. If it’s the little green one, it goes to Fann. If it’s the big white one, it goes to Colis Postaux. Perhaps there world is a logical place after all. Nothing bad happened, and as it turned out, my host mom, Anita, and Moussouba all voted! 8221; with bi...

Postcards: Spring Break

http://krooke.blogspot.com/2009/04/spring-break.html

April 7, 2009. Photos from my spring break. Last week, during my spring break, I traveled to the southern region of Senegal, called Casamance. It’s known for its lush, green landscape, gorgeous sandy beaches, and the Diola people who live there who have carefully guarded many of their traditional cultural practices. Also, the violent separatist movement. Would operate much the same way as other modes of transportation in Senegal – stuff as many people in as possible. It would get dangerously ov...In 2002...

March 20, 2009. Hello all. I finally got my pictures from my weekend in Saint-Louis to upload. http://krooke.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

April 22, 2009. To start off with, here’s a brief history lesson about how Islam actually got to Senegal:. That’s how 95% of the Senegalese population came to be Muslim. The small percentage of Christians in Senegal are, for the most part, grouped in cities on the Atlantic coast that used to be important colonial cites (Dakar, Rufisque, St. Louis, etc). Even in these places, Muslims overwhelmingly outnumber Christians. 8221; (“Why not Kara? April 14, 2009. Pictures from Easter and my birthday. I went wit...

http://krooke.blogspot.com/2009/03/meet-me-in-saint-louis.html

March 17, 2009. Meet me in Saint-Louis. We left on Friday (which meant no class, yay) and drove all morning through barren Sahel landscape. Things we saw on the way that totally mystified me include:. People. Every now and then you’d look out and see people walking through the bush even though there was no sign of a settlement anywhere. What could they possibly be doing out there? How did they get food? What did they do all day? How could life possibly work here? The tour was a nice, leisurely river crui...

In this experiment we inserted plasmid DNA into non-disease-causing E. coli bacteria, making them glow and antibiotic resistant. We did this to observe the connections between DNA to RNA to protein to a trait. We used GFP as a biological tracer to see if we had transformed the. Cells to accept the pGLO plasmid DNA. Our results:. PGLO LB: grew fully to cover entire dish, did not glow. PGLO LB/amp: grew well, did not glow.

Secrets, suprises, and not-so-sensational stories. Sunday, February 12, 2012. A blanket for Grandma. I have spent about a year making a warm crocheted blanket for my grandmother and around two weeks ago, that work finally paid off. A sleepover with Ethan. I have just recently moved to our basement, and wanted to share it with someone. so I phoned up Ethan and poof! We had a sleep over! What made it even more special, is that my mom let Ethan stay over for a second night! Snuggled up in my BEDroom.
