Butlers Beer and Bikes. Kevin Butler - Perpetual Category 4 bike racer, traveler, sometimes writer, and lover of beer. Thursday, August 13, 2009. The field got the bell and Stephen was in the drivers seat looking like a repeat of his Top 10 at Sherman Park. Then, it all went pear-shaped. As I could watch the backstretch I watched in pain as Stephen started going backwards, blowing up spectacularly with half a lap to go! Sweet With Derek racing 3's, WFR/Bicycles Etc. was up to 5 guys! Pinchy's Heavenly Adventures: Leland Kermesse, Leland, IL, April 21, 2012
http://stephenjbutler.blogspot.com/2012/04/leland-kermesse-leland-il-april-21-2012.html
Saturday, April 28, 2012. Leland Kermesse, Leland, IL, April 21, 2012. Today was the day that all area bike racers both look forward to and fear at the same time.the Leland Kermesse. A 15-mile circuit in the middle of the still-barren cornfields with five miles of gravel and barely a tree to block the wind. So it was with a great deal of determination that I swore to finish it this year. The weather was actually quite nice.mostly sunny skies, and manageable wind. Early in the morning.

Sunday, March 18, 2012. Kenosha Velosport Spring Training Criterium #1, Pleasant Prairie, WI, March 11, 2012. At long last the offseason was over and it was time to start turning the pedals in anger. First up, as usual, was the 1st weekend of the Kenosha Velosport training criteriums in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. The first of many, to be sure. My plan was to sit in and do absolutely no work. I wanted to shake out the legs from my efforts in the last race, and conserve as much energy as possible for...

Monday, August 16, 2010. Glencoe Grand Prix, Glencoe, IL, August 14, 2010. What should have been the height of my season was instead a short and disappointing day in the saddle. I said "I'll try," stepped on the gas, and grabbed onto that wheel. The hill was not as steep as the hill at Downers, but was a bit longer and did not have the benefit of being followed by a long descent. I knew from the first time up it that it was going to be problematic. Hills and I don't get along. What a horrendous day. ...

http://stephenjbutler.blogspot.com/2011/09/fall-fling-pella-criterium-west-chicago.html
Saturday, September 24, 2011. ABD Fall Fling Pella Criterium, West Chicago, IL, September 24, 2011. Today was my 15th time racing at “The Pelladrome” during the 2011 season. Every Wednesday night From May through September, ABD puts on training criteriums at this flat, 0.80-mile, near-oval stretch of pavement next to the Pella Windows factory in West Chicago. I was able to make it out to those races 14 times this summer, and today it was “for real.”. I had an added incentive to avoid embarrassing myself ...

Wednesday, August 17, 2011. Winfield ABR Championship Criterium, Winfield, IL, August 14, 2011. With yesterday’s DNF embarrassment still painful in my mind, I drove back over to Winfield for the second race of the weekend. I was worried about how today’s hill would feel after my weakness on yesterday’s incline. However, the hill on this course is quite different. As we came across the line with 2 laps to go, I was at the very front of the field and still feeling pretty relaxed. Kev shouted his encour...

Pinchy's Heavenly Adventures: Time to race!
http://stephenjbutler.blogspot.com/2012/03/time-to-race.html
Sunday, March 11, 2012. Hard to believe, but here it is.March 11, 2012, and the 1st weekend of the 3-week ABR Spring Training Criteriums in Pleasant Prairie, WI, sponsored by Kenosha Velosport. The weather for these early-season races is always unpredictable, but the forecast for race time today is mid-50s with moderate (11-12 mph) winds. So, what are my goals for 2012? Bicycle Heaven already has a great 3 squad, and several 4s are on the verge of movin' on up. I'd love to be a part of that group.

Thursday, March 22, 2012. Kenosha Velosport Spring Training Criterium #2, Pleasant Prairie, WI, March 18, 2012. Well, today felt like a step back. We lucked out yet again with another unseasonably beautiful day for mid-March. Temps were in the low 70s with plenty of sunshine. Plenty of wind to go along with it, too, but I suppose that is a given. After a nice between-race warmup, teammate David Ross and I rolled to the line to find ourselves in a 10-man field. I am not kidding. I don't get it. After anot...
Pinchy's Heavenly Adventures: June 2011
http://stephenjbutler.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, June 21, 2011. Cobb Park Criterium, Kankakee, IL, June 18, 2011. After the debacle at last week’s criterium in Galena, I sought to do a little penance at Cobb Park. I had only pre-registered for the 12:00 Masters 30 4/5 race, but then I received an email the night before that the 11:10 Women’s 3 race was being replaced by an open Cat 4/5 race. So, I decided to double up and do one race right after the other. When the sprint came at the end, I gave it my all and ended up finishing 14th. I didn...

Butlers Beer and Bikes. Kevin Butler - Perpetual Category 4 bike racer, traveler, sometimes writer, and lover of beer. Thursday, April 21, 2011. It was cold and damp when we began and I was very appreciative that I was not a 1/2/3 on Saturday as the day just got worse. We had a good sized field - 40ish? I exited the 2nd sector after being passed by the Cat 5 leaders who were battling for a frameset, tapped the brakes to clear the crud from the rims and powered with a bit of tailwind. Hitting the 3rd ...

So got on the plane to Osaka, which was only a matter of convenience since it’s the closest airport to what was our true goal. Kyoto! Well we had booke...
