Sunday, August 8, 2010. Moving Day on the Internet! I think I mentioned when I brought this blog back to life that I had been having second thoughts about using the blogger format. After much deliberation (or maybe a snap decision while I was walking! One of the two! Check it out: http:/ elruhl.tumblr.com/. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Greetings from THE FUTURE. Friday, June 19, 2009. Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Only this time we were more prepared and shut the windows really quick and the power was only out for about 10 minutes. At least after the storms the temperature drops nicely. I don't know why, but it seems like everyone can say no to more food but me. When Indian women periodically go around the circle of people eating and try to force more food onto everyone's plates, I feel like I put up a pretty good fight. I say "No! I'll eat more later! It gets perso...

Greetings from THE FUTURE: Oh My Goodness, German Words!
http://elizabeth-inthefuture.blogspot.com/2010/08/oh-my-goodness-german-words.html
Tuesday, August 3, 2010. Oh My Goodness, German Words! Today the group spent some time registering with the state and applying for visas, and later on I purchased and activated my very own German Handy. Going through these processes demonstrated two key parts of German culture: first, the Germans' love for paperwork, and their dedication to using much longer words than any poor mortal could ever pronounce. Instead I was left staring at terms like "einzelverbindungsnachweis" (itemized bill, or course!

Greetings from THE FUTURE: Sort of Settled
http://elizabeth-inthefuture.blogspot.com/2010/08/sort-of-settled.html
Monday, August 2, 2010. I tried halfheartedly to sprinkle the welcome-dinner conversation with little German phrases and simple sentences, but mostly the daughter and her boyfriend kept things going in English. Starting tomorrow, only German! Even if we only talk about hobbies and going to the park! Tomorrow's Adventure: Handy Einkaufen! August 3, 2010 at 6:26 PM. Im so inspired to restart my blog too, although God knows what adventures are possible in Cleveland. No blocks of lard! Lard is good for every...

Monday, July 20, 2009. Traveling is So Many New Kinds of Uncomfortable! And Some Old Kinds. Plus we got eaten alive all through dinner, making all the Jodhpur interns who had discontinued their malaria medicine (including me) a little nervous. We enjoyed a little taste of Austria for breakfast at Cafe Edelweiss (Muesli and drip coffee! And Date and Walnut Pie! Even though I complain about being force fed and not knowing what's up with my food situation, I love the care and effort my host mother puts into...

Wednesday, August 20, 2008. From there we were bused to various mining attractions where we shuffled around, rubbing our eyes and trying not to drool too visibly. We went to a museum with replicas of old tyme buildings, like a typical miner's house, a bank, and a police station. To the right is me, experimenting with being a miner's wife. To the right is a traditional mining bathroom (bucket with threadbare curtain). Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Greetings from THE FUTURE. View my complete profile.

Thursday, July 16, 2009. Apparently Curd is More Important in India. We met a nice guy named Naryan ("nice guy" is ominous sounding, but he turned out to be okay) at a Hanuman temple and we arranged for him to take us on a forest trek early Sunday morning. He led us to some gorgeous look out points and past a few cave dwellings where wandering Saddhus (holy men) can camp out and live off the forest. You are in India! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Greetings from THE FUTURE: Bad Coffee and Worse Handwriting
http://elizabeth-inthefuture.blogspot.com/2010/08/bad-coffee-and-worse-handwriting.html
Thursday, August 5, 2010. Bad Coffee and Worse Handwriting. So I drink my morning swill with gusto! I woke up early today to head to the German version of the DMV to anmelden, or register. I guess every time a foreigner or a German changes addresses they need to go into a specific government office and register their new address. You take a number, fill out a form, answer some questions, the Beamtin enters some stuff in a computer, no big deal, right? Maybe we will all be speaking Swahili! View my comple...
