Laurrie's Garden Diary : I See Improvements
https://laurriesgardendiary.blogspot.com/2015/07/i-see-improvements.html
Thursday, July 16, 2015. Today was a lovely day - dry and sunny and cool. Perfection. I was pleased on my tour of the garden this morning to see some improvements in plants that had disappointed me in the past. Like the 'Bluebird' hydrangea serrata that has never bloomed well. In past years the buds were either frost nipped or deer nibbled, reducing the flowers to one or two hidden deep inside the shrub. What did bloom was pinkish purpley. This year I am seeing pretty lace caps of clear blue. Crocosmia '...

Laurrie's Garden Diary : DESIGN IDEAS
https://laurriesgardendiary.blogspot.com/p/testing.html
Note to self: I started this collection of idea photos before Pinterest. Now, with the ease of pinning ideas there, I should discontinue this page. Pinterest is easier to use and automatically attributes sources (which I neglected to do here, thinking I'd keep this journal private). Steppers up hill around Dogwood to Front Walk. Set flat stones into the grass on the slope around dogwood in front. leading from driveway up to front walk. This is where they would go, curving around the tree and up the slope:.

Laurrie's Garden Diary : A Proper Wall
https://laurriesgardendiary.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-proper-wall.html
Monday, July 20, 2015. Hot and humid. We've had some cool days and some chilly nights, but more typical July weather has finally arrived I think. The stonemason who put in our bluestone steppers in the grass around the Blueberry Garden came back last week and built me a wall. But it never looked finished or even intentional. The plantings bled into the lawn along a raggy edge. All the other foundation plantings around the house are bounded by walkways or the patio, so there's a finished edge to w...This ...

Laurrie's Garden Diary : Scents and Sounds
https://laurriesgardendiary.blogspot.com/2015/08/scents-and-sounds.html
Wednesday, August 12, 2015. It rained deeply yesterday, an inch and a quarter, and then it rained some more at night, another half inch, and then at 3 in the morning the sprinklers went on and I had to get up in hurry and turn them off. We've had plenty of water. Today is sunny and sparkly. I make frequent excuses to go out the front door on some errand or other in order to catch a whiff of the rose's very subtle sweet scent. Although I don't actually do anything with the compost. I end up sitting in...

Laurrie's Garden Diary : TO DO
https://laurriesgardendiary.blogspot.com/p/home-page.html
TASKS I MUST DO - the big ones. Expand areas under birch trees. Expand Dry creek bed at top end. Dig out and remove weather station pole (put NCCD sassafras there). After it flowers, cut 'Ogon' spirea to ground to rejuvenate. Cut amsonias back by half in June. PLANTS I MIGHT MOVE. Blueberries in field - struggling there. Put all 6 on back of berm? Move Edward Goucher abelia? Too crowded in Birch Garden. Move to top of stone wall where little St. Johnswort is struggling? PLANTS FOR NEXT YEAR.

Laurrie's Garden Diary : PRUNING
https://laurriesgardendiary.blogspot.com/p/pruning.html
Article from Nan Ondra on Cut-Back Shrubs (coppicing). When pruning a cut back shrub like Cotinus smokebush, or Lupulus golden hops vine, root prune it as well in early spring. Otherwise, the roots get very large and store enough energy to fuel too much growth as it leafs out and it gets too big even in one season. First, coppice to 2 foot frame Then when this size, cut back new stems by 1/3. Note that when cutting back, cut willows. All the way to the ground, don't leave even a few inches. Here's an eve...
