Plant Inventory: Cul de Sac
http://laurrie-s.blogspot.com/p/cul-de-sac.html
ALL THE PLANTS IN MY GARDEN. This is not my garden, it's the cul de sac at the end of our road, planted and maintained by our homeowner's association. But since our house sits at the top of this circle, it is what I see out my front door and every time I drive down the driveway. Here is how it started, when construction was new and nine houses were just going in on our short street. Looking from our own driveway down the street, before the cul de sac had any plantings at all. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Plant Inventory: Patio Wall
http://laurrie-s.blogspot.com/p/patio.html
ALL THE PLANTS IN MY GARDEN. A low wall surrounds a small stone patio off a raised wooden deck. Initially I planted a big swath of black eyed susans and daisies around the wall, but the look was way too overwhelming. In 2010 I removed all but a couple stands of black eyed susans and planted a mix of perennials. A Japanese maple ('Bloodgood') anchors the corner on the left. May 1, 2007. August 17, 2008. May 13, 2009. August 7, 2009. August 26, 2010. August 17, 2011. August 9, 2012. August 27, 2012. I like...

Plant Inventory: Dry Creekbed
http://laurrie-s.blogspot.com/p/dry-creekbed.html
ALL THE PLANTS IN MY GARDEN. I built a dry creek bed out of rocks dug from the property. It is decorative, it does not carry any water. I do wish I had dug it deeper originally; as I tinkered with the shape and placement of rocks, I lost any swale or depth and it is very shallow now. I'd still like to plant more around the edges to make it more naturalistic looking. August 11, 2010. July 18, 2011. March 20, 2012 we added a small bridge. May 6, 2012 Orange geums and blue forget-me-nots bloom at the edges.

Plant Inventory: Gravel Garden
http://laurrie-s.blogspot.com/p/gravel-garden.html
ALL THE PLANTS IN MY GARDEN. This seating area sits at the top of the driveway, to the west side of the house. It is somewhat enclosed by dense green inkberry hollies on one side and the bluestone walkway with plantings on the house side. It's a sunny area in the afternoon, and the challenge has been to get some shade there either from the umbrella or from trees planted along the west side. In 2015 I painted two Mayan chairs red, and like that effect a lot. August 7, 2009. May 12, 2011 Before. September ...

Plant Inventory: Stone Walls
http://laurrie-s.blogspot.com/p/stone-wall.html
ALL THE PLANTS IN MY GARDEN. In late summer 2013, we removed the struggling thyme on the berm at the top of the driveway, and put in a dry stacked stone wall. We ordered a pallet of irregular wallstone (fieldstone) and crushed gravel and set to work. It was harder than anticipated, and the result is amateurish, but it looks ok. One stone was heart shaped and that was featured in the wall. Here is the completed wall on September 6, 2013. Love the stone heart. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Abies / Korean Fir.

Plant Inventory: Drive By
http://laurrie-s.blogspot.com/p/drive-by.html
ALL THE PLANTS IN MY GARDEN. This is the garden that we drive by as we come up to the garage. It's evolving, but in autumn 2014 it looked awesome. While its best season is fall, in May there is a line of globe alliums that march up the middle, with their declining foliage well hidden by the emerging 'Gro-Low' sumacs, seen here in 2015:. Here is the history of the development of this garden:. October 5, 2011, isolated plantings before we connected it all, parallel to the curve of the drive. August 2, 2012.

Plant Inventory: Spruce Berm
http://laurrie-s.blogspot.com/p/spruce-berm.html
ALL THE PLANTS IN MY GARDEN. Our back yard desperately needed screening from a road that ran along a ridge behind our property. In 2005 we had a landscaper put in a raised berm with 5 large spruces and 4 tiny hollies. March 28, 2006. May 14, 2007. In 2008 I planted several yellowroot plants ( Xanthorrhiza simplicissima. Along the front edge (the round green blobs in the shot below). Over the years they filled in beautifully. August 17. 2008. August 7, 2009. October 30, 2010. February 21, 2011. In Decembe...

Plant Inventory: Northern Exposure
http://laurrie-s.blogspot.com/p/northern-exposure.html
ALL THE PLANTS IN MY GARDEN. August 20, 2010. This garden is a strip between the walk, where it curves around to the backyard, and the north wall of the house. In spring and in fall it is in shade from the house all day, but in summer the sun comes in from either side and the garden is in full sun most of the day. And as of late 2015 I edited down the sweetbay magnolia, lopping off an awkward major branch, and leaving a tall skinny trunk. Here is the history of the development of this garden:. August 2, ...

sweetbay: October 2014
http://sweetbay103.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Wednesday, October 22, 2014. One of the first signs of fall here is when the wild persimmons trees turn. purple. Laurrie, of the blog "My Weeds are Very Sorry" has a wild persimmon of the same species that turns a bright golden orange. Almost like a pumpkin. Very seasonal. Who wouldn't love a tree that turns that color? Although she doesn't post on that blog anymore, she still has an online gardening journal. That I read regularly.). From July: Rosepink (Sabatia angularis), an annual that blooms in midsu...

Plant Inventory: Back Hill
http://laurrie-s.blogspot.com/p/back-hill.html
ALL THE PLANTS IN MY GARDEN. Our lot was cleared in 2003 and our house was built in 2004. After the bulldozers left, the back hill was a bare patch, waiting to fill up with invasive bittersweet, multiflora rose, poison ivy and autumn olive. Later Japanese barberry started growing everywhere too. March 28, 2006. June 14, 2006. I replaced the white plastic tubes with green plastic mesh tubes. A little easier to look at. May 13, 2007. In only a few years the saplings were getting taller. August 7, 2009.
