My Weeds Are Very Sorry: May 2013
http://laurries.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
May 29, 2013. She steals the show in May. Consistently a scene grabber. Never an off year. It doesn't matter if we have a dry spring, cool start to the season, horrible storms, or too much sun. She blooms like clockwork and in perfect symmetry. And for a long time, weeks and weeks. She is never bothered by pests or any kind of leaf problem. Her confidence radiates, and no hungry bug or errant spore would dare approach. Hey guys, over here, in the distance. Scene stealer. May 25, 2013. Or heather, and so ...
My Weeds Are Very Sorry: September 2013
http://laurries.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
September 29, 2013. I am still getting strawberries in late September. Nothing like the prolific crop that was producing in June and July, but I get a bowl like this every few days now and they still taste summer sweet. These are everbearing 'Mara des Bois' strawberries, but I never thought everbearing meant they would be giving me such juicy big fruits in late September. They are starting to make me think of Christmas ornaments. These hardy begonias (Begonia grandis) are from a plant that Lee May. Anoth...
My Weeds Are Very Sorry: Towering Nuisance
http://laurries.blogspot.com/2014/01/towering-nuisance.html
January 18, 2014. Eastern Cottonwood trees (Populus deltoides) grow all around us in areas that were disturbed by the builders. They are fast growing, messy, weak wooded trees that do not live very long, but they grow to a huge size in a short time. Then they die, and start showering branches and debris all over. In June the female trees blow white cotton fluff all over the neighborhood where it accumulates just like snow in corners of the patio and around plants in the garden. I regret that now. As skin...
My Weeds Are Very Sorry: Bury My Heart
http://laurries.blogspot.com/2014/01/bury-my-heart.html
January 6, 2014. The winter weather has been wild in the upper US, with severe cold one day, and warm, wet fog the next. We haven't had as sharply bitter temperatures as further north, but I did wake up to minus 7 F (-21 C) degrees the other morning and it was cold. In those temperatures the snow crunches and groans loudly when you walk or drive on it. It's that loud, complaining sound that only very frigid snow makes underfoot. It looks so white and so creamy and so artfully dolloped on everything.
My Weeds Are Very Sorry: March 2010
http://laurries.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
March 30, 2010. What my Okame Cherry wants to be. Almost Wordless, Almost Wednesday (a day early). The earliest bloomer of all the flowering cherries, Prunus 'Okame': mine in late March 2010, and what mine wants to be, in March of 2020 . Photo from Gardeners' World.com. And will be. Some day. March 28, 2010. Of 10 approved tenets of renegade gardening, so there. Nevertheless, the neighbor's tree came down. The men did not chop it down, but rather dis-assambled it in the reverse order that it had grow...

Plant Inventory: Cul de Sac
http://laurrie-s.blogspot.com/p/cul-de-sac.html
ALL THE PLANTS IN MY GARDEN. This is not my garden, it's the cul de sac at the end of our road, planted and maintained by our homeowner's association. But since our house sits at the top of this circle, it is what I see out my front door and every time I drive down the driveway. Here is how it started, when construction was new and nine houses were just going in on our short street. Looking from our own driveway down the street, before the cul de sac had any plantings at all. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
Plant Inventory: Patio Wall
http://laurrie-s.blogspot.com/p/patio.html
ALL THE PLANTS IN MY GARDEN. A low wall surrounds a small stone patio off a raised wooden deck. Initially I planted a big swath of black eyed susans and daisies around the wall, but the look was way too overwhelming. In 2010 I removed all but a couple stands of black eyed susans and planted a mix of perennials. A Japanese maple ('Bloodgood') anchors the corner on the left. May 1, 2007. August 17, 2008. Just a girl with a hammer: August 2014
http://www.justagirlwithahammer.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
My Mighty Life List. Friday, August 15, 2014. Garden bloggers' bloom day, August 2014. I have friends, friends who don't garden, who ask me, "What's new? What have you been up to? The kids from three doors down wander by and I mutter, "Look at how the bumbles keep to the agastache while the honeybees feed on the sedum. And I don't even know what these tiny guys are on the tithonia." They no longer like talking to me because they are teenagers now and also, I'm rambling about bees. Two years ago and it pr...
Just a girl with a hammer: Why I love Yard Rents and craigslist
http://www.justagirlwithahammer.com/2012/04/why-i-love-yardrents-and-craigslist.html
My Mighty Life List. Monday, April 9, 2012. Why I love Yard Rents and craigslist. It was sunny this weekend! I'm so full of love and Vitamin D right now. I had been holding off on reserving a sod cutter for the weekend to see if the weather was actually going to be dry, so I got the 2-4pm delivery spot from Yard Rents. So with just 45 minutes (and a sprinkling of mulch) we went from this:. And I got two responses. By the next afternoon all of these were gone. We went to brunch and came back to an...I bor...

The many life lessons. Unearthed when we dig. In the dirt . . . and pursue. A range of other interests. In the constantly evolving. Monday, October 20, 2014. Shadow, light, color; OK, so let's roll. That stark angle contradicted the tropical blooms of the begonia that had been outside all spring and summer, forever young, forever vibrant. As Lyn and I had been so many years and places ago. We've begun. Too, we've begun to understand first-hand the extent to which cancer has affected the lives of so m...
Lee May's Gardening Life: Dancing on the Ceiling
http://www.leemaysgardeninglife.com/2014/11/one-morning-between-my-first-and-second.html
The many life lessons. Unearthed when we dig. In the dirt . . . and pursue. A range of other interests. In the constantly evolving. Saturday, November 1, 2014. Dancing on the Ceiling. One morning between my first and second chemo treatments, I noticed that my view of the world had shrunk mightily. My broad chunk of doings from out there had narrowed to a few spots; each morning was filled with a sameness as I scanned walls, amazed that my view had withered so profoundly. Lee May's Gardening Life: A rose thrives, despite my efforts
http://www.leemaysgardeninglife.com/2014/05/a-rose-thrives-despite-my-efforts.html
The many life lessons. Unearthed when we dig. In the dirt . . . and pursue. A range of other interests. In the constantly evolving. Saturday, May 10, 2014. A rose thrives, despite my efforts. Some plants just won't die. The Rose, which I wrote about here,. Is one of those. It performed so elegantly last year, I wanted to put it in spot better than next to the mailbox. It's back and bigger than ever. Not because I didn't try. If I had succeeded in digging it up, the stress might have killed it –...May 10,...
Lee May's Gardening Life: Life of The Rose
http://www.leemaysgardeninglife.com/2013/09/life-of-rose.html
The many life lessons. Unearthed when we dig. In the dirt . . . and pursue. A range of other interests. In the constantly evolving. Wednesday, September 11, 2013. Life of The Rose. Before I got around to moving the plant, I decapitated it with one pull of the string-cutter trigger. Killed it dead. Or so I thought. Call it the rose with a heart. The rose with a supreme will to live. By any name it is beautiful. As is its example of survival in the harshest of circumstances. About Anna Davis, who is. An ex...
Lee May's Gardening Life: Humans and birds in annual seasonal search
http://www.leemaysgardeninglife.com/2014/03/humans-and-birds-in-annual-seasonal.html
The many life lessons. Unearthed when we dig. In the dirt . . . and pursue. A range of other interests. In the constantly evolving. Thursday, March 20, 2014. Humans and birds in annual seasonal search. The calendar says spring, and as always, this season stimulates the housing market. Like people, birds are on the hunt. To help us help the birds, longtime friends Sky and Di (Schuyler and Diana Rector) joined Lyn and me for lunch, bringing a brand new house that Sky made for bluebirds. That could happen, ...
Lee May's Gardening Life: Mayhem, New Shed and a New Start
http://www.leemaysgardeninglife.com/2013/06/mayhem-new-shed-and-new-start.html
The many life lessons. Unearthed when we dig. In the dirt . . . and pursue. A range of other interests. In the constantly evolving. Sunday, June 23, 2013. Mayhem, New Shed and a New Start. What delicious mayhem it was. That memory gets thinner all the time, pushed away by my new garden shed, the first one I've ever had. Previously, my garage served as a garden shed, but it was more a catch-all space that encouraged hoarding. Seeing my shed rise from bare ground was worth a few memory images. Part of that...

My Weeds Are Very Sorry
January 31, 2014. Four Years of Blogging. I started this blog four years ago today. It has been a rewarding diversion, and it has brought me commenters and friends from all over the world. When I started I was still a relatively new gardener, just beginning to realize I had something to show in pictures and something to share in observations. What fun it has been! It's time to sign off this blog. If you just found My Weeds Are Very Sorry, please visit the archives and read some old posts. January 26, 2014.

Laurrie's Garden Diary
Saturday, August 15, 2015. Nice summer weather for August. Hot, but not too hot, sunny but with a breeze, and nights are chilly. Hydrangea 'Preziosa' is a smaller, rounded hydrangea that is sometimes listed as a mophead, sometimes as H. serrata, and it is marginally hardy here. The blooms turn wine red in summer and fall. This is what they look like in autumn:. I took this at Whiteflower Farm in October. But the one by the patio wall is starting to look like a gardener's inspiration. I can see it up ...
