Lawrence was a normal, bright, happy and healthy boy who had a wicked sense of humour and was mad about football. When Lawrence was six he started to have difficulties with his hearing. These problems got worse over the next few months and in October 2004 a brain scan revealed that Lawrence was suffering from an extremely rare degenerative condition called Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). Within six months of the diagnosis Lawrence was unable to move,. Could no longer talk and had to be fed by tube.

Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a rare genetically inherited degenerative condition. ALD is one of a group of disorders called the leukodystrophies where the fatty covering of the nerve fibres (myelin sheath) breaks down which prevents the nerves from working as they should. There are various forms of ALD, but the two most common ones are childhood and. Not all boys who test positive for ALD go on to develop the symptoms described above and some will lead full and normal lives.

On the 3rd of December Lawrence developed a sickness bug and became very ill. He was taken into hospital and seemed to have made a full recovery the next morning – after fish fingers and chips for lunch (! Nearly half the world's population has no access to clean water. 2 million people die each year from preventable water related diseases. One child dies every 15 seconds from these diseases. A typical South African child has to walk 3km to get fresh water and will have to carry a 25 litre drum of water back home every day. It was touch and go for a while there but eventually I began to hold on my own (out of the box I lived in a for a while) and moved out into the world. Not sure where those standing around me back then saw me being 25 years later, but I hope I've lived up to some of it! As I type this I reflect upon what has happened in my 25 years.
