Adolescent Literature: Persepolis and "Using Graphic Novels, Anime, and the Internet in an Urban High School"
http://leahmcdermott.blogspot.com/2009/11/persepolis-and-using-graphic-novels.html
Blogs from English 426: Adolescent Literature at Shippensburg University. Persepolis and "Using Graphic Novels, Anime, and the Internet in an Urban High School". I was introduced to. Ideally, I would like to work with a Social Studies teacher to make this a cross-curricular unit- obviously someone in that field would (should) have more knowledge about the issues that. Realistically, what types of texts are the students going to be reading later in their lives? I did like how this article related the usef...
Adolescent Literature: The Book Thief and "Teaching Holocaust Literature"
http://leahmcdermott.blogspot.com/2009/10/book-thief-and-teaching-holocaust.html
Blogs from English 426: Adolescent Literature at Shippensburg University. The Book Thief and "Teaching Holocaust Literature". I really enjoyed reading The Book Thief. And would absolutely include it in a unit on Holocaust literature. The point of view was interesting and was an excellent way of keeping the reader on edge. From an educator's perspective; however, I am much, much, MUCH more interested in discussing the article Teaching Holocaust Literature. How incredibly sad is this?
Adolescent Literature: Twilight and The Students' Right to Read
http://leahmcdermott.blogspot.com/2009/11/twilight-and-students-right-to-read.html
Blogs from English 426: Adolescent Literature at Shippensburg University. Twilight and The Students' Right to Read. Ok, I have to be honest- I did not enjoy reading. One bit. I continually had to force myself to keep reading. I found it to be tripe nonsense with simple vocabulary and boring plot lines. Now, does that mean that I would discourage my adolescent students from reading it? Where suspicion fills the air and holds scholars in line for fear of their jobs, there can be no exercise of the free int...

Blogs from English 426: Adolescent Literature at Shippensburg University. Before Draco Meets Harry - Fanfiction Blog. For my fanfiction piece, I have decided to add on to the beginning of the scene from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Where Draco Malfoy meets Harry Potter on the train to Hogwarts. I chose this scene, first of all, because I enjoyed reading Harry Potter. Much more than the other two novels that were a part of this project list; and also because I have read all of the Harry Potter.
Adolescent Literature: Final Thoughts

Blogs from English 426: Adolescent Literature at Shippensburg University. What have you learned about yourself as a teacher (or future teacher) of adolescent literature (or English) in this class? What strategies will you take from this class to apply in either the Methods course next semester or your own English classrooms? What books resonated the most with you? Which selections do you think should be kept/removed from the class? The books that I most enjoyed reading were The Chocolate War. Personally,...

Kayla's Blog: October 2009

Tuesday, October 27, 2009. I have to say that I really enjoyed this novel. However, I have always been interesting in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, so it wasn't surprising to me. I think this novel would be interesting to compare with "The Diary of Anne Frank". It would give two different aspects of the time period and what things were going on. Here is the URL if anyone is interested in watching the trailer : http:/ www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi751566873/. Wednesday, October 14, 2009. As far as teaching ...

Tuesday, December 1, 2009. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that not all students have read this novel, so as teachers, we can't assume that everyone is going to be prepared for it. I also liked that Glazner pointed out that we need to go beyond gender, class, and race when dealing with diversity. As I said before, we are not going to be able to cover every issue, but I think it is important to do the best that we can at exposing our students to many different types of diversity. Friday, October 23, 2009. The Book Thief and "A Class Divided". Well, first off, I LOVED The Book Thief. I started out struggling with it - the constant interruptions by our narrator were a bit distracting at first, but I got used to it quickly. It took me a while to get really into it, but I balled my eyes out the last 75 or so pages! After watching "A Class Divided," I must say, I was stunned. Stunned that a teacher had the guts (and the OK from administration? Monday, October 12, 2009. I thought the a...

Monday, September 28, 2009. While I know the subject matter is difficult (no one wants to read about rape, especially of a teenager/child! Monday, September 21, 2009. Boy Meets Boy and its Queer Utopia. It slowly made sense to me that it was a utopian society, as I thought to myself for the 10th time, “Where do they live? 8221; because, sadly, it is certainly uncharacteristic of any place here in the United States that I know of! To say Boy Meets. Was not sexually explicit in any way. It was just the...

I hope to inspire some intelligent discussion regarding our texts in the course, as well as other books I read in my free time! Comments are very welcome! Wednesday, October 28, 2009. I really enjoyed this book and think it could be used well in a classroom! I was also glad to see that "death" was pretty kind, and at least sympathetic. However, it would be neat to use excerpts in an 8th ...

Wednesday, November 4, 2009. Struggles of Young Males in an Eglish Classroom. 1) How does the "troubled classroom" stereotype affect the teachers approach to teaching the class? 2) How does context play a role with boys and their achievement in school? 3) In what ways can we (teachers) promote literacy among young men in our classroom? 4) How will having a male teacher in class change the boys' demeanor in your class? 5) do males and females find the same literature appealing? Tuesday, September 29, 2009. I thought the part dealing with the art teacher and the tree was very interesting. It brought out many important ideas in the novel. As far as teaching this novel in my class, I think I would like to try it. I would probably send a permission slip home with students stating that the novel had the idea of rape in it, but that it did not over take the novel. The main point of the novel was about this girl not speaking, and how she overcame this idea at the end. They were points...
