Differentiation on the Tennis Court | vsphysics

Thoughts about teaching physics. Differentiation on the Tennis Court. April 15, 2012. Would I call the practice a success? Hmm It was certainly not optimum. The better kids were bored at times, and were seen texting between rallys. The weaker kids were overwhelmed and lost at times, and I fear subjecting them to such a direct comparison with the other more talented (and sometimes younger) kids will damage their confidence. Instructors. Can we really expect. Is scarily too close to reality. You are commen...

Make Teachers Classroom Students | vsphysics
https://vsphysics.wordpress.com/2012/04/15/make-teachers-classroom-students
Thoughts about teaching physics. Make Teachers Classroom Students. April 15, 2012. As I mentioned in a previous post, I coach HS tennis. Last week I sensed our HS team was at a plateau with our practice routine. They were not getting a sense of the intensity and aggression I wanted to see on the court. So in an inspired moment, I decided to practice. To be a good student? What benefit could there be to the students if there was an adult teacher sitting next to them? How to do quality work on assignments.

More on Grade Inflation | vsphysics

Thoughts about teaching physics. More on Grade Inflation. January 7, 2012. What would you do if you were a parent in one of these cases? Wouldn’t you want your son or daughter to go to the school that gives the highest grades? What else are you paying for, really? Character education is nice, but colleges don’t measure that (as far as you know). Wouldn’t you send your son or daughter to a school that “informally guarantees” a minimum grade? Where does this end? From → Thoughts and Ideas. You are commenti...

Three Benefits of “Accumulation Grading with Tagging” | Solvable by Radicals

Laquo; Update on Student-Claimed Learning Goals. Scheduling Large and Small. Three Benefits of “Accumulation Grading with Tagging”. So I decided to give my grading system a name: Accumulation Grading (or Accumulation. I just sick of writing “this grading system” or “how I am grading” all of the time. Here are three benefits that I am seeing from this system. One has been mentioned before here (at least in the comments), one I anticipated, and one I only realized this week. Education Reform | vsphysics
https://vsphysics.wordpress.com/2011/12/05/education-reform
Thoughts about teaching physics. December 5, 2011. OK, I’ve been gone a while (and probably will be again). But the semester is almost over, and it looks like I’ll survive. So here’s a post to get back on-track… maybe…. When I can, I follow Twitter and people involved in education reform (#edreform). Today I read this article. Aren’t we supposed to be creating a “love of learning? Until colleges change their acceptance criteria, I don’t see anything changing for the better. This former teacher is embarki...

Thoughts about teaching physics. Smartest People I Know. July 15, 2011. 3) I wonder if he can get the World Cup matches? As a student of physics, I could define torque and how to calculate it. But it took my father to show me how to hook two combination wrenches together to increase the torque to remove a stubborn bolt. (My dad, the oldest of 12 kids, had to quit school after 10th grade to go to work.). How do I budget for the upcoming year? Indeed, how would colleges value this work? Leave a Reply Cance...
