Mummy will you play? Never be afraid to get down and play, even if you feel a bit silly! Dark days – a more serious post. If there is one thing, above all, likely to affect your child’s learning then I would say it is emotional turmoil. A friend of mine, himself now a teacher, once described to me how he had felt when, as a child, his parents had separated. ‘I couldn’t think about anything else,’ was his conclusion, having described how he would sit and stare at the work on his desk. Another quick idea – times tables. I invented this game for someone who really needed to learn times tables. The thought of doing a test or copying them out seemed too mind-numbing so I tried to think up a more enjoyable way! Bring forth the trusty dice! 1) Both contestants (or more) write down all the times table sums from 1 – 12 (but not the answers). For example: 1 x 4 =, 2 x 4 = etc. The winner is the first person to complete all their times tables. Simple but more interesting than rote! On the other...

Like it or loathe it, lavatorial humour appeals to many boys and girls. Well, you know what we say at little shoots: if they’re interested then make the most of it. Just don’t do any of it in front of grandma. Or before lunch. A few ideas, if you feel so inclined. 1) Rhyming strings – the ‘oo’ in poo, the ‘ee’ in wee, how many things can you think of that rhyme? Tree, see etc. You can do the same with lots of these sorts of words which seem to lend themselves to phonic word play! 6) Read the beginning of...

Science, teaching, ideas. How does the mind affect health? It is clear that we need our lives to have a purpose, to feel that our actions form part of something bigger than ourselves. In the Middle

September 10, 2013. September 10, 2013. I just responded maybe and then they kept talking about everything they regret and…. that really got me thinking about regret. I don’t know if with age its easier to regret because there is more to regret but honestly I seriously doubt it! I think regret is based on someone’s mentality. I learned about five years ago that it is POINTLESS to regret things you’ve done or things you should have done…I mean that is exhausting! 8221; To a teenager girl who thought she w...

Sinning Against the Greater Light. For of him unto whom much is given much is required;. And he who sins against the greater light. Shall receive the greater condemnation.". Do we understand what that means as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? Are we doing all of that? Are we as members of the Church doing all that we can to fulfill the great responsibility that we have been entrusted with? So is the exchange worth it? I dare say that it does not. I actually think that I have mo...
