Leaves of Eve, the Online Nature Journal of Debi Cates-Bleam

Monday, February 08, 2010. Race Field Week 01 - summary. Time has rolled around and is February once again. The leaves that continue to hang on fourwing saltbush have turned dull, the curly grass is getting torn and gray, the birds and critters have eaten every last berry and seed. Even the bright, sunny sky that we are lucky to have so frequently seems part of the conspiracy to wash out all color, all signs of vibrancy. But it's February in West Texas, and that's the way it is. Race Field Week 01. Milip...

Leaves of Eve, the Online Nature Journal of Debi Cates-Bleam: Saltbush scale

http://leavesofeve.blogspot.com/2009/02/untitled.html

Wednesday, February 25, 2009. Click to view larger. Here's something new I've noticed out on my West Odessa treks, this crusty growth. So far I've only seen it on fourwing saltbushes ( Atriplex canescens. And so far only on young ones. That is to say, on salt bushes that have grown to be a few twigs only. This stuff - whatever it is - raises a lot of questions for me. It appears to be parasitic, is it? Is it a fungus? Or could it be the work of some sort of insect? Will it kill the saltbush? UPDATE: Burr...

Leaves of Eve, the Online Nature Journal of Debi Cates-Bleam: Symmetry

http://leavesofeve.blogspot.com/2009/02/symmetry.html

Thursday, February 26, 2009. Time only for a short post this morning. But time enough to share some symmetry in one of my favorite plants, the creosote bush. It has stripes! Strange how it grows, almost like grass. Interesting. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). National Wildlife Refuges in Texas. Nature Conservancy in Texas. Old Things Forgotten (homespun variety). Leaves of Eve, the Online Nature Journal of Debi Cates-Bleam: Race Field Week 01 - impaled bird head

http://leavesofeve.blogspot.com/2007/02/test.html

Monday, February 08, 2010. Race Field Week 01 - impaled bird head. Ew Gross, right? Imagine my surprise when I shooed away my dog Ansel to see what he was licking. It's not everyday you see a bird's head impaled like this. In fact, I've only seen it once before and then it was a grasshopper, not a bird, that had met this gruesome fate. Like this bird, only the grasshopper's poor head remained. Here is an interesting video on Youtube of a shrike. Capturing a mouse and impaling it, from Israel. They are sh...

Leaves of Eve, the Online Nature Journal of Debi Cates-Bleam: Race Field Week 01 - mantis egg case

http://leavesofeve.blogspot.com/2010/02/race-field-week-01-mantis-egg-case.html

Monday, February 08, 2010. Race Field Week 01 - mantis egg case. I wish I had marked the location of this mantis egg case with a piece of wool so I would be sure to find it again! I'd love to watch it hatch in the spring. Baby mantises look like mini-me's of adults. Better yet, maybe next time I see one, I'll bring it home with me, put it in a jar, and when the babies hatch, my grandchildren and I can release them into my garden. After taking photos, of course. Leaves of Eve, the Online Nature Journal of Debi Cates-Bleam: Race Field Week 01 - goat bones

http://leavesofeve.blogspot.com/2010/02/race-field-week-01-goat-bones.html

Monday, February 08, 2010. Race Field Week 01 - goat bones. Here's evidence of knuckleheads who think West Odessa fields, and West Odessa in general, is a great place to dump. At least animal carcasses are biodegradable. And when the dry desert and hot sun get done with them, they are quite beautiful even. But not all trash is organic or remotely beautiful. Some of it is quite toxic. Even "just" household trash can contain some serious toxic waste. Sometimes, I think about adding "*sshole! Michael L....

The Many Hats of Debi Cates: Thatsa big acorn

http://debicates.blogspot.com/2011/01/thatsa-big-acorn.html

Saturday, January 22, 2011. Odessa, Texas. Jan 20, 2011. I love these big acorns. I like the frilly edges too. And according to this site. A burr oak is a good candidate for making acorn meal, with less tannin than other oaks. I've got to remember that next year in the fall. Everything in Texas is supposed to be bigger. I had no idea that the burr oak had such big acorns. Ive looked for them in ET but never have come across one. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). West Odessa, Texas, USA. S by Debi Cates.

The Many Hats of Debi Cates: Ansel the Dog

http://debicates.blogspot.com/2011/01/ansel-dog.html

Wednesday, January 12, 2011. West Odessa, Texas. Jan 12, 2011. Ansel is named after the famous American photographer Ansel Adams. I named him that because I found him while I was out taking photos one day. That and because he's black and white. He was just a puppy, dumped, scared, starving, with hardly had any life left in him. Now he's full grown, full of life, and turns out to be one big knucklehead. PS He licked my camera lens after this photo. Ditto on Oakland Daily Photo. West Odessa, Texas, USA.

The Many Hats of Debi Cates: It's Bobble Time again

Thursday, January 13, 2011. It's Bobble Time again. It's Bobble Time again. West Odessa, Texas. Jan 13, 2011. It's out of focus, it's grainy, but man I love the composition the dried heads of sunflowers and saw-tooth daisies make in the winter, "bobbles" I look forward to every year. I always love your blues. I dont even have the words to adequately describe how your blues make me feel. I love your bobbles too, the way they dry such a nice straw color, the roundness, the beauty even when dry. Donna's Wes...

http://debicates.blogspot.com/2011/01/west-texas-coral.html

Tuesday, January 18, 2011. West Odessa, Texas. Jan 18 2011. Um, yeah, there's not any coral in West Texas. Instead this is an interesting piece of burned plastic I picked up in my wandering around the oil fields. Labels: Things are things. It makes an interesting sculpture doesnt it? I see a dog and a person. Just got caught up on your blog. Im behind on my own and everyone elses too! Love the pillow in another post! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). West Odessa, Texas, USA. The Many Hats of Debi Cates: I love this cup

http://debicates.blogspot.com/2011/01/i-love-this-cup.html

Saturday, January 15, 2011. I love this cup. West Odessa, Texas. Jan 15 2011. Lately, I have been thinking about my mom, even more than normal. And suddenly I realized, I've been thinking about her since I began using this extra tall, pretty Chinese cup she gave me, a cup she used for a long time. I drink out of it all day long. I love this cup even more since it reminds me of her. Hm, some hot green tea sounds really good right now. Labels: Things are things. I love this cup and your mom and you too :).

Wednesday, January 19, 2011. Fasciation in a Sophora secundiflora. Time Machine Master Gardener's Garden, Odessa, Texas. Jan 19 2011. This odd fan form is not normal. It's is actually a kind of mutation at the cellular level, caused by a pest, genetics, damage, or other unknown factors. Some plants are prone to fasciation. I've seen it on several different specimens of the Sophora sedundiflora. Thats how evolution works. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). West Odessa, Texas, USA. S by Debi Cates. Janet ...

The Many Hats of Debi Cates: Conversation with a Camera

http://debicates.blogspot.com/2011/03/conversation-with-camera.html

Thursday, March 24, 2011. Conversation with a Camera. Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again. The Master doesn’t seek fulfillment. Not seeking, not expecting,. She is present, and can welcome all things. Lao-tzu, Tao Te Ching. Taking photos has become integral to how I experience life. To welcome those vanishing, unexpected things. The photo, even a thousand photos are still just a fract...

Leaves Of Crass | An opinionated view on all manner of things …

An opinionated view on all manner of things …. I’m tired and I want to go . Oh, if you really must . If I was Fernando Alonso right now, concussion aside, I’d be sat at home wondering what the hell was going on and how I’d manoeuvred myself out of a (now) semi-competitive car in the 2015 . Is it me you’re looking for? Probably not, but for those of you who found your way here and find yourselves wanting to stay, just like Mr Tumble, I say hello.* To explain what ‘here’. Mar 16, 2015. A poem from the future. February 4, 2015. Editor’s note: This poem kicks off a new Question Worth Asking series: How weird will the future be? First up: a piece from poet and TED Fellow Ben Burke. Dear Helen- So sorry. Didn’t have time to write that poem. But my future self sent me one yesterday. So we’re good. Crazy, right? It’s totally legit and actually from the future, so no need to double-check, you’re probably too busy anyway. Happy New Year! TOO MANY RIVERS, NOT ENOUGH LAKES. 1,168 more words.
