The canelé first appeared in Bordeaux, a French city well-known for its quality red wine. The most popular story tells that canelés were invented by a group of 17th century nuns at the convent of L’Annonciade in Bordeaux. Although canelés origins have never been proved, experts believe that they appeared in some form in the 1700s.
