LETTERS FROM SHEPPEY: The Drought Goes on

http://lettersfromsheppey.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-drought-goes-on.html

Life, Times and Natural History from the Isle Of Sheppey in Kent. Wednesday, 22 July 2015. The Drought Goes on. Those of you who know the Harty Road will recognise the next photo, it's Capel Fleet at "Capel Corner". This normally wide and fairly deep body of water has been reduced to a very shallow and smelly stretch, choked with large areas of green blanket weed. So shallow in fact that this Heron is now able to wade well out into it in search of food. 23 July 2015 at 00:15. View my complete profile.

LETTERS FROM SHEPPEY: Rumbles in the Countryside

http://lettersfromsheppey.blogspot.com/2015/07/rumbles-in-countryside.html

Life, Times and Natural History from the Isle Of Sheppey in Kent. Sunday, 19 July 2015. Rumbles in the Countryside. Nowadays it is home to an impressive list of breeding birds, aided by several nest boxes put up by myself. Breeding birds such as Whitethroats, Blue, Great and Long-tailed Tits, Robins, Wrens, Blackbird, Jackdaws and possibly Little Owl, have all done very well in recent years. In a recent blog one of the guys was suggesting that something should be done about dog walkers who walk their dog...

LETTERS FROM SHEPPEY: January 2015

http://lettersfromsheppey.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Life, Times and Natural History from the Isle Of Sheppey in Kent. Sunday, 18 January 2015. Another Harrier Roost Count. Sunday, 4 January 2015. Anyway, after choking on my toast and marmite while reading that, another glance out of the window showed that the fog wasn't lifting at all and so I set off anyway, arriving at the reserve in thick fog and general dampness at 8.20. I say thick fog but it could of been thick mist - what exactly is the bloody difference. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

LETTERS FROM SHEPPEY: February 2015

http://lettersfromsheppey.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Life, Times and Natural History from the Isle Of Sheppey in Kent. Wednesday, 25 February 2015. Twitching and High Tides. Walking along towards them, I couldn't work out why they needed to circle the bird on the saltings when presumably better views must of been available from the top of the sea wall a couple of yards away and when I walked out to speak to them they admitted that they couldn't see the bird in the long vegetation, so why were they there? The following morning, Sunday, I returned to the res...

LETTERS FROM SHEPPEY: Glorious Harty

http://lettersfromsheppey.blogspot.com/2015/08/glorious-harty.html

Life, Times and Natural History from the Isle Of Sheppey in Kent. Sunday, 2 August 2015. Early morning today on Harty and the reserve saw one of those visits where it was just such a real privilege to be out and about on such a glorious morning. At 600 this morning the weather was absolutely pristine and breasting the top of Capel Hill the last of the dawn mist was still rising above the length of Capel Fleet. This was the view along Capel Fleet itself. While taking this photo of one of the reserve's bet...

Hadlow tree warden: Cricket bat willows

http://hadlowtreewardening.blogspot.com/2013/03/cricket-bat-willows.html

Thursday, 28 March 2013. I think I've found some cricket bat willows on the far side of the River Medway to the South of the parish boundary. There seems to be a short "almost" avenue (although the tree to the front of the group on the left hand side is actually an oak I think). The trees to the right are what I think to be genuine Cricket Bat Willows, usually referred to as. Sm) Sm. but also known as the cultivar 'Caerulea'. Both types lose their upperside hairs relatively quickly, but var. alba. Less t...

Hadlow tree warden: Scots Pine along the College Drive on the first real day of winter

http://hadlowtreewardening.blogspot.com/2012/11/some-college-trees-on-first-real-day-of.html

Thursday, 29 November 2012. Scots Pine along the College Drive on the first real day of winter. I spent a chilly hour this afternoon walking Monty around the front of the college campus and took a few photos. The bark of the Scots Pine is wonderful multi-coloured layered flakes - usually with a more orange shading higher up the trunk that is more developed in this species than almost any other pine. The trees are well furnished with this year's young female cones newly closed having received pollen in th...

Hadlow tree warden: More Scots Pine further up the drive

http://hadlowtreewardening.blogspot.com/2012/11/more-scots-pine-further-up-drive.html

Friday, 30 November 2012. More Scots Pine further up the drive. This picture, taken looking very high up towards the top of one of the Scots Pine trees along the upper part of the drive, shows a typical "rip-out" scar of a dropped branch from surprisingly high up in the canopy. Its such a shame that such a high branch has been lost and its a bit difficult to imagine how it happened! I had never noticed this following structural difference before, only the obvious colour change as you go up the trunk!

Hadlow tree warden: The wonderful oaks along the college drive!

http://hadlowtreewardening.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-wonderful-oaks-along-drive-and.html

Friday, 30 November 2012. The wonderful oaks along the college drive! This is one of the younger oak trees along the drive, towards Garrard House, maybe over fifty years old, vigorous and in good health. This next picture is of one of the best trees in the whole parish, an old giant of an oak that sits just outside Garrard House, and must be well over 100 years old. The surface of the decaying heartwood looks as though it has been covered with black wound paint - the wood below looks much paler - now ver...

The Tortoise Man: November 2011

http://thetortoiseman.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Whilst I'm very much a "novice birder" (encouraged by my 8 year old son) I also enjoy, seek out, and try to photograph other local wildlife too. The area's that I frequent are between Maidstone, East/West Malling, Mereworth, through to Hadlow. My adopted patch is situated on the borders of East Peckham and Mereworth, its St. Michaels Church and the surrounding area. Tuesday, 22 November 2011. Isle of Sheppey, Part 2. The first birds seen were Turnstones. Im pretty sure that in amongst the Ringed plovers ...

Thursday, 28 August 2014. Cracking Days Birding at Dungeness. I decided a day trip to Dungeness was in order today in the hope of catching up with some of the star birds that had been reported there yesterday , my first port of call was the screen hide over looking the ARC pit and my target birds there were Red Necked Phalarope and Little Stint. I bumped into Andy there and he kindly put me onto the RNP. Another Digi scoped pic of the RNP. In its fine juv plumage. I watched this bird for a good hour and ...

Friday, 27 February 2015. Black Scoter and Waxwing Up North. On Wednesday 25th February i teamed up with Richard in the very early hours and headed to Northumberland in the hope of seeing the adult drake Black Scoter. Which would be a lifer for both of us , Richard made great time getting us there and we pulled into the car park at Cheswick at approx 8am . We walked through the sand dunes and started scanning the sea for any Scoters. There were lots of Long Tailed Ducks. And Red Breasted Mergansers.

Letters From Screwtape

Sunday, October 21, 2012. This was one of the talks that had the greatest impact on me from conference. At times I have certainly acted the complete opposite of what the Lord expects of me. I have done what I needed to do to simply get by. My sense of urgency toward my responsibilities has been minimal. Why do more than necessary to make things happen? If I can build a home using one brick, why use two? Why use four when two would work? This seems to be the mentality of men these days. Men, where are we?

Tuesday, January 27, 2009. Tops and Sows climb aboard the truck, carefully setting their bodies on the planks that straddle the metal lattice welded to the truck bed. There's Falil's boy with the ram, ripe for selling at the marche. Driver says three hundred? Tops and Sows and a stranger move westward along the route nationale. Look at that truck! There must be 25 people sitting up there plus three more inside. Say who's that fellow in the middle? Sure, always room for one. Hold my baby up front sir?

Thursday, April 16, 2015. I think i suffer from seasonal depression. because that winter was really getting me down. march was rough. full of emotional and mental crises. and bitterly cold weather. but then the first sunny day hit and it was like a light came on. such sweet relief! And i celebrated by doing what i do best: repeating history. so when spring hit and blossoms bloomed, a group of friends and i decided to drive down to dc an see the cherry blossoms in our great nation's capital. What's so emb...

Letters from Shenanigan Valley Idaho

Letters from Shenanigan Valley Idaho. Thursday, January 18, 2018. The Bookshop in the Old Train Depot. The trains don't run through Alnwick, Northumberland any longer. The Victorian-era depot was built a bit grander than other small town depots along the line because the Duke of Northumberland would await his train down to London there and others of the landed class would arrive at the depot for shoots and balls at Alnwick Castle and then depart through it. An electric train rattled overhead. Jay bought ...

LETTERS FROM SHEPPEY

Life, Times and Natural History from the Isle Of Sheppey in Kent. Sunday, 1 April 2018. Easter Sunday - closed for business. I'm down at my partner's house in beautiful Surrey this weekend, so a change in scenery, though just as wet, where isn't at the moment! Below is the River Broadwater, which was in full flood and flowing very fast. The Broadwater is formed where the River Blackwater to the left and the River Whitewater to the right, converge. As you can see. Further along one lane we came across a b...
