Lillian's Gardening Notebook: Winter Garden
http://lilliansgardeningnotebook.blogspot.com/2008/12/winter-garden.html
This is a place for me to make gardening notes. It's mostly for my own use, but you might find something worth knowing here. Tuesday, December 23, 2008. Here's my garden, sleeping beneath the snow. Time for snuggling into my warm little burrow and planning for next year. I am still growing things: sprouts! I got a nifty sprout-growing set for my birthday and it's fun (not to mention, delicious) to have fresh, green growing things around. Stay warm everybody! May 24, 2009 at 5:57 PM.
Lillian's Gardening Notebook: Harvest Season Gets Underway
http://lilliansgardeningnotebook.blogspot.com/2008/08/harvest-season-gets-underway.html
This is a place for me to make gardening notes. It's mostly for my own use, but you might find something worth knowing here. Thursday, August 21, 2008. Harvest Season Gets Underway. The other day I went to all the trouble of taking and uploading pictures and then I completely forgot to update my blog with them! The garden, just over one month after planting. The tomatoes are almost as tall as me and I've given up trying to stake them up. So far they have lots of flowers and green fruit. My first bean blo...
Lillian's Gardening Notebook: End of the Growing Season
http://lilliansgardeningnotebook.blogspot.com/2008/12/end-of-growing-season.html
This is a place for me to make gardening notes. It's mostly for my own use, but you might find something worth knowing here. Saturday, December 20, 2008. End of the Growing Season. After the october frosts, all the tender crops looked like this. I simply can't imagine how many cucumbers I would have had if I'd started earlier in the year. As it was, I struggled to use them all! The obstinate wax beans surprised me with their cold tolerance and I wound up harvesting more in October than earlier in the year.
Lillian's Gardening Notebook: September 2008

This is a place for me to make gardening notes. It's mostly for my own use, but you might find something worth knowing here. Wednesday, September 17, 2008. Update and Cauliflowers Finally Doing Something. A couple of days ago I went in the garden to get rid of the gigantic cauliflower plants that, until that point, hadn't done anything but crowd my cabbages. Fortunately I peeked into the center of all the leaves and there I found some tiny white florets! Saturday, September 6, 2008. Not much else has pro...

Extra Schmaltz!: Saving chicken broth
http://extraschmaltz.blogspot.com/2015/02/saving-chicken-broth.html
Saturday, February 21, 2015. This is a really just a tiny useful technique thing, but we find it really helpful in our house. Whenever I used to make chicken broth, I would wait till it cooled, then find old tupperware, jars, etc to put the broth in. The problem is, I mostly use broth in small quantities, so it was a pain to thaw just some of that broth for use. Here's a fuzzy picture of some of my broth muffins:. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Extra Schmaltz- because there is no other way.
Extra Schmaltz!: Savory chicken apricot pie
http://extraschmaltz.blogspot.com/2015/06/savory-chicken-apricot-pie.html
Monday, June 29, 2015. Savory chicken apricot pie. One of my favorite dishes that they had, which was a special and so only available certain days, was a chicken apricot pie. I don't think this is an authentic dish in any particular country, but represents the kind of fusiony approach that make MedCaf so popular. This is the recipe from my third time making it, since the first couple just didn't come close enough to what I remember. 250 grams qamar addin. 2 large chicken breasts, or 3 small. Welcome to o...
Extra Schmaltz!: Around the house bread making
http://extraschmaltz.blogspot.com/2015/02/around-house-bread-making.html
Saturday, February 21, 2015. Around the house bread making. So I've posted a few bread recipes here, but this post is more about my technique, since I've gotten it down to enough of a science that it makes less mess than most bread recipes, and the results are always really good. Here's the basic recipe I use to make a really nice, hearty sandwich bread, but hold in mind I mostly eyeball these quantities. This makes 2 two-pound loaves of sandwich bread. 4 cups white flour. 3 cups wheat flour. This last s...
Extra Schmaltz!: Szechuan Peppercorn Chicken with Eggplant
http://extraschmaltz.blogspot.com/2014/09/szechuan-peppercorn-chicken-with.html
Monday, September 1, 2014. Szechuan Peppercorn Chicken with Eggplant. I made this with Japanese eggplants, but if you only have normal eggplant, cutting it into cubes might actually be nice, since they'd be a similar shape to the chicken chunks. 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs (breasts reheat better for leftovers), cubed. 5 Japanese eggplants, in slices. 3 2 cloves garlic, sliced. 15 teaspoons peeled sliced fresh ginger. 1 heaping tablespoon szechuan peppercorn. Add oil to the hot p...

Sunday, January 18, 2015. Lamb Kufta with Eggs. These are meatballs for when your grandmother isn't. Coming over. They are garlicky and full of spices, with jolly hard-boiled eggs for added satisfaction, providing a great mess of comfort food for a cold winter night. I got the recipe from Cracking Curries. Delicious over basmati rice. Orange juice serving suggestion from Dan. 1 lb ground lamb. 1 egg, beaten (or less). 1 tsp black pepper. 3 Tbsp. butter. 1 large onion, sliced. 2 medium tomatoes, diced.
Extra Schmaltz!: Iftaar with Christians
http://extraschmaltz.blogspot.com/2007/10/iftaar-with-christians.html
Sunday, October 7, 2007. Maqluuba("Upside down") with meat. 1 pound boneless meat, cut into small pieces. Eggplants, probably 2-3 sufficient depending on size. Spices: Curry, Cinnamon, S&P. When finished, put a serving pan on top of the saucepan, flip, and serve with yogurt sauce/salad below(placed beside the dish on the plate, not on top). The eggplant being placed above the meat:. The rice with spices on top - next you add the liquid. A large quantity of tomatoes(ripe tomatoes are quite cheap here, but...

the lala update
Wednesday, July 1, 2009. Let me re-introduce myself to myself and my friends reading here! I am a happy shepherdess farmer gal, who comes from the cheltenham/jenkintown area, has been living it up in berks county for 4 years now. I moved around a little bit last year - all among good folks and in supportive environments. I moved my sheep as well, but more about that soon! There are lots of flowers and berries to pick, which makes me a very happy camper! Lambing season 2009 lasted for 2 solid months!
My Food Journal
Friday, March 18, 2011. This will be my last post on this blog. But I promise, I'm not done blogging about food! I'm just starting over at with a new blog called scratch. Http:/ scratch-eats.blogspot.com/. Switching blogs has been an idea a long time coming. I've been contemplating the thought for about six months now, and I finally decided to do it. So, don't give up on me! Recently I was watching food network and a certain cook I sometimes enjoy watching (no need to mention names, right? I haven't been...
