Mount Bate was named in 1862 by Captain George Henry Richards of the Royal Navy. Richards was at first in-charge of the surveying vessel HMS Plumper. And then the HMS Hecate. Not directly surrounding the sanctuary but guarding the entrance at the mouth of Perry Creek is Malaspina Peak. A Presumed First Ascent' written for the Island Bushwhacker.
