Wednesday, May 30, 2007. The article linked on Charlie G's website, Elite Colleges Open New Door to Low Income Youth, seemed more like a profile than a feature. It definitely had potential to be a feature had stories of other low income youths been shared. However, the focus was on Jack at Amherst. Regardless, I really enjoyed reading this article. Elle Parle: Feature for Week 10

http://lindseymavian.blogspot.com/2007/05/feature-for-week-10.html

Sunday, May 27, 2007. Feature for Week 10. This link to a feature titled "First Amendment Pressures Mount for High School Journalism" is published on Poynteronline. I found the article particularly relevant to our class because of a discussion we had about censorship and the Index. It gives a good range of opinions and even pulls in some history on court cases that is interesting. There is a lot of room for this piece to improve but, again, I like the topic. Elle Parle: Reading Response: Underworld

http://lindseymavian.blogspot.com/2007/05/reading-response-underworld.html

Wednesday, May 9, 2007. I never would have believed that I could become that fascinated in the life of a coal miner and what it is like to actually work in the coal mine. Although this piece was really long, I read it all and really enjoyed it. I wish I had read it in print form though, with the pictures and the layout. Sometimes I find reading on the Internet. A chore, not half as enjoyable as the real thing. Charlie's pick for a feature this week really hit home with me though for several reasons.

Elle Parle: Spring has Sprung and so has Senioritis

http://lindseymavian.blogspot.com/2007/05/spring-has-sprung-and-so-has-senioritis.html

Tuesday, May 22, 2007. Spring has Sprung and so has Senioritis. Note to my workshop group: I have two interviews Wednesday where I will insert the details on the conversations. I outlined how I want the piece to go but it is lacking the direct quotes. I will post it as soon as I finish the interview! Draybuck explains “I feel like for four years I have, in various ways, put my life on hold because of school. I guess I’m finally realizing that there is life beyond K. In the end I know ...Not putting in ef...

Elle Parle: Week 8 Reading Response

http://lindseymavian.blogspot.com/2007/05/week-8-reading-response.html

Wednesday, May 16, 2007. Week 8 Reading Response. The second and third page dragged on to me. It seemed like I was reading a text book and it was not interesting. Perhaps there was not enough action for me, but I agree that the author could have been more successul had she removed herself from the piece. The stories she recounts about the people she meets are more interesting to me. The lack of direct quotes is boring. Lindsey M. Craig. May 16, 2007 at 8:26 PM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Zoo Journal: Untitled Final Feature

http://kcarsok.blogspot.com/2007/05/untitled-final-feature.html

Wednesday, May 23, 2007. Endless rows of corn stretch as far as the eye can see out the window of Amtrak’s 351 Pere Marquette train riding from Detroit to Chicago. The bland, dusty yellow nothingness goes on for hundreds of miles, punctuated by signs warning of deadly pesticide applications. Worse yet is the industrialized meat market. Epidemics spread quickly among animals when they are confined to the inhumanely crowded living quarters that are customary to US livestock and poultry production. ...In Ka...

Lauren's Journalism Jottings: April 2007

http://journalistlauren.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html

A forum for furthering my growth as a journalist. Wednesday, April 25, 2007. This profile hits it. We see a public figure in private- tooling around his home, ferociously reading paperbacks, struggling with his genius. I appreciate the reportage because Gorney clearly spent lots of time with Geisel or at least asked the right questions. I found myself asking 'how did she find that out? And yet also being surprised that I would ask that, because the piece flowed so seamlessly. Thursday, April 19, 2007.

Caitlin's Journalism Blogs: Sorry everyone... can I try again?

http://ziggimawara.blogspot.com/2007/05/sorry-everyone-can-i-try-again.html

Tuesday, May 8, 2007. Sorry everyone. can I try again? So, after reading some comments, I realize I completely missed the ball this the last article- it wasn’t a feature. I was looking for “messy” and just got crap. It was scattered and needed more focus. I apologize to everyone who did read it. I’m posting a new article. I’m sorry to make people read twice. This one isn’t so messy, but is a feature on a new band called Panic! Again, sorry for the last piece! But in case you still want to take a look:.

Zoo Journal: Eating Well and Keeping it Local

Tuesday, May 1, 2007. Eating Well and Keeping it Local. A colorful sign boasting groceries and fresh produce invites pedestrians of the Kalamazoo Mall inside, where they might find that this is no average grocery store. Petite yellow signs cry out, Local! 8220;I eat nasty food sometimes too,” Finch admits, “but when I’m eating well I feel better.” Does she feel like she is giving up a lot to eat this way? 8220;Yes- the potential for thousands of dollars of medical bills.”. Charlie's Class Blog: April 2007

http://chmack34.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 26, 2007. The readings on Virginia Tech are pretty scary. It's insane to think that someone could just walk into a classroom and start shooting. This is particularly creepy since an incident of much smaller proportion happened on our campus a few years ago, and on top of it all the guy at KVCC. Really went and stirred things up. The profile on Cho. Is especially haunting because it seems that people did almost everything in their power to prevent this, other than having Cho. Possible....

The Hot Sauce: May 2007

http://sauceishot.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 30, 2007. I really liked Charlie's pick for this week with the article "Elite Colleges Open New Door to Low-Income Youths" by Sara Rimer in. The New York Times. I think that this piece is a great example of something short, sweet, and interesting. The piece then flashes back quickly, which does a good job of providing personal background information. The flashback is inserted at just the right moment to allow the reader to continue building Jack's character. Wednesday, May 23, 2007. In abo...

Lindsey Mayfield - Home

I like to think that my childhood was rather non-traditional. I spent my preteen years listening to Ronald Reagan speeches, playing Cash Flow for Kids and starting a newspaper in my 5th grade classroom. Later, I became editor-in-chief. Of my high school newspaper, wrote a blog for U.S. News and World Report. Spent eight weeks working in London. And appeared as a guest on the TOD AY Sh. I was the first college intern to be hired as a full-time producer. I got to prove a lot of people wrong -.
