Other Insect Orders

http://www.livingworldphotography.net/photos/other_insect_orders/index.html

Achurum carinatum (Longheaded Toothpick Grasshopper). Can you find this incredibly well camouflaged grasshopper. I certainly would have missed it had I not seen it fly and land here. It blends perfectly with the dead grasses and such around it. This was identified by Stephen Giamari at the PPDC in Sacramento. It's a Stiletto Fly in the family Therevidae. Agapostemon sp (Sweat Bee). This brightly colored bee are often found around flowers. They're also attracted to sweat, but relatively harmless. This was...

Flowers I-P

http://www.livingworldphotography.net/photos/flowers_ip/index.html

Calochortus umbellatus - Oakland Mariposa Lily. This plain yet elegant lily is the Oakland Mariposa Lily (or Star tulip). Impatiens pallida (Pale Touch-me-not). These are really cool. The reason they're called touch-me-nots is that when they form seed pod, they explode when you touch them. I kid you not, they actually explode with an audible pop, though I'm not sure how. Ipomoea indica - Oceanblue Morning Glory. Ipomopsis aggregata - Scarlet Gilia. This is a very showy member of the Phlox family. This br...

Flowers Q-Z

http://www.livingworldphotography.net/photos/flowers_qz/index.html

Ranunculus californica - California Buttercup. This is the only buttercup in Northern California with more than 7 petals and yellow. Once again I don't have much to say about this species. Unfortunately, botany is not my primary field, or I might know a bit more. Rhexia nuttallii - Nuttall's Meadowbeauty. This is in the family Melastomataceae, and looks a bit odd for a Rhexia. Rhododendron macrophyllum - Rhododendron. Rhynchospora colorata (Narrow-Leaf White-topped Sedge). Rubus sp - Blackberry. Sabatia ...

Landscapes

I'm not certain whether these are birch or aspen, but there were huge stand of them at 9000 feet by Kolob Reservoir. I love the white and green contrast. This lake was at nearly 8500' and was in the shadow of Lassen Peak. This was taken at an small school looking over the town of Nogales. Who have though a desert would have such a huge thunderstorm rolling through. Located near Everglades NP, this swamp was home to hundreds of birds and alligators, not to mention beautiful, large Cypress trees. Taken in ...

Tiger Beetles

http://www.livingworldphotography.net/photos/tiger_beetles/index.html

Cicindela formosa formosa - Big Sands Tiger Beetle. This is the nominate subspecies of Cicindela formosa. The red coloration is typical of this subspecies. Cicindela oregona (Oregon Tiger Beetle). Among the fastest moving land insects in the world, this large and often brightly colored subfamily of Ground Beetles are found in a wide variety of habitats. This particular species can often be found on the beach. Cicindela punctulata - Sidewalk Tiger Beetle. Here's another pic of Cicindela punctulata. Anothe...

Shield-Winged Insects: Aspen Grove July 2014

http://shieldwinged.blogspot.com/2014/07/aspen-grove-july-2014.html

To Earth's most fascinating, diverse and overlooked creatures. Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Aspen Grove July 2014. We started our day journey on the trail to Stewart Falls, located two miles west of Aspen Grove family camp on the east-facing slopes of Mt. Timpanogos. I was lucky to have even noticed this mostly hidden longhorn; Pseudogaurotina cressoni. Aside from the longhorn, these bumble bee like scarabs were out flying from flower to flower. A flower chafer, Trichiotinus assimilis. July 30, 2014 at 9:06 AM.

Acanthocereus tetragonus - Barbed Wire Cactus. This grew to be huge, draping over trees in long, thin strands. This is a threatened species, like many cacti in the keys. Agalinis purpurea - Flase Foxglove. Another member of the snapdragon family. Agave braceana - Brace's Century Plant. Agoseris apargioides (Coast Dandelion). It's a dandelion. It lives on the coastal sand dunes. Hence: Coast Dandelion. Agoseris aurantiaca (Orange Agoseris). Another Sand Verbena, this one from New Mexico. This odd plant gr...

Robber Flies

http://livingworldphotography.typepad.com/photos/robber_flies/index.html

Cyrtopogon probably C. evidens. Identified by Eric Fisher, only saw two of these, they're about 1cm long or less, I just happened to spot it on a rock. Diogmites misellus - Hanging Thieve. This is a Robber Fly in the family Asilidae. They are very accomplished hunters and can be very large, over 3cm! Mating pair of Efferia at the sand dunes in New Mexico. This was finally ID'd as an Efferia. Here's a pretty robber fly that I found at the top of Bootjack Trail at Muir Woods. ID'd by Eric Fisher. Mallophor...

Shield-Winged Insects: About Myself

http://shieldwinged.blogspot.com/p/jon.html

To Earth's most fascinating, diverse and overlooked creatures. Sierra Nevada, California. My name is Jon Quist. I am not an expert taxonomist, blogger, writer and most of all speller by any means, but I can feel myself moving in that direction every day. I love the outdoors, especially non-touristy places where I can go hike, swim, camp and bug collect without having to explain why I'm flipping rocks and peeling bark off of fallen trees. Guadalupe Nipomo Dunes, San Luis Obispo County, coastal California.

Shield-Winged Insects: September 2013

http://shieldwinged.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html

To Earth's most fascinating, diverse and overlooked creatures. Saturday, September 28, 2013. Awesome Beetles From an Awesome Sister. Over the past two or three years, as my passion and attention toward entomology has grown, my older Sister, Rebecca Quist, has been ever-so-kind to collect beetles for me on her own outdoor adventures. She studied field biology at Utah State, has spent a year in Randolph, Utah studying the nesting sights for Sage Grouse ( Centrocercus urophasianus. Utah, Rich County. An eas...

Shield-Winged Insects: June 2013

http://shieldwinged.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

To Earth's most fascinating, diverse and overlooked creatures. Thursday, June 27, 2013. First Ten-lined June Beetle of the Year. Truth is that the Cyclocephala is probably the more interesting and local scarab than this this pretty pest, but I have not yet identified the former so I will save those for a later post (They're usually the first and last active in the summer). Monday, June 24, 2013. Vicente Flat 2.) What Dwells on the Forest's Floor. An excellent habitat for unique California ground beetles.

Shield-Winged Insects: March 2013

http://shieldwinged.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

To Earth's most fascinating, diverse and overlooked creatures. Sunday, March 24, 2013. To the park and beyond. Last Sunday I had an awesome picnic with my Aunt, Uncle and Cousin at Cottonwood Park on the borders of Fresno. A couple years ago, this would be the same park that I spent many hours collecting at after school. It never disappointed, either! Going back this time with a camera in the early spring was a real treat too. Pacific Gopher Snake ( Pituophis catenifer catenifer. Sunday, March 17, 2013.
