I'm not certain whether these are birch or aspen, but there were huge stand of them at 9000 feet by Kolob Reservoir. I love the white and green contrast. This lake was at nearly 8500' and was in the shadow of Lassen Peak. This was taken at an small school looking over the town of Nogales. Who have though a desert would have such a huge thunderstorm rolling through. Located near Everglades NP, this swamp was home to hundreds of birds and alligators, not to mention beautiful, large Cypress trees. Taken in ...
Beetles

Here's another species in the family Oedemeridae, the false blister beetles. Here's another member of the family Buprestidae. This species is really common on Mount Diablo. Acmaeodera tubulus - Metallic Wood-Boring Beetle. Metallic Wood-Boring Beetles are some of the prettiest beetles you'll ever find. They range from a couple millimeters like this to being quite large in the tropical genera. I've been finding these on flowers a lot lately. I guess when it rains it pours! Amphiagrion abbreviatum - Western Red Damsel. This is a new genus for me. I don't know the range of this species other than the western US. I've only seen it once and that was in the Sierras so I don't know if a high elevation is also a characteristic of its habitat. Anax junius - Green Darners Mating. This is a mating pair of Green Darners and in my opinion is a great photo (it's hard to get them to sit still). Archilestes californica - California Spreadwing. Family Lestidae (Spread-winged Damselflies).

Agelena sp (Funnel-Web Spider). Not too much to say about these relatively common spiders other than to note the funnel-shaped webs they spin, hence the name "Funnel-Web". This monster of a Mygalomorph was found crossing a dirt road in Bay Area in California. Aranea gemma (Cat-faced Spider). This robust Orb-Weaver is from the genus Aranea. Argiope aurantia - Black-and-yellow Argiope. Nice shot of A. argiope on Swamp Milkweed. Argiope trifasciata - Banded Argiope. Cyclosa turbinata (Trashline Spider).

Cicindela formosa formosa - Big Sands Tiger Beetle. This is the nominate subspecies of Cicindela formosa. The red coloration is typical of this subspecies. Cicindela oregona (Oregon Tiger Beetle). Among the fastest moving land insects in the world, this large and often brightly colored subfamily of Ground Beetles are found in a wide variety of habitats.
