The Death of Hope, or Mary Berry’s Tarte Au Citron | lucyinthepubwithcider
https://lucyinthepubwithcider.wordpress.com/2016/09/21/the-death-of-hope-or-mary-berrys-tarte-au-citron
Books and bakes and beverages. The Death of Hope, or Mary Berry’s Tarte Au Citron. September 21, 2016. September 21, 2016. I was talking to a colleague the other day and he said he hated the idea of hope. It was always harking to the future, he said. It drew attention away from what was happening in the present, and set you up for perpetual disappointment. “I hope it doesn’t rain today” – so what if it rains? All of this is a long way of saying that Mary Berry’s Tarte Au Citron recipe. Is really very good.

Books and bakes and beverages. Twelve Favourites From My Bookshelf. March 2, 2017. I don’t know how you organise your books – some people do it by colour, alphabetically, by category… I organise my books much more according to emotion and the rules of chaos. Most specifically, I have a shelf, which is high up in my bedroom, and reserved for favourites. The books people are not allowed to borrow. Here is a handful of them –. You can not borrow any of these books. Emma Donoghue wrote the blockbuster. As my...
Trip to Thailand – Part 1, Khao Lak | lucyinthepubwithcider

Books and bakes and beverages. Trip to Thailand – Part 1, Khao Lak. November 20, 2016. I’ve just come back from my very delayed honeymoon! Did you miss me? Why do you mean, you didn’t notice I’d gone because I’m a wildly inconsistent blogger? Like almost everyone I know who got married this year, we did two weeks in Thailand as our honeymoon and it was so so blissful. Neither of us had ever been to South East Asia (or, actually, Asia) before and we were looking for a little bit of an adventure. In Khao L...

Books and bakes and beverages. Trip to Thailand – Part Two, Khao Sok National Park. November 23, 2016. After the joy of drinking and reading in Khao Lak. We headed to Khao Sok national park to stay in Elephant Hills. An adventure tour outfit who offer elephant experiences, jungle tours and luxury jungle accommodation. Diligently spotting stuff over breakfast. This elephant is obligingly getting muddy so we can wash her. I am feeding this elephant, and laughing because she is very snatchy. The next day we...

Books and bakes and beverages. Good Me Bad Me by Ali Land. January 12, 2017. January 12, 2017. With Good Me Bad Me. Ali Land has given us the perfect psychological thriller. And all this happens in just the first couple of chapters. The voice of the novel is extraordinary, capturing the conflict at the heart of Milly’s character – with a mother like hers, will she ever turn out to be good? Offering no easy answers, this is a perfect book club read – a novel that makes you want to argue about the ch...

Bristling Badger: Why Use Dead Children?
http://bristlingbadger.blogspot.com/2014/09/why-use-dead-children.html
Monday, September 22, 2014. Why Use Dead Children? The British police officer who used Rod Richardson's identity at a riot at the G8 summit in Genoa, July 2001. Beyond whether it's distasteful or dangerous for police to steal the identity of dead children. There is another question. Why would they do it? Police self-investigation Operation Herne. Looked at political secret police unit the Special Demonstration Squad (SDS) and reported that. Far from making a plausible, robust cover story, using dead chil...
Bristling Badger: Repealing Our Humanity
http://bristlingbadger.blogspot.com/2015/05/repealing-our-humanity.html
Sunday, May 10, 2015. Six months ago it would have been quite a funny joke - if the Tories get a majority they'll repeal the Human Rights Act and replace it with a bill of rights drawn up by Michael Gove. As axeman Education Secretary, Gove tore through at such a pace that by the time the opposition had mobilised his plans were all inked and in train. We can expect the same style in his new role as Justice Secretary. Already the Tories are making loud noises. It's part of being a member of the larger, ol...
Bristling Badger: Bringing Englishness to the English
http://bristlingbadger.blogspot.com/2015/05/bringing-englishness-to-english.html
Monday, May 11, 2015. Bringing Englishness to the English. I usually love Paul Mason's stuff, he's both radical and reasonable, credible enough to be given a job on Newsnight and, latterly, Channel 4 News. In the wake of the SNP's march on Westminster, he's written about the lack of an English identity. Billy Bragg picked him up on it. On Twitter and Mason replied. Northern, British and proletarian [rather] than English. It has no resonance for me. The three things Mason cites aren't English, they're cla...
Bristling Badger: It's Not Just Activists
http://bristlingbadger.blogspot.com/2015/04/its-not-just-activists.html
Sunday, April 26, 2015. It's Not Just Activists. In June 2008 a group of 29 climate activists stopped a coal train. Bound for Britain's biggest source of carbon emissions, Drax power station. They were all convicted. But it was a miscarriage of justice as evidence had been withheld from the defence - reports from one of the drivers, Mark Stone aka undercover police officer Mark Kennedy. The convictions were quashed last year. Quite how many other wrongful convictions are being left to stand - hundreds?
Bristling Badger: Sitting in the Spycops Priority Area
http://bristlingbadger.blogspot.com/2015/04/sitting-in-spycops-priority-area.html
Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Sitting in the Spycops Priority Area. Further to the last post. About police authorisation documents for Mark Kennedy's deployment for the Drax coal train action in 2008, there is a page in that sheaf by Anton Setchell, who was then the National Co-ordinator for Domestic Extremism (NCDE). This was the person with oversight of three political policing units - Kennedy's National Public Order Intelligence Unit, the corporate advisory National Extremism Tactical Co-ordination Unit.
Bristling Badger: May 2015

Monday, May 25, 2015. Equal Marriage is a Feminist Victory. For those of us who remember the power of the Catholic Church in Ireland before the last 20 years, the Yes vote for equal marriage. Can't be anything but astonishing. It's a reaction already to be found among young adults in England, where homosexuality was decriminalised a generation earlier. It was still criminal in Ireland until 1993, a mere 22 years before Friday's equal marriage vote. Complaints from the No campaign that they lost because Y...

Lucy in the Making
Lucy in the Making. This is a journal of my adventures with my hubby, on our quest to have a child. We hope this will be an inspiration and a helpful guide to other couples out there. Thursday, February 24, 2011. She's got 10 more teeth since 8 months ago, now walks and runs, and says 10 or so words already. All in all, it's been a wonderful ride, and we can't wait for what else parenthood has in store for us. Monday, July 26, 2010. We said yes on the spot! A week later, we were back at Norfil to pick up...

Lucy In The Pie. Tales from the kitchen. Thanks for all the support on the Facebook page; thank you for sharing posts, reading posts, and more importantly trying out some baking for yourselves. I hope I was able to help some of you enjoy baking and experimenting in your own kitchens. Who knows where this blog will go? Maybe I’ll just go back to casual baking and not blog about it again (I seriously doubt that). My take on coffee and walnut cake! It’s best to use a hand mixer or standing mixer for t...
