Sometimes I Write for Real. Friday, March 21, 2014. Still, this wasn’t enough; so Royal added to his workday the duties of a delivery boy for the James Shelmardine Hat Company—Esther sewing on the hat bands at night. Later, Royal worked as a cash boy and general helper at the palatial Auerbach’s Department Store. What change did Royal crave in 1890 at age 30? What made him consider leaving Salt Lake City—the only home he’d ever known? Elizabeth proclaimed that no place in Salt Lake City would feel like &...

Sometimes I Write for Real. Sunday, January 4, 2015. He was calm and still, just watching and observing a brown horse all alone in a big pasture. This surprised me. Ethan is scared of so many things—why wasn't the sight of this enormous horse walking toward him making him run for cover? But Ethan just watched. Calm and quiet. Connecting. Ew, horse spit. Hard at work for the horse. Ethan meticulously picked grass for over an hour. I thought about it for a minute. But then, snapped to. "No! With even your ...

Sometimes I Write for Real. Sunday, March 29, 2015. Me: "We found an Easter dress for Maddie at Costco.". My sister: "So did we. What does Maddie's dress look like? Me: "I kind of forgot. Pink with something.". My sister: "Huh. I wonder if it's the same dress? Adults would be mortified to show up to an event wearing the exact-same outfit. But 7-year-old girls? This isn't the first time this has unintentionally happened, either. It occurred at Easter 2011:. And again at Christmas 2011:. Do I have a story?

Sometimes I Write for Real. Tuesday, February 3, 2015. When 1970s Barbie Comes to Visit. Looking at my old Barbies makes me feel old. Twenty years have gone by since I last pulled out my Barbies and looked at them. I think I forgot what a time capsule they really are. The clothes styles, the modesty, the good natured-ness of Barbie back then. My daughter's Barbies are all mini-skirts, heavy make-up, spiked stilettos, and attitude. But my Barbie has painted-on underwear. Wanted her to be. Subscribe to: Po...

Sometimes I Write for Real. Saturday, May 16, 2015. The conversation at the lunch table turned to LDS missions. My friend with a 19-year-old daughter said, "I'm nervous for my daughter. Her mission papers are in, and she could go anywhere in the world. But she's never left Utah before. Well, if you don't count Idaho or Disneyland." And we all agreed that she couldn't. At first, I raised my eyebrows in a virtual gasp, "Never left Utah before? How is that possible? Kids were well traveled, but are they?

Sometimes I Write for Real. Tuesday, December 16, 2014. Pushing My Luck with Christmas Pictures. Because Ethan and I remember this event so vividly, I did not take my annual pictures by the tree this year:. And Ethan was grateful. But I do think it's fun to play around with Christmas tree light and my DSLR camera. I caught Ethan in a good mood on Sunday, and he was a bit willing to play along. Here are a few of our results:. Ethan put me under orders, "You get 5 pictures. That's IT! A Few of My Topics.
