Monday, 16 February 2015. Red-necked Grebe at Rutland. A great day out birding started at Sandy Smith with the Great Grey Shrike, then a nip up to Rutland Water for the Red-necked Grebe, We then went round to the Lapwing hide to find the Smew amongst a large quantity of Goldeneye, Tuftys, Pochard, Wigeon and Mallard. Saturday, 14 July 2012. More catch-up: Lesvos wildlife. Scarce Swallowtail - not very scarce! We couldn't resist taking some photos of these butterflies, dragonflies, reptiles etc. Saturday,...

Oh! By the way...........: March 2011

http://malcolmhawkes.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 8 March 2011. The North-east wind doth blow. On Saturday Gen and ourselves went to Lynford Arboretum to try to catch up with the elusive Hawfinch. Sadly we were not there when the single Hawfinch was sighted later in the day but we did get good views of Treecreeper, Nuthatch, Coal Tit and heard a Tawny Owl calling. While we watched the Snow Buntings, with a very chill wind in our faces, this Sanderling dropped by to see what was going on. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). There was an error in this ga...

Oh! By the way...........: Overdue catch-up - our Birds of Lesvos!

http://malcolmhawkes.blogspot.com/2012/07/overdue-catch-up-our-birds-of-lesvos.html

Saturday, 14 July 2012. Overdue catch-up - our Birds of Lesvos! That gives us a good reason to return. Hopefully before it is ruined by massive wind farms (see Steve Dudley's blog). Here are just a few of our photo's. Apart from the wonderful buntings we had sightings of most of the birds that Lesvos is so famous for, including Kruper's Nuthatch feeding young at the nest. Another treat was a very obliging Ruppell's Warbler. And last but not least. a very elegant Spur-winged Lapwing! View from the Cape.

Oh! By the way...........: Beds Birds

http://malcolmhawkes.blogspot.com/2012/04/beds-birds.html

Monday, 2 April 2012. Yesterday morning a quick visit to the Open Morning at DSTW gave us good views of a visiting Green Sandpiper and a Water Rail. The Water Rail was sensitive to noise from people on the site but made frequent forays into the open. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). There was an error in this gadget. All this because...: October 2011

http://allthisbecause.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

We don't remember the days. just the moments. Thursday, 27 October 2011. One Day Like This. And by the time we arrived, at around 7.30 am, birds were gathering in their thousands. Later, closer views of the birds were possible from hides overlooking the lagoons. Definitely a day to remember. Thursday, 13 October 2011. I spent 15th to 25th September back in Portugal , based again at the wonderful Lagoon Cottage, enjoying ten days of sunshine (temperatures often around 30. And this Plain Tiger at Vilamoura.

All this because...: March 2011

http://allthisbecause.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

We don't remember the days. just the moments. Wednesday, 30 March 2011. The Fellowship of the [Birding] Ring. Last weekend’s birding trip -. A long weekend in mid Wales with friends from the Bedford RSPB Local Group - included a couple of what I can only describe as ‘Tolkien’ moments. The Ravens in particular wouldn’t have looked out of place in any supernatural tale – dark forms against a background of knarled, misshapen branches…. The drama was non-stop and there was so much going on you hardly knew wh...

All this because...: August 2012

http://allthisbecause.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

We don't remember the days. just the moments. Thursday, 30 August 2012. This particular individual didn't look quite as 'glossy' as birds we've seen in Portugal but it was a juvenile, and the light wasn't good at all - I'm sure a little bit of sunshine would've made all the difference. Having said that, there were moments when we did catch a glimpse of that stunning iridescence. And anyway, it's always a great bird to see in the UK. Friday, 17 August 2012. 65279;Graylings at Snettisham and Minsmere (it's...

All this because...: Summer?

http://allthisbecause.blogspot.com/2012/08/summer.html

We don't remember the days. just the moments. Friday, 17 August 2012. I think most people would agree that generally Summer 2012 has been a wash out - and probably pretty disastrous for a lot of our wildlife. However, nature is nothing if not tenacious and on occasional days, and more frequently in the last few weeks, whenever we've had some reasonable weather, there have been birds and other creatures to see and appreciate. This Swallow was enjoying a sunny afternoon in late May at Cley. While we were a...

All this because...: August 2011

http://allthisbecause.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

We don't remember the days. just the moments. Tuesday, 16 August 2011. Summer can be a relatively quiet time for birding and indeed July was fairly unproductive for us, but things have picked up with the arrival of August. This may have been one of the last times they were in the nest because very soon after the photo was taken I watched them launch themselves into the big wide world. After lunch we went to Sizewell beach with the aim of finding some Little Gulls which had been reported there. They w...

We don't remember the days. just the moments. Thursday, 19 May 2011. Born in the USA. I hadn’t expected to go birding that day and so didn’t have my camera with me [wouldn’t you know it! All this because...: September 2011

http://allthisbecause.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

We don't remember the days. just the moments. Monday, 12 September 2011. A taste of things to come. Saturday was our last birding trip in the UK before flying out to Portugal next week for ten days. Not surprisingly, m. Ost of the talk as we travelled to RSPB Titchwell (hoping to see a Buff-breasted Sandpiper that had been there for some time) was about Portugal – the places we’d visit and the birds we might see. We don't remember the days. just the moments. Sunday, 15 April 2012. These Common Snipe were at Frampton Marsh a couple of weekends ago. At first all I could find were snoozing birds. Until this one came walking by. And here’s a little video clip of one using that incredible bill. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Why this title for my blog? Bad light fails to stop play!
