Mamelodi is situated on the north eastern outskirts of Pretoria and is a former black township with a population of about one million people. Many people live in small brick built houses but there are also huge informal settlements or squatter camps where people have built their own shacks made out of corrugated iron or plastic sheets. As more people move from the rural areas to the cities, these informal settlements are growing month by month.

Although schools do now receive some funding from the state, this is insufficient to provide an adequate education for children. The Mamelodi Trust raises money in the UK and makes grants to schools. We are supporting schools as they try to improve their provision. We are helping them to:. Raise pupils’ achievement and provide them with the skills necessary for employment in the new South Africa;. Purchase books and to create school libraries;. Buy new learning resources and other essential equipment;.

How do we operate? How do we operate? Is a UK Registered Charity. The principal aim of the Trust is to support the advancement of education in schools in Mamelodi and the Mamelodi Teachers' Centre. We want to make a real difference for children in an area of significant deprivation. The Trust raises funds in the UK to support education in Mamelodi. It normally makes grants direct to schools so that they can make their own decisions about spending priorities.

How you can help. We need funds to enable our work to continue and there are various ways in which you can help:. Make a one-off donation. Any donation, however small, makes a difference in schools where children have so little. One or two pounds, for example, will provide a much-needed book, or some gas to heat the midday meal.
