A Prairie in the Boreal Region. A Globally Significant Ecosystem. It has been said that every plant is a healing plant, which has been used as food or medicine everything taken was used. Rainy River First Nation Elders wish to preserve Kay-Nah-Chi-Wah-Nung’s heritage. Accordingly, Rainy River First Nations organizes a prescribed bum of the prairie each spring as soon as the snow melts. This fire renews growth of rare prairie plants and keeps invasive species away.

The Kay-Nah-Chi-Wah-Nung prairie is all that remains of a large oak prairie savannah that once stretched along the Rainy River before European habitation of the area. Until the 1800’s, mesic prairie vegetation grew everywhere, but it was cleared for agriculture, drastically reducing the available habitat for the area’s native vegetation and wildlife. The Long Sault Rapids on the Rainy River are a natural spawning ground for sturgeon and other species of freshwater fish. The sturgeon is perhaps the single most important factor in people gathering at Kay-Nah-Chi-Wah-Nung. A single sturgeon, which had potential to weigh over a hundred pounds and be over eighty year old, could feed many people. The 4000 gallon aquarium in the Visitors Centre features Lake Sturgeon, as well as other species of fish.
