Manly Musings: Tolerance is a Two Way Street
http://manlymusings.blogspot.com/2013/12/tolerance-is-two-way-street.html
Saturday, December 21, 2013. Tolerance is a Two Way Street. This past week Phil Robertson was suspended from his show "Duck Dynasty", which airs on A&E. Phil made some comments concerning homosexuality, which I found very blunt and far from eloquently phrased. But, honestly, isn't that what viewers love about the show? Many claim that God has made them a certain way. Even a popular Lady Gaga song professes “I was born this way! Did Phil belittle or attack an individual? What do you think would have happe...
Manly Musings: October 2010
http://manlymusings.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
Saturday, October 16, 2010. On Friday Reid and I hiked Mount Timpanogos. We left at sunrise (7:30 AM) and made it back to our car at sunset (7:30 PM). This was not an easy hike, the trail to the top is just under 7 1/2 miles with about a 4,500 foot elevation gain. Below I wanted to capture some memories from the trip, which I thought would be amusing for others to read as well. Reid did a great job on the hike. It wasn't easy by any means! Reid got a little scared near the top of the mountain. At the...
Manly Musings: Manly Campout
http://manlymusings.blogspot.com/2009/05/campout.html
Sunday, May 24, 2009. This past Friday our church held a campout for all fathers and sons. Reid, who is five, was really excited to go. It has been awhile since Reid has gone camping. When Reid was three we took him on a camping trip with some friends, but the heat, cracking, and popping of the campfire frightened him and we finally found him locked in the car and hiding- poor little guy! How times have changed! Nope, this is where dads excel! I don't know how many s’mores Reid ate, but if Guinness...
Manly Musings: Trans-Zion Trek Report
http://manlymusings.blogspot.com/2015/04/trans-zion-trek-report.html
Friday, April 10, 2015. Saturday, April 4:. We left home at 4:30 AM to try and obtain wilderness/camping permits to complete the Trans-Zion Trek. We arrived at the Kolob Canyon Visitor’s Center at 7:45 AM and were able to be first in line at 8 AM. We were able to obtain the permits for the following day. We then went to DI to get some warm clothe—I realized we were missing. I also bought the kids some Easter candy at Walmart, since it was going to be Easter on Sunday. Day 1 (Sunday, April 5):. I had an i...
Manly Musings: Give Me a Shake
http://manlymusings.blogspot.com/2011/12/give-me-shake.html
Sunday, December 11, 2011. Give Me a Shake. A couple months ago, Logan started walking. It has been fun chasing him around and watching him dismantle our home. But there have been cute moments as well. I've usually carried Logan into church and he'd watch as I'd shake hands with people before the start of meetings. A couple months ago, he snuck away from our pew, during the meeting, and walked up and down the aisle shaking hands with everyone. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

Perspicacious Words: Sage Z-Axis - Rest in Peace
http://perspicaciouswords.blogspot.com/2009/05/sage-z-axis-rest-in-peace.html
Saturday, May 23, 2009. Sage Z-Axis - Rest in Peace. Anyone who reads this blog realizes that I am an avid fly fisherman. And anyone who has followed the blog for very long probably remembers the rod build I documented. Last year. For those that do not, the links are on the front page of the blog. The rod was a Sage Z-Axis, 8 weight, 4 piece. I built it after returning from a Redfish trip in Savannah, Georgia. I looked down and the rod had snapped. About 11 inches of the tip section was lying in the ...

Perspicacious Words: Building a Fly Rod: Part 7 - Putting Finish on the Wraps
http://perspicaciouswords.blogspot.com/2008/05/building-fly-rod-part-7-putting-finish.html
Tuesday, May 13, 2008. Building a Fly Rod: Part 7 - Putting Finish on the Wraps. The rod is almost complete. The handle and guides are all on the blank. You are ready to take it out for a spin.almost. The next step is to put the finish on the rod. Remove any Tag Ends. Some of the wraps probably still have noticeable thread sticking out where you cut them with a razor. These should be removed before you put the finish on. If they are left they will be seen on the final rod. Setup to Apply Finish. You now ...

Perspicacious Words: Sage Z-Axis - Resurrection
http://perspicaciouswords.blogspot.com/2010/09/sage-z-axis-resurrection.html
Friday, September 17, 2010. Sage Z-Axis - Resurrection. Many may remember this post. From last year. The breaking of the Z-Axis. I recently realized that I had not posted when the rod was repaired. Yes, it has been repaired and is once again in my arsenal. Because I had a new tip section I transferred my guide spacing from the broken section over to the new blank. I wrapped the guides. And then put the finish on. After allowing the finish to setup the rod was ready to go. Enter your search terms. Part 7 ...

Perspicacious Words: Smallmouth on a 2 Weight
http://perspicaciouswords.blogspot.com/2010/09/smallmouth-on-2-weight.html
Saturday, September 11, 2010. Smallmouth on a 2 Weight. I have not made it out fishing as much as I would like this year. There are a lot of excuses, all bad ones. I did, however, make it out last week for a couple hours. I grabbed my 2 weight and went to the nearby stream to try to catch a few Smallmouth. As in the previous post. I was not expecting anything of size. And that is pretty much what I got. No Smallmouth, a few Sunfish, and a couple Rock Bass. Thanks for the comment on my blog. I have be...

Perspicacious Words: Building a Fly Rod: Part 5 - Selecting Thread and Starting the Guide Wrap
http://perspicaciouswords.blogspot.com/2008/05/building-fly-rod-part-5-selecting.html
Friday, May 9, 2008. Building a Fly Rod: Part 5 - Selecting Thread and Starting the Guide Wrap. The handle and reel seat are attached. The guide locations are marked. It is now time to attach the guides to the blank. This is done using thread. When all the guides are wrapped an epoxy finish is applied. I also like to use a metallic thread for accent wraps. The metallic threads maintain their colors without color preserver. Guide Taped in Place. Note the Tape Angle. Tape Strips to Mark Thread Wrap Start.

Perspicacious Words: Building a Fly Rod: Part 2 - Tools and Supplies
http://perspicaciouswords.blogspot.com/2008/05/building-fly-rod-part-2-tools-and.html
Friday, May 2, 2008. Building a Fly Rod: Part 2 - Tools and Supplies. You have now decided to build your own fly rod. You go to stores, look online, and ask a lot of questions. Just what do you need to buy anyhow? Do I need a powered rod wrapper with foot pedal? How about a drying rack with multiple motors? As if that was not enough, what about the components themselves? What blank should I buy? How about a reel seat? Tools Used. Not Shown – Tape Measure. I use an inexpensive thread tensioner that is bas...

Saturday, March 3, 2012. Today's Topic for Dicsussion. What a tourist terms a plague of insects, the fly fisher calls a great hatch. Patrick F. McManus. My fishing license expired after February 29. Perspicacious Words: Building a Fly Rod: Part 1 - Why?
http://perspicaciouswords.blogspot.com/2008/05/building-fly-rod.html
Thursday, May 1, 2008. Building a Fly Rod: Part 1 - Why? You have discovered the joy of fly fishing. As you begin to catch fish using this method the next step seems obvious – you want to learn how to tie your own flies. Many participants in this sport do just that. There is nothing quite like catching a fish on a fly rod using a creation of your own. What about the cost savings? I have found that by building my own rods I typically get more rod for the money, but when building a high end rod the parts a...
