Canon Fodder: October 2006
http://mapletree7.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html
Books I read but didn't blog this week. I can see why this became a cult classic in the sixties. It was like drinking a glass of cool water. This goes into the Catch-22. Category of desperately funny and sad at the same time. New verse, same as the first. Saturday, October 28, 2006. Links to this post. Reading Journal Entry: Diary of Lady Murasaki. Lady Murasaki is the author of one of the Great Books on my list. The Tale of Genji. I haven't gotten to the Tale of Genji. Personal reflections and observati...
Canon Fodder: May 2007
http://mapletree7.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html
A Series of Unfortunate Events. I love these books. I've almost finished the series - I just need to read the very last one and then I'll be done. I honestly think they are better than the Harry Potter books. I am lusting after this fantastic complete set. One of his earlier works, a fun eco-thriller. A chocolate bon-bon of a book. Not his best work, but good enough to eat. Vol 1 and 2. By Patricia Wrede and Caroline Stevermere. I love me a good epistolary fantasy novel set in Regency England! The Mind-B...
Canon Fodder: January 2007
http://mapletree7.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html
The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells. The War of the Worlds. By H G. Wells is one of the first science fiction books. Aliens from Mars invade suburban England riding scary tripod machines. The scariest thing about this book is that it was written in 1898, 16 years before World War I, yet it contains realistic depictions of the use of poison gas. What technology of today would be a good choice for bringing down invading aliens? And in twenty years it will seem run-of-the-mill. Saturday, January 27, 2007.
Canon Fodder: Let's do this thing
http://mapletree7.blogspot.com/2006/05/lets-do-this-thing.html
Let's do this thing. I have read none of the books on the recently released New York Times. List of the 'best works of American literature published in the last 25 years'. This makes me feel inadequate, so naturally I seek for alternative explanations that will place the blame squarely on the list, as opposed to on myself. After a little digging, I find one. Via The Elegant Variation. I found this mediabistro. Rant The New York Times. Are entirely old media. No bloggers! We have been snubbed! I suppose p...
Canon Fodder: The Prince, by Machiavelli
http://mapletree7.blogspot.com/2007/01/prince-by-machiavelli.html
The Prince, by Machiavelli. I first read The Prince. In high school, and I was tremendously disappointed. It's a small little thing and I was expecting the secrets of the ages. Or at least something that would help me deal with the cool kids who were making my life hell. No, I'm not Italian, although I speak it fluently. My parents moved there for work and sent us kids to the International School of Florence. Sounds nice, eh? Machiavelli lived in Florence and grew. After he died, his son Piero. And other...

Me | The Block House
https://theblockhouse.wordpress.com/about
Cinder blocks, cause they don't blow down. Idea #47 on how to fill out this page, because nothing seems right. It either seems too much or not enough. It seems egotistical or inauthentic. So for now, I’ll post a poem which I think speaks of ‘me’. Turn at Highway 258 truck stop, straight down. The gravel road to another Wal-Mart town. On that spot lived Queen Lula Mae, who wore. A crown of gray, lived in a 1957 Royal Mansion. Silver trailer, with a screened porch covered. Dirigible sightings, the Model-T.

The Silent Writers Collective. Shhh, it's time to write. Follow us on Twitter. Join our Facebook group. Positively Sharing Literary Link Love. A few long weeks ago, for the second time in as many years, my laptop brain fried, and I lost everything. If we can squeeze a third positive out of this (and I think we can), in getting my sweet new computer up and running, I decided it was time to clean out some of those bookmarks that haven’t been used since my 9th grade term paper on S.E. Hinton. A quarterly an...

In the Universe: October 2006
http://tessintheuniverse.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html
My random musings on life at the time. Comments or feedback always welcome. Sunday, October 22, 2006. Films blog (need to come up with some better titles). Well, I haven’t written a blog in a while simply because nothing interesting has happened to me recently, and I’d like to resist the tendency to fill these ego-driven virtual pages with mind-numbingly boring self-affirmations. Well, no risk of that with Ben, which is nice. I’ve also just finished watching Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (also downloa...

http://tessintheuniverse.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html
My random musings on life at the time. Comments or feedback always welcome. Sunday, November 26, 2006. Look what I made! And the baking continued yesterday, with this birthday cake for my friend Ellie. It's a white cake, with chocolatte icing and strawberries (inside too! It got devoured in about 2 seconds when it got to the party. Which was nice. It died fulfilling its purpose. Posted by Obroni at 9:40 AM. Wednesday, November 22, 2006. Three weeks she's come! Uhm, and this would be where I screw up to t...

Tess in Japan: August 2006
http://tessinjapan.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_archive.html
This is a travelogue that I wrote during my six months in Japan from April to September 2006. Wednesday, August 30, 2006. Should I take a picture? Not that I was hungering for blood and gore, but I thought there aught to be a better record of the event than this. Well, the second section of the museum was more than enough to make me forget I hand't had lunch. Tomorrow morning I head off to Aso, my southernmost Japan stop and last before South Korea. Posted by Obroni at 3:45 AM. Tuesday, August 29, 2006.

Canon Fodder
Don Juan, Canto I, by Lord Byron. I listened to an excellent reading of the first Canto of Byron's Don Juan. That I downloaded free from Librivox. Byron (a dissolute, corrupt, romantically brooding fellow) completed 16 cantos before his death, becoming more famous and more beloved of his publisher which each volume. A darkly brooding figure who debauched maidens and youths and obsessed about his half-sister. One of his lovers, Lady Caroline Lamb, called him 'mad, bad, and dangerous to know.'. Wikiepedia ...

The Maple Tree Adventure
The Maple Tree Adventure. Building our dream home in the NC mountains. It's almost mid August 2011 and the love of my life and I are getting ready to begin a year long adventure building our dream cabin in the mountains of North Carolina. We're actually in Oregon, as we speak (8/11/11) wrapping up a glorious 10 day vacation with my wife's sister and brother-in-law at their cabin in the mountains. Why the title "The Maple Tree Adventure"? 210 Maple Tree Lane. West Jefferson, NC 28694. No it's not my weddi...
