Mark McKeague | Colour Chasers

Colour Chasers are small robotic cars designed by Yuri Suzuki that make music from drawings. They can follow a black line and turn any colours which cross this line into music. I collaborated with Yuri to realise a new version of the Colour Chasers for an exhibition at MUDAM Luxembourg entitled 'Looks Like Music'. 5 new variations of the robots were created, each with a unique sound and shape. The Colour Chasers are part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art.

This project explores how technology could be used to enable children with Autistic Spectrum Conditions to play, explore and express their emotions and feelings. Touch*Play is a device that can record sound by pushing a button. The only way to playback the recorded sound is to touch another person, requiring cooperation and interaction with other people. Can the city become a symphony? Electric cars are increasingly using synthesised sounds in order to mimic the recognisable noise of the internal combustion engine. I explore an alternative in which the sound that the cars generate changes according to its relationship to other road users and the environment. Piccadilly Circus, Central London. Parliament Square, Westminster. Row Roundabout, East London. Vehicles group themselves in an ordered sequence depending on direction of travel.
