Mark Thompson: On Corbyn: What if the rules have changed?
http://markreckons.blogspot.com/2015/07/on-corbyn-what-if-rules-have-changed.html
Thoughts on politics and life from a liberal perspective. Wednesday, 29 July 2015. On Corbyn: What if the rules have changed? Like many seasoned Westminster watchers I have been somewhat amused by the recent travails of the Labour Party. Enough MPs "lent" Corbyn their nominations in the interests of having a wide debate and hence he also entered the contest. And that if he was to somehow manage to win he'd have absolutely no chance of becoming Prime Minister. But what if we're all wrong? The received wis...
Mark Thompson: Campaign in majoritarian, govern in coalition
http://markreckons.blogspot.com/2010/06/campaign-in-majoritarian-govern-in.html
Thoughts on politics and life from a liberal perspective. Wednesday, 23 June 2010. Campaign in majoritarian, govern in coalition. Something keeps happening regarding the political discourse in this country since the election. Both the Conservatives and the Lib Dems keep being accused of having "broken" their pledges. Also, those opposition politicians screaming "betrayal" at the Lib Dems should reflect on how unwilling their leadership was to engage in meaningful coalition talks and also how the electora...
Mark Thompson: The most amazing night of politics I will ever witness
http://markreckons.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-most-amazing-night-of-politics-i.html
Thoughts on politics and life from a liberal perspective. Tuesday, 12 May 2015. The most amazing night of politics I will ever witness. Warning this is a long one! So much stuff to talk about in the aftermath of the most fascinating election in my lifetime (I was born in July 1974). I'll try and group my thoughts under a number of headings. The Run-up to Election Night. As I had shared on Twitter in the couple of days running up to the election I had read a piece by Shaun Lawson on Our Kingdom. Published...
Mark Thompson: Why David Cameron may secretly want AV to pass
http://markreckons.blogspot.com/2011/03/why-david-cameron-may-secretly-want-av.html
Thoughts on politics and life from a liberal perspective. Sunday, 6 March 2011. Why David Cameron may secretly want AV to pass. The primary focus of the reporting of the Barnsley Central by-election result has been on the fact that the Lib Dems came sixth. This is bad news for the party and there is no point in Lib Dems claiming otherwise. So what is the solution? And with David Cameron's limited room for political manoeuvre on the right I suspect he may well now secretly want the AV referendum to pass.

Belinda Brooks-Gordon: Lib Dems Against Tuition Fees
http://belindabrooks-gordon.blogspot.com/2011/03/lib-dems-against-tuition-fees.html
Wednesday, March 9, 2011. Lib Dems Against Tuition Fees. A confession that Labour would have increased tuition fees significantly if it had won the 2010 General Election has emerged from a former Cabinet minister. The revelation from Peter Mandelson in the forward to the paperback edition of his book The Third Man: Life at the Heart of New Labour, comes as no surprise to Cambridge Lib Dem MP, Julian Huppert who voted against an increase. Julian added: “Lord Mandelson has made it quite clear that un...

Thoughts on politics and life from a liberal perspective. Tuesday, 30 January 2018. The leaked Brexit report won't have any political effect. So an internal government report has been leaked. That says whichever Brexit option the UK goes for there will be a detrimental effect on GDP. Depending on which form of Brexit we end up going for the range is from 2% of foregone GDP in 15 years up to as much as 8% of GDP in 15 years. Scary stuff. Well what I am going to do here is a bit rough and ready but in 2016...
