The Dad House: June 2008
http://thedadhouse.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html
Gardening among wildlife in Virginia. Sunday, June 29, 2008. A Week in Wildlife. Flower longhorn on the oregano which is always loaded with bumblebees. I counted 5 on a single flower. Devouring a beautiful, iridescent bee that had the misfortune to fall into our pond. The striders. Don't actually walk on water, but instead skate about on the water's film. Dragonfly by the pond. There have been several around dipping their bums in the water which I assume means their laying eggs. Friday, June 27, 2008.

The Dad House: May 2008
http://thedadhouse.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html
Gardening among wildlife in Virginia. Wednesday, May 28, 2008. Aren't three day weekends the best? The long weekend was a great time to get the last of the seeds (well, most of them) in the ground. Herbs and Companion Plants in the Kitchen Garden. Basil with the tomatoes and on the left side of the edible herbs garden. Calendula, gazania and 'Bright Lights' cosmos with the peppers. I realized later that I should have done the calendula much earlier or in the fall. A variety of sunflowers. Some much neede...

The Dad House: August 2007
http://thedadhouse.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html
Gardening among wildlife in Virginia. Monday, August 13, 2007. Not having yet found the perfect cobalt blue bird bath for my kitchen garden, I have nothing set up for them on a regular basis, but I could improvise! I took a plastic saucer, put a rock in the middle to stabilize it and filled it with water. The next day about ten birds were queuing up for a turn! If you haven't yet found the perfect bird bath for your garden consider at least putting something together. The birds are thirsty! Http:/ jimsul...

I couldn't take it anymore! I hadn't wanted rocks all the way around the pond. I thought draping plants would be a nicer accent and I'm sure they would have been. But in the meantime the black vinyl was just plain UGLY. There was also a. At first I t. Once the rock was laid, I climbed around applying cement while Mike hande...

The Dad House: October 2008
http://thedadhouse.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
Gardening among wildlife in Virginia. Wednesday, October 15, 2008. Here's to Doing Nothing! I move fast. My colleagues laugh, saying they can hear the "click, click, click" of my fast walk crossing the floor over their heads. I don't stop "doing" from the day's start to finish. But something happens to me in the garden. I slow down. Sometimes I just stand there, staring into space. I breathe deeply, I listen, I relax and sometimes I see things. Like this praying mantis I discovered in the nandina. This i...

Gardening among wildlife in Virginia. Monday, March 1, 2010. A loooong time ago, but I forgot to put a forward link here. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. This Fall (or when the humidity dries up). Brush in woods cut back again. Coreopsis in the front bed moved back from the sidewalk. Grass removed from the Kitchen Garden and replaced with newspaper and pine needles. Rose removed from patio trellis. Trees that are dead and sick in the yard cut down. So far these are safe.

Gardening among wildlife in Virginia. Sunday, March 30, 2008. Yep, I said Field Pussy Toes (Antennaria.). Notice the pretty, silvery spot on the ground in the picture to the left? We have them in a couple of places around our yard and in the Spring they send up little flowers. I discovered their name online last year, but haven't been able to learn m. As bad as thepicture below is, hopefully it will at least illustrate why they got their name. I promise, I'll get a new camera one day. Here's what I know:.

Gardening among wildlife in Virginia. Sunday, April 27, 2008. Elements of Garden Design by Joe Eck. Thursday, April 24, 2008. Sunday, April 20, 2008. The Results of a Week Off. I should have plenty to share in three years! Ready or not, the kitchen garden now has 3 asparagus beds! To share with friends next year! A colleague of mine once described some bamboo creeping into her yard from her neighbor's as penile. It seems an appropriate description of the newly planted asparagus too. It turns out Shoeless...
