Go to Sleep. Study. Mathinate. Author Archives: Sarah D. I’ve been meaning to blog, but after a long day at work, I usually don’t feel like organizing my thoughts. I don’t know how you all (#MTBoS) do it. Maybe this weekend, I’ll get around to posting my classroom pictures. Student 2: “My professor does the same thing. Sometimes I just want to check my answer.”. Naturally, I wondered about my own students’ dependence on calculators. I spend a lot of time with some of my 8th grade students ̵...I get t...

Go to Sleep. Study. Mathinate. I’ve struggled with how to deal with homework before. My first year, I worked kinda out of the book and kinda with whatever handouts I could find. However, the book is terrible, especially now that Virginia has adapted new SOL. So, in coming across this comment on Dan’s blog. I developed a template for homework. Go to Sleep. Study. Mathinate. Making the World a Better Place. A few weeks ago, before winter break, I went into my lunch buddy’s classroom and lamented how, even though teachers generally want to change the world and inspire our students to be good people, sometimes I feel that I’m just too late. Being a middle school teacher, my students have already experienced 12 or more years outside my influence and absorbed all sorts of prejudices. I don’t always feel hopeless about the future.

It’s not that I can’t do it, but I wish my professor would let us use a calculator. It would be so much faster.”. And I’m going to try out Numeracy Ninjas. This year, too.

Day 1- Review Adding and Subtracting Fractions Foldable. Review Multiplying and Dividing Fractions Foldable. Since these are powerpoint presentations, I just made the words right side up when presenting to the kids. That way they could see exactly where to write the notes on their own foldable. Here is an example of one of my students notes:.

Learning Math is Messy. Teaching Middle School Math. SBAC Testing Craziness →. I know this is a blog about my experiences teaching math but I had a birthday party for my thirteen year old and I just wanted to share what I did in case anyone else wants to do a similar party. First of all, I scoured the web for ideas. Everything I did was not an original thought but an adaptation from someone else’s wonderful idea. I had my 13 year old make them himself which saved me some time and he had fun doing it.
Mrs. Hester's Classroom : MIA

May 18, 2014. Sorry that I've been MIA for a few weeks now! Lots and lots going on. I'll wrap up my First PBL. Series soon with my student presentation information and a reflection on the entire process. There were definitely some things that I loved and some things that I didn't. It's always about trying new things and a growth mindset, right? Since the last time I posted, my Algebra 1 kiddos have finished their End of Course testing. So glad that big, looming test is out of the way! Also more good news!

Growing Mathematical Minds: Mission #2...How I "met" Fawn Nguyen
http://growingmathematicalminds.blogspot.com/2013/10/explore-mtbos-mission-2-twitter-me-this.html
Saturday, 19 October 2013. Mission #2.How I "met" Fawn Nguyen. A while back I thought twitter was just for movie stars and famous (or not so famous) people who have too much time on their hands. I mean, who really wants to know what some random person ate for lunch that day? This week's mission was to go outside of my comfort zone and become a little more active on twitter. One of the first things I did was to introduce myself to Fawn Nguyen,. Who is just amazingly inspiring! 19 October 2013 at 13:39.

Sometimes magic just happens. 8221; He made one up, wrote it right on the SmartBoard, and the students all tried it. I even got to sit back and be the student for a little while. After the first student made one up all the rest of the students took turns making up problems until the late bus was called. I think they finally understand the concept. My Dynamic Maths Class.

Teaching middle school math. October 31, 2013. One Solution, No Solutions, Infinite Solutions. Today we solved special case equations that had one solution, no solutions, or infinite solutions. I found Sarah’s Solving Special Case Equations. Which was awesome. I used her worksheet. Then we did her amazing foldable, but I did type it up so the kids could just fill in what I needed them to. Here it is: foldable. After that, I modified a MAP Lesson Solving Linear Equations in One Variable. November 15, 2013...

Monday, 12 December 2016. The Meaning of the 2015 PISA Canadian Math Results. For the past few years various news media have repeatedly conveyed the belief that:. The mathematical abilities of Albertan and Canadian students have declined significantly. This decline was caused by the introduction of a new curriculum. Evidence is provided by the results of the PISA tests. That sentiment is what this post is about, but let me start with this question. Definitely a top notch school. For comparison, here are ...
