the [dirt] road less traveled: November 2011

http://www.mattfranc.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

The [dirt] road less traveled. Thursday, November 3, 2011. I just wanna live my life! Alright so before i begin trying to articulate the inarticulatable (hows that for an english teacher making up a word! Well, in the spirit of sustainability, i decided to hand over the reigns (ie, hair clippers) to one of the learners so that i could "supervise" and by that i mean hang out with one of my fellow teachers- and someone who just might be the female Namibian version of ME! Good morning class, how are you?

The [dirt] road less traveled. Wednesday, February 13, 2013. And then time passed. And as each day did, things began to change. A lot. Quicker than anything has at any point of my life. Perhaps the reason I haven't been the most avid blogger is obvious. How do you blog about home? About your normal life? But then I realized that that doesn't make this any less blog worthy. Step in the circle if…. As my loyal followers already know (though this number may have dwindled down to merely my mother) we have a ...

The [dirt] road less traveled. Wednesday, July 4, 2012. Boy with a coin. But what caused for such an anecdote before i even get to the crux of this post? So with that as a preface, let me recount some of the highlights over the past month. just keep in mind that when a goat walks into the staffroom, like one just did, i consider that a normal nuisance so what you and I find interesting may not be quite the same. but you can humor me, right? What not to do in an american school. Or "we'll just end up slee...

The [dirt] road less traveled. Friday, October 7, 2011. So im reading you shall know your own velocity! By dave eggers and came across the following line: "travel was a distraction for the unimaginative." it was a timely moment to read the line- i had just experienced my first day of site visit and i sat on the edge of my bed (without sheets i might add, but who's asking? And reflected upon what was the most unimaginable place i could, well, imagine- Ndiyona, Namibia! I was the last! My overarching goal ...

A Namibian Adventure: June 2013

http://nowlininnamibia.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Friday, June 28, 2013. See that curving mud/dirt road? That's what Lesotho's roads look like -. A bit of an adventure to drive on! Finally made some time to write about this! Apparently the building on the Lesotho side was washed away at some point… that might have been made up by the tour guide, but it’s totally possible – I think it’s relatively rare for there not to be a customs/immigration post to stamp you into a country! Bumpy almost the entire time we were in the car. A perfect way to end the day!

A Namibian Adventure: November 2012

http://nowlininnamibia.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Tuesday, November 6, 2012. Big things have been happening in Nam this past week! People had been talking here and there about strikes but I definitely did not think anything would come of it. Well guess who was wrong? Last Tuesday during our staff meeting I saw a very. Teachers launch nationwide strike. Teachers threaten to defy interdict. PS fingers crossed that if the negotiations go according to schedule and finish Wednesday that we should be back to teaching on Thursday! Friday, November 2, 2012.

A Namibian Adventure: May 2013

http://nowlininnamibia.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 29, 2013. The Grade 7s led the other girls in the dancing. On Friday it was the 50. Anniversary of the OAU – Organization of African Unity. After break we had a small program to celebrate as a school. I was so excited because I finally had another chance to film some traditional Owambo dances! I filmed a fair amount of things last year from the cultural groups, but I was extremely far away/my camera was half-broken so the quality wasn’t good enough, but now I have redeemed myself!

A Namibian Adventure: Camping Weekend!

http://nowlininnamibia.blogspot.com/2013/09/camping-weekend.html

Saturday, September 28, 2013. 20 Girls crammed into the back of a closed bakkie. normal! At the end of July we had a crazy weekend of camping outside of Luderitz, and it was awesome! We started our weekend with the GUTS Girls Group, camping at Stormvogels Bucht, which is a deserted [like everything down here] bay on the way out to Diaz Point. It used to be an old whaling station! 65279;. S'mores and Glow Sticks! Then, as we started with the s'mores, a trio of jackals came close to our campfire!

A Namibian Adventure: Luderitz is No More :(

http://nowlininnamibia.blogspot.com/2013/08/luderitz-is-no-more.html

Friday, August 16, 2013. Luderitz is No More :(. Last week, in the stress of getting 50 girls organized to go on our girls group camping trip, I was informed that I don't live in Luderitz anymore. Immediately I had to drop what I was doing and see what was going on, and while I understand the reasoning, I'm actually pretty saddened by what has happened! One of oh-so-many signs that will need to be changed. If you want to read more about the town's reaction to this change: Buchters In Revolt. And Then We ...

A Namibian Adventure: The Hiking Chronicles

Wednesday, September 11, 2013. As I struggle with putting into words how unbelievable it is that my last day of work is next Friday, and as I have not yet written about my final holiday here, I'll post something that I wrote a while back after my COS conference! This is going to be a CRAZY long post, apologies in advance! The following is a summary of my two years in African transport…. After this experience, I came to several conclusions, one of which was deciding never to travel in an open bakkie again.

A Namibian Adventure: Crazy for Crayfish!

http://nowlininnamibia.blogspot.com/2013/06/crazy-for-crayfish.html

Friday, June 14, 2013. DPS learners who participated in opening ceremonies. They're called drummies. Look at those fancy outfits! Turns out, these games they were hosting were actually pretty big. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised – when given an opportunity to miss work for a week to go watch people play soccer/netball/other assorted sports, what person working at a town council would say no? I am obsessed with this sign. All things seafood in there, so delicious! It was so interesting to hear about her ...
