BOSS Homebrew Awards, Flossmoor ProAm & Stout!

http://mattmegbrew.blogspot.com/2011/04/boss-homebrew-awards-flossmoor-proam.html

Matt and Megs Beer Brewing Adventures. Monday, April 25, 2011. BOSS Homebrew Awards, Flossmoor ProAm and Stout! First off, I'd like to extend a big "huzzah! To our brewing brothers and sisters at BOSS. Anyhoo, we took home three awards from that comp:. 3rd place for an American Pale Ale. 1st place for English Barleywine. 1st place for American Stout. But due to some unexpectedness on the brewday and some needed improvising/tweaks - turned out more malty than expected. Recipe: Stupid American Stout. IBU (...

Matt and Megs Beer Brewing Adventures. Thursday, June 2, 2011. Cheese and Beer Dinner - CCBW 2011. Whew - we survived another American Craft Beer Week. The Illinois Craft Brewer's Guild. Always puts together a week full of great events right here in Chicago. We were asked to attend this dinner by the good folks at the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board. How can you resist Wisconsin cheese paired with brews from one of our favorite breweries? For more info.). And anything Carr Valley. With the Centennial IPA.

We Took the BJCP Exam

http://mattmegbrew.blogspot.com/2011/05/we-took-bjcp-exam.html

Matt and Megs Beer Brewing Adventures. Monday, May 16, 2011. We Took the BJCP Exam. So last Saturday we headed down to Plant Chicago. To take the Beer Judge Certification. Test We'd been part of a study group, which met around once a month since last December. The study class, led by National Judge/chemist Steve McKenna and organized by our homebrew club, HOPS! Was key. In the class you don't just just learn about beer styles, ingredients, processes, etc. - but you learn how. This is the last year the te...

Matt and Megs Beer Brewing Adventures. Wednesday, July 21, 2010. On Cleaning the Boil Pot. Last Monday I had the wonderful opportunity to help brew a batch of beer at the Goose Island Brewpub. Here in Chicago. This was to be a collaboration brew between Goose Island and the Chicago Beer Society. The beer is a recipe by Randy Mosher for a spiced Belgian Wit called Partial Eclipse. And scrubbing while holding onto a flashlight in the other hand (very dark in there! Just How Clean Should My Kettle Be? I pos...

Ted's Homebrew Journal: Copper Lager 4

http://www.tedbrews.com/2010/02/copper-lager-4.html

Tuesday, February 9, 2010. It's time for yet another favorite of mine, an annual tradition of sorts. The Copper Lager is a beer that originated by using up all old ingredients from earlier in the year. In its 4th incarnation, the recipe has changed, but critical elements remain.color, IBU's, ABV, and yeast choice. Hopping is kept pretty much the same. In the first recipe. 15 lbs. Franco-Belges Pils. 20 lbs. Ger. Munich. 125 lbs. UK Crystal 25L. 15 lbs. Belgian Wheat. 25 lbs. Special B. Sacch Rest Temp/Ti...

Thursday, May 28, 2009. Fermentation Friday - 5/09 - Brewday Joy and Stress. A year ago, Adam at Beer Bits 2. Launched what's called " Fermentation Friday. On the last Friday of every month, a nice round-up of homebrewing bloggers write their story on a common theme. It's been very interesting reading everyone's brewing perspectives. I've been wanting to write about brewing beer in terms of being a science. And an art form. But, I think that's a better topic for my own writings in the future. So before, ...

Sunday, July 19, 2009. Xtra Dark Belgian Abyss. I've been wanting to create a opaque Belgian ale for quite some time. I'd like eventually make something that has the smoothness of an oatmeal stout, with some roasted malt edge, but also carries a lot of depth found in many Belgian Dubbels. This beer is based off of various Dubbel recipes, but has a slightly stronger alcohol point, and a tiny addition of chocolate malt. Xtra Dark Belgian Abyss. 11 lbs. Ger. Pilsener Malt. 30 lbs. Ger. Wednesday, February 10, 2010. Small Beer - Biscuit. Once again, hops are simply added for bitterness. The OG came in one point under target at 1.034, so 25 IBU's will give it a solid clean bitter balance. Small Beer - Biscuit. 975 lbs. Golden Promise 2-Row. 100 lbs. Belg. Biscuit. 100 lbs. Belg. Cara 8. 040 lbs. Fawcett Crystal 25L. 25 oz Willamette T-90, 4.8%, pellet, 60min. Wyeast 1056: American Ale 1.5qt decanted starter. Strike: 1.25tsp Gypsum, 1.2g Epsom, .75 tsp Acid Blend. Sunday, June 28, 2009. T-90 Chinook Pale Ale. A lively little hop in deed. A special pack T-90. Chinook pellets from Hop Union found its way into my home as a special gift from my friends at Half Acre. Sample hops are sometimes put in with orders. Since they couldn't use them for any beers they make, Tommy still wanted to know what a beer would be like with these being the showcase. So I finally brewed a strong pale ale. Friday, May 21, 2010. Been Away For a While. For those who have been following my brewing journal, you may have noticed an absence from my contributions for a while. I've still been brewing a lot, but finding time this year to sit and write has been replaced with more personal and family time. Picking up more shifts, vacations, and community has also filled the schedule book. Having good friends over to brew has been fun this year, brewing outside a few times, and being quite cold too. Ted's Homebrew Journal: January 2010

http://www.tedbrews.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 12, 2010. Using Chicago's frigid Winters as a perfect ambiance for brewing lagers, I look forward to the season to get in several batches. Looking back to last years small beers, I thought I'd try making a small lager. A session lager that's low in alcohol, light in color, but very flavorful and crisp. I was thinking about hopping with only one bittering addition, but since I'm going for more of a pils taste than helles, a bright finishing hop might be a nice refreshing nuance. Pre-Boil ...

http://www.tedbrews.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 25, 2009. 2009 has been a wonderful year of trying out various low alcohol session beers, or what I like to call "table" beer. The Wayward IIPA. Provided the opportunity to run a true parti-gyle technique. The Small Beer. From that was so clean, mild and perfectly brewed. It was so good, I brewed a huge 13 gallon batch, most of which got drunk in record time at a good friend's wedding. Much like the first parti-gyle. 1625 lbs. Maris Otter. 100 lbs. Brown. 100 lbs. http://www.tedbrews.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Friday, October 9, 2009. Steel Cut Oatmeal Stout. An ale I've sortof been longing to brew for some time now. Trying one years ago, I felt it didn't have nearly the mouthfeel that creates a lover of the style. Mouthfeel/Body is a quality in a solid beer that's probably as important as it's distinctive flavors/aromas. While writing this post, I'm tasting the "straight" version of my latest Hop Blend IPA 2. Some beers in the past have not had enough roast, and then some had too much. I'm hoping what Mos...

I will start with June. This year I was so blessed to be able to homeschool Myles. He just completed Kindergarten! He did amazing and I am so proud of him and all he has accomplished. He receives ABA therapy four times a week and it can sometimes be pretty intense around here but he has grown leaps and bounds. I am really excited for next year :). We made an awesome Summer To Do List as this will probably be our last summer in the DC area. Lots of fun planned. 2 years 10 months 16 days. Life is so busy.
