http://thomasguild.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Monday, 27 July 2015. Medieval clothing from Vienna part I. These three photos made by Andreas Praefcke (wikimedia commons) give an overview of the enormous painting of the family tree. The female wears a intricate necklace and a belt-type reminiscent of the male knightly belt of the late fourteenth century. The man wears a beautifully embroidered gown. Some of the men have married twice. The females have some open armwork, showing the underlying dress. The female on the right has a pointed hennin. The j...

St. Thomas guild - medieval woodworking, furniture and other crafts: October 2014
http://thomasguild.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 28 October 2014. The medieval toolchest: the plane (part 3). This post continues from the previous post. Planes without a toat. 8224; 1571) on folio 45r of the Landauer Zwolfbruderstiftung in Nuremberg, Germany. He is working with a plane with a toat, while a large try plane can be seen next to the window. Also remarkable is that this plane already had a grooved wedge; This is likely a necessity as a cross-pin held wedge would have weakened the plane to much. In France, a complete plane (except ...

Tuesday, 30 December 2014. New cookbooks and an old with a new recipe. During Saint Nicholas and Christmas time I have received and bought some new (at least for me) medieval cookbooks. These were:. The Book of Sent Sovi. Containing the recipes of a 14th century cookbook from Catalonia (Spain) (ISBN 978-185566164-6). Luckily for us, the Catalan language is translated into English, but the actual transition to modern cooking has to be done by ourselves. From the beginning of the 14th century as 'Romania'&...
St. Thomas guild - medieval woodworking, furniture and other crafts: Medieval clothing from Vienna part 2
http://thomasguild.blogspot.com/2015/08/medieval-clothing-from-vienna-part-2.html
Wednesday, 12 August 2015. Medieval clothing from Vienna part 2. Continuing the story of the medieval clothing in Vienna, the next 'museum' to visit was the Stephansdom. This cathedral has some special rooms containing the treasury. Of the church, for a large part paintings of the 14th century. While most of the saints wear old-fashioned gowns, some images show the 'normal' close fitting 14th century dress. The blessed Virgin with Jesus and a pea flower. Westphalian, end of the 14th century. The next sev...

Tuesday, 25 November 2014. The faldistorium in the MAK in Vienna. The faldistorium from the Stift Admont dating from the early 13th century in the Museum fur Angewandte Kunst. The glass cage has been 'shopped' away. Nowadays you can only see the front and sides of the folding chair. The chair is painted in red, green, white, yellow-gold and black colours. In the basement, to a long row of chairs; the only being one locked in a plexiglas cage and behind a laser-guided alarm. However, this time photogr...

Medievalist in the Making. Professional turned PhD Student. August 8, 2015. August 8, 2015. The Last Epic Library Trip. In two weeks, the school year will begin. For the second year, I am amazed by how quickly the summer, which always appears to stretch out endlessly when classes end in May, slips by. There’s no question that this was a very good summer in a number of ways. I criticize myself for taking vacation … Continue reading The Last Epic Library Trip. August 4, 2015. August 4, 2015. In A Sentence .org. The best little site that helps you understand word usage with examples. Medievalists in a sentence. Every academic field has its own issues, but one that I like to harp on for medievalists is that we are held responsible for knowing all there is to know about a millennium of literature (or, in your case, history) stretched over a continent. Besides, everywhere Ive been, the medievalists are the most fun people in the program followed at a distance by the early modernists. Besides, ev...
