I finally finished preparing the frame and got it. Rubbed down ready for painting. I left it over with a friend and hopefully he'll get it done in the next week or two. M80 Bultaco Sherpa Restoration. Blog about the restoration of a 1971 Bultaco Sherpa model 80 trials bike. Wednesday, 13 August 2014. 27 - Making Some Nuts. A quick one today. I got a piece of 21mm AF stainless steel hex bar and made a couple of new nuts. One for the centre of the clutch and one for the front wheel spindle. One of the old ones had been tightened up with a hammer and chisel by the looks of it. I've got plenty of bar left so might make a few more if anyone needs one. Monday, 11 August 2014.

M80 Bultaco Sherpa Restoration: December 2014

M80 Bultaco Sherpa Restoration. Blog about the restoration of a 1971 Bultaco Sherpa model 80 trials bike. Tuesday, 30 December 2014. 34 - Fork repair. Back when I stripped and rebuilt the forks one of them was sticking a bit at the bottom of its travel. If you pushed the stanchion up and down the fork leg it felt like it was binding a bit. A tug would release it but it didn't feel like the other side, which was sliding nicely. So I reassembled it again, put the rubber boot over the fork and left it aside.

M80 Bultaco Sherpa Restoration. Blog about the restoration of a 1971 Bultaco Sherpa model 80 trials bike. Thursday, 26 February 2015. 35 - Getting Started Again. Things have been slow over the winter. It is just too cold to feel like going out to do any work in the shed, but now I have the frame back and want to make some progress again. I've left in some parts for chrome and zinc plating, and the rear shoes for re-lining so I hope to get them back next week then get the wheels into the frame.

M80 Bultaco Sherpa Restoration. Blog about the restoration of a 1971 Bultaco Sherpa model 80 trials bike. Tuesday, 31 March 2015. 38 - finishing the brake. After a comment from Michael I thought I could remember there once was a big rubber seal which sat in the circular groove beside the brake shoes. I guess the idea was to make a seal to prevent water and dirt entering, but how well it worked was debatable. I would think that unless a lick of grease was kept on it, it would soon wear flat. I decided ins...

M80 Bultaco Sherpa Restoration. Blog about the restoration of a 1971 Bultaco Sherpa model 80 trials bike. Friday, 23 May 2014. 21 - Thoughts on bearing choice. On the rare occasion I changed the gearbox oil I noted that it was a little dirty. It was as if mucky water was getting in somehow. I was giving this some thought and looking at the drawings in the Bultaco books. All of the bearings I took out of this engine were of the plain open type and this I think is where the problem lies. For the crankshaft...

M80 Bultaco Sherpa Restoration. Blog about the restoration of a 1971 Bultaco Sherpa model 80 trials bike. Monday, 31 March 2014. 9 - More Twists. Today I spent a couple of hours outside with the frames. I ground and sanded away the old welding from around the sumpguard. It looked tidy but it revealed another crack. That's two cracks now. I also cut the head off the bolt that was holding the brake pedal on. It will be replaced with a proper pin. Sunday, 30 March 2014. 8 - The Swing Arm. So the swing arm d...

After forming the curve on the top of the guard I marked it out then cut and filed it to shape. It needed a dimple at the front to allow for the head of a screw, so I made a press tool from a couple of bits of scrap bar. It worked out pretty well. 12 July 2015 at 08:34. Very, very neat.
