Disclaimer: The contents of this blog do not represent the views of the Peace Corps, solely that of the author. Tuesday, September 1, 2009. Journal: August 27, 2009. I feel as if I've been making a lot of goals lately, in preparation for leaving Mali. Yesterday, for example, I cooked zamen, or riz au gras, successfully for the first time in Mali, all by myself, without burning or undercooking the rice, which has been my problem in the past (rice here seems to cook faster for some reason). Now I only have...

Disclaimer: The contents of this blog do not represent the views of the Peace Corps, solely that of the author. Tuesday, June 9, 2009. So, it’s been a while (again) since I wrote in here. Sorry, can’t think of any other way to begin this entry. My instincts tell me I should think of some catchy phrase to get your interest, but my brain is not cooperating. How did you like Color of Water? I read it years ago- a great story. Also, was Audacity of Hope as good as Dreams from my Father? Eat, Pray, Love, by E...

Disclaimer: The contents of this blog do not represent the views of the Peace Corps, solely that of the author. Tuesday, May 6, 2008. Journal: Monday, April 21 2008. It rained all last night. It was the amazing: the first real rain in many months. It rained once in March, the first time since October, but that was really just a small rain. When I got home, I took my camera and went for a walk. I met my friend Mama Wedragu at her house. She lamented the fact that so many mangoes had fallen unripe&...Event...

Friday, March 12, 2010. Journee Internationale De La Femme 2010. We celebrated here in Koutiala. I had my outfit made and was looking forward to the day. The night before I went by Koro’s for a visit. She had a head ache and said she was not going to participate in the next day’s festivities. I was so disappointed. The next morning started with my usual bike ride. When I got home I left the house with the top of my IWD outfit and a skirt on my way to the market down the street. I sat with Fanta Diallo my...

Sunday, October 3, 2010. People Ask “Why did you join the Peace Corps.”. Years ago as I was filling out the Peace Corps application all I knew was that I had always wanted to join the Peace Corps, beyond that I couldn’t express why. Never did make it through that application process. Two years ago at age 58 I did finish the application process and receive my invitation to serve in the Peace Corps I still couldn’t answer the question “Why.”. Today I think I can. The Peace Corps was guaranteed to do that.

Saturday, October 31, 2009. Two bogolan artists and I just came back from a training in Segou, a town 159 kilometers north of Koutiala. As I reflect on the training one of the first activities I did with Koro and Awa comes to mind. The activity was the first time I introduced product development and as it turns out was a good introduction to the Segou training. In this introduction Koro, Awa and I went to the computer place, googled bogolan and looked at products made from bogolan clothe. The Segou train...

Meg in Italy! | follow my travels in Italy
Follow my travels in Italy. Amsterdam was a lot of fun! Once again, it was nice to stay with a family and Anne and her family was so nice! We did a lot of biking there, which I loved. It’s made me want to bike more at home. I’ll probably bike to and from work a lot. Kim, Brittany and I did the Heineken Experience/Museum on Sunday afternoon. That was by far the best museum I have been to over here! I’m now back on the train to Brussels. Metz was a lot of fun! Maybe we’ll start a trend! Now we’re headed ba...

My Life in Micronesia
My Life in Micronesia. Monday, April 23, 2012. Friday, March 23, 2012. Whatever stereotype you have of me drinking coconuts in the islands is probably true. Coconut meat is another delightful gift of the coconut tree. Personally, I like my coconuts young. When they're older the water gets fizzy tasting and the meat is too hard. When they're young, the meat is almost gelatinous and can be slurped out of the nut; it's delicious. Wednesday, March 21, 2012. To Kill A Mockingbird. The lessons are timeless, it...

Montreal is for…. One girl's journey to finish a sentence. You Stay Classy, Montreal. Posted by Meg Rafferty. April 7, 2013. So I leave Montreal this week. Like, permanently. And I have mixed feelings about it. There were times when I was homesick for pizza and American Netflix and thought this day would literally never come, times when I would have given anything to be able to say that I could count on my fingers the amount of … Continue reading →.
