metro farming: Tomato Report

http://metrofarming.blogspot.com/2010/08/tomato-report.html

Sunday, August 8, 2010. I have not heard a single complaint from a Mid-Atlantic tomato gardener this season. Excellent Spring conditions followed up by a hot dry summer have resulted in near perfect conditions for growing tomatoes. I had a small case of Blossom End Rot. Show up on my early Schimmeig Creg fruits, but that seemed to correct itself with some fertilizer applications. No sign of the dreaded Late Blight. Posted by Christopher Paquette. At the Bee Farm: May 2010

http://chicagohoneycoop.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, May 22, 2010. Every year around this time we start to get emails from people who have a swarm of honey bees in their yard or on their fence or in a tree. In the past they may have just called an exterminator. Now, because of the publicity about Colony Collapse Disorder, they want to avoid killing the bees and just want to find them a new home. Admittedly, a swarm of flying bees is pretty scary looking but you could stand in the middle of one as I have and not get stung unless you started swatti...

Sunday, February 6, 2011. Essential Equipment for Starting a Beehive Part One. Hives with all medium boxes. Top cover is raised for extra ventilation. This is the time of year when beekeepers order new equipment and supplies for the coming beekeeping season. If you are just starting beekeeping this year the numbers and variety of equipment available can get pretty confusing. So here is a list of basics and why you will need them. Hive boxes (also called supers):. Top Cover and Inner Cover:. We are an urb...

At the Bee Farm: Live Bees Rush!

http://chicagohoneycoop.blogspot.com/2011/05/live-bees-rush.html

Thursday, May 19, 2011. 5 Queens delivered from Southern Illinois today. Priority small flat rate boxes are perfect for this. The black cap on the end of the queen cage holds sugar candy for the bees to eat. The Queen is on the right. She is marked with a white dot and shipped with four attendants who take care of her during the trip. The dot will make it a little easier to find her inside the hive. Live bees attract attention. Monday, December 5, 2011. Goodbye to Fillmore Apiary. In 2004 when we started our co-op, we had no idea how long we might be allowed to keep bees on the property along West Fillmore St in Chicago, perhaps 2 or 3 years at best. It has been our great pleasure to have had an apiary and community farm there for 8 full years. When we started, we couldn’t have have imagined what a rich experience it would be. At the Bee Farm: August 2010

http://chicagohoneycoop.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 8, 2010. The Queen is Dead, Long Live the Queen. Courtesy of University of Illinois Extension. Every beekeeper runs into a testy hive once in awhile. Bees can get defensive for a lot of reasons. Most often, it is the beekeepers fault, dropping something, bumping the hive, moving too quickly, disturbing a frame of bees. In a case like this, the queen has passed down a trait of excessive defensiveness to her young and since all the bees in the hive have hatched from her eggs, they all are de...

A share will cost $48.00 and can be used at either the 2 farmers markets we will be selling at this year. In addition CSA members will be able to choose from other products from the bee farm that we usually don't sell at the markets and will get discounted admission to events and tours we have at the apiary. So, here we go! Hope to see you all at market! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Metro Farming Escapades

Monday, September 6, 2010. Well, like it or not the weather is moving into cooler temps again. That means its time to start thinking about the winter. Fall is also the time to be saving seeds- specifically mustard and beans seeds are ready to be collected or are close to it. Add to all this that our 3 hens are laying quite steadily (65 eggs in August) we're in pretty good shape for the upcoming months! Tuesday, August 17, 2010. This book is inspiring and challenging in all the right ways! Sandor spends a...
