Fearless Gardening: October 2013
http://fearlessgardening.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Leaping into horticulture boots first. Saturday, October 12, 2013. The Last Roses of Autumn. We're closing in on mid-October and the last rose blossoms are fading. The heavy morning dew is gilding their elegant buds in a wash of silver, a last breath to preserve their loveliness. I can see the clarion call of winter as the last petals cling like forgotten handkerchiefs. So I encourage you to meander through the world of shrub roses. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Labels: last roses of the year.

Fearless Gardening: July 2014

Leaping into horticulture boots first. Sunday, July 6, 2014. Going Native or How Rain Gardens Change Your Life. First, an apology. One of the consequences of being in horticulture is the tendency for spring to be all-consuming. So, I'm sorry that this little blog has been an unwitting victim of the annual onslaught. Second, an announcement! This little cutie pie, Talinum calycinum. Is native to rocky bluffs. It's going in between the flagstone stepping stones and will get a pea gravel mulch. Above Most o...

Fearless Gardening: August 2013
http://fearlessgardening.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Leaping into horticulture boots first. Wednesday, August 28, 2013. O, Beautiful Tomato! They are bright yellow and tacky as hell, but I don't care. I can move them around easily for maximum sun and water convenience. I also dumped in a solid handful of slow release fertilizer in each bucket. These babies soon overwhelmed my flimsy tomato cages. Next year, maybe I can talk the husband into recreating the Best Tomato Cage Ever based on the barbed wire man traps of WWI. What? Labels: chipmunks got a few too.

Fearless Gardening: Saving My Sanity with the Help of Flowers
http://fearlessgardening.blogspot.com/2014/03/saving-my-sanity-with-help-of-flowers.html
Leaping into horticulture boots first. Thursday, March 6, 2014. Saving My Sanity with the Help of Flowers. Life's been pretty busy, so unfortunately, I haven't been able to chronicle the slow upward spiral of late winter into spring. Oh, wait. Winter is still here. Along with a healthy heaping of snow and ice. I am on strike from shoveling. I'm obsessively watching the buds on the trees and bushes expand by microscopic increments. Spring really is coming. Honest! Come here, beautiful. This year, I potted...

Fearless Gardening: March 2013
http://fearlessgardening.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Leaping into horticulture boots first. Sunday, March 17, 2013. At this point in March I often feel like this:. Weighted. Winter feels heavy and I feel like I'm sinking. I know spring is around the corner. I can hear it in the birdsong and see it in the swelling buds on the rose bushes. But temperatures haven't risen above 40 degrees in a long time and I'm beginning to forget what sunlight looks like. What to do? Go to the beach. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Fearless Gardening: April 2013
http://fearlessgardening.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Leaping into horticulture boots first. Thursday, April 25, 2013. After the Flood: Stormwater Management in Action. Last year, our village finished building a stormwater basin a block away. They tore down four houses and dug out a huge area, planting it with native plants. I got to see the plans and the plant list, and we are still excited about it. Already, we've noticed more birds. I haven't heard frogs yet, but I'm hoping. Now it's a lake. Now it's a pond. You can see that bench in the center. Botany p...

Leaping into horticulture boots first. Monday, March 24, 2014. Helloooo, cutie pie! We all know how rough a winter it's been in Chicago. I still have piles of icy snow stubbornly refusing to melt along the driveway. However, there are signs and signals that spring is indeed upon us. I've spotted little nubbins of green as the snow recedes among a metric ton of rabbit poop. Well, at least it's fertilizer. Labels: crocus cutie pies. It is too spring. Thursday, March 6, 2014. Fearless Gardening: February 2013
http://fearlessgardening.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html
Leaping into horticulture boots first. Sunday, February 10, 2013. Winter is for Planting Trees. I think long and hard about what trees I plant in my yard. I don't have nearly enough space for everything I want to grow. I regularly threaten that if the neighbors ever move, I'm buying the house next door, tearing it down and planting more trees. Growing trees just for the heck of it. You didnt start the lettuce yet? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Winter is for Planting Trees. Its ok ...
