http://brandonmath.blogspot.com/2012/03/subbing.html
Friday, March 9, 2012. I'm currently subbing for my friend and computer teacher Mr. Armstrong so thought I'd take the time to do a little blogging with the students! The introduction of the Common Core standards in Mathematics (2014) promises to be a great thing for teaching (and coaching too! Only a year left! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Teaching and Coaching: Perceived Difficulty vs. Actual Difficulty
http://brandonmath.blogspot.com/2011/10/perceived-difficulty-vs-actual.html
Friday, October 28, 2011. Perceived Difficulty vs. Actual Difficulty. In teaching as well as coaching, the main part of our job entails helping students achieve goals. These could be goals we gave them, goals they set for themselves, or goals that no one even intended to achieve. When I give a test in class, I often will have given them a 'practice test' beforehand - an ungraded/collected by me summary of the types of questions I will give on the real test. You don't pay money to slack off, right?

Teaching and Coaching: Correlation between reading and math
http://brandonmath.blogspot.com/2012/03/correlation-between-reading-and-math.html
Thursday, March 29, 2012. Correlation between reading and math. In 2004, there was a .932 correlation between reading and math scores on the California CST (blog.mrmeyer.com). As Mr. Meyer and others have pointed out, we are thus double penalizing our students for not knowing the language of mathematics. Early in my math teaching career, I was exposed to the work of Miki Murray ( http:/ www.heinemann.com/products/E00634.aspx. Repetition. Teaching and Coaching: March 2009
http://brandonmath.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
Saturday, March 28, 2009. A poverty of expectations - countered. A friend made on facebook came by to watch our swim meet the other day. He's a really cool guy and also grew up with a fellow McLane teacher and friend of mine (rhea). It would be an understatement to say a defeatist attitude pervades many of our students. I don't want to be a complainer any more (in just a minute). I don't want to enable my kids and make excuses for them or for myself. I just want to get in there and treat them the...When ...

Teaching and Coaching: December 2008
http://brandonmath.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, December 9, 2008. I'm sitting at a basketball game blogging just like a real blogger. Things right now are pretty darn good. a few weeks until Christmas break which is three weeks long, and I'm really looking forward to it. After a great 3 mile sprint workout yesterday and an easy 2 mile run today with the kids to stretch things out, I decided it was time for new running shoes. So I got some nice new Nike's the same Air Structure ones I've had. just new! I'm starting to relax a bit. This wee...

Teaching and Coaching: January 2009
http://brandonmath.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, January 20, 2009. Following my review of Gran Torino last week (and also posted with some edits on Facebook) some people agreed and some didn't, but it's all good. Still a great movie in my opinion. I hope you all liked it if you saw it, even if it didn't live up to my hype! This semester out at Fresno State again for Turning Points Academy, I'm going to try something new. Due to lots of schedule changes and various other events this past week and a half, I've only taught two days! Days, 1, 3:.

Teaching and Coaching: The Big Picture
http://brandonmath.blogspot.com/2011/12/big-picture.html
Thursday, December 15, 2011. Since it started in 2007 with a few kids, the goal of giving all kids the multisport lifestyle is getting closer! Now at a middle school and a dedicated donor and volunteer base, Tri-This is poised to reach even more kids directly in 2012 than ever before. To that end, we went more facebook-friendly this year and update a google calendar at fresnomtb.org and tri-this.org. It's going to be a great year, thanks for an amazing 2011!
