The whole is the false.". Podcast Intro to Walter Benjamin's "Theses on the Concept of History". Here's a podcast I made a few months ago. It's an effort to introduce Walter Benjamin to high school students. I'm not sure that it succeeds in that respect, but I really enjoyed the process of putting it together. The soundtrack is all original compositions, minus a few pieces lifted form Satie, Berlioz and various Soviet orchestras. Walter Benjamin's Theses on the Concept of History.

Compendium Tremendium: A Short History of History - Part I

The whole is the false.". A Short History of History - Part I. I've been working on a short of history of history. It's an ambitious project, but a delight to research. Not sure what form it will take in the end, but I'm first writing it as a sort of narrative. Here's the Epics through Positivism. Pre-history and the rest to follow later. A Short History of History - Part I. Among the Romans, history realized its full didactic and rhetorical potential. The Roman "art of history" (. The City of God. Histo...

Compendium Tremendium: Roger Federer as Embodied Perception
http://compendiumtremendium.blogspot.com/2011/05/roger-federer-as-embodied-perception.html
The whole is the false.". Roger Federer as Embodied Perception. In his 2006 article, "Federer as Religious Experience," David Foster Wallace makes a compelling observation regarding the embodied nature of perception:. This point does require some qualification. According to another proposition with which we're all familiar, it should be conceded that perception is also a function of context. Consider Federer's comments on being a spectator at Wimbledon:. How do we enact our world? Knowing that perception...

Compendium Tremendium: The Other Side of Time

The whole is the false.". The Other Side of Time. To be clear, I'm not encouraging a radical break with the past. But, I appreciate seeing the temptation laid bare in all of its metaphysical seductiveness. By giving voice to the desire, I feel like Celine relieves some of the anxiety that builds from its inscrutable force . I guess, in a sense, this is a typical romantic trope: using poetry to transform pain into a sublime aesthetic of self-reflection . But Celine's black humor keeps the reader from.

Compendium Tremendium: On Time and History

The whole is the false.". On Time and History. Some variations on the theme of time and history that accumulated over a long period of only reading Benjamin and Adorno. On Time and History. The present does not advance or retreat; it stands still, obstinate, refusing to budge. And unlike the gaze we throw upon it, it reflects nothing, reveals nothing. The present is like matter: thoughtless, inert. But we are desire, restless before it. People, we are provided perpetual consolation. Do we accumulate hist...

The whole is the false.". I was at the Parkway 14 watching 2012 when an amusing thought entered my mind: what if the world were to come to an end this very moment, as I sit here in this theatre watching the same spectacular events unfold on the big screen? I smiled to myself as I pictured a shifting of tectonic plates tearing apart the floor beneath my feet, uprooting the foundations of the building, making a mirror image of the devastation on the screen. The global impact of these traumas is assured by ...
