Momentary Joy

Monday, March 19, 2018. For Tolkien fans, a gathering of Ents. Despite the snowy forecast, today is the final day of winter. Spring arrives tomorrow at 12:15 pm I hope it packed a parka. The approach of a new season reminds me to pay attention: The world around me is about to change, and it’s a good idea to take time to appreciate the way it is, here and now. Trees are a fine place to start. I’ve been looking to the treetops lately, appreciating their leafless silhouettes. See you next winter. The snow a...

Momentary Joy

http://momentaryjoy.blogspot.com/2014/12/one-of-my-favorite-non-tree-ornaments.html

Wednesday, December 24, 2014. One of my favorite non-tree ornaments. Each year as I pull out the ornaments for our Christmas tree,. I smile when I come upon a yellowed receipt from the old Hechinger hardware store. The fading numbers tell a story that has become a Kress family legend, a tale of persistence, wisdom and one amazing deal. It was Dec. 21, 1998, and the sun had long since set. (I know this because the receipt reads: 12/21/1998 19:35:53.). Ah, yes. That does sound like a plan. The good news wa...

Momentary Joy: February 2014

http://momentaryjoy.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, February 26, 2014. The symbol of winter 2013-14. A friend reminded me recently of something I wrote a couple years back:. That I appreciate cold winters because I like to earn my spring. I take it back. After weeks of shoveling snow and chopping ice, followed by more weeks of shoveling snow and chopping ice, we have more than earned our spring. I confess even the dusting we got today made my teeth clench. Fortunately the universe came through, and I’ll share a few hopeful moments.

Momentary Joy: September 2014

http://momentaryjoy.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, September 11, 2014. Long time, no write. I've got lots of ideas, and have all intentions of getting them down on the page. For now, though, I'll reach into my "archives" and share a piece published years ago. This was in the pre-blog era, when words appeared on actual paper. What a concept.). I was talking today with a mom whose youngest child has just started preschool. Our conversation took me (way) back to my days as a young mother, and the wistfulness that September can bring. Watching the ...

Momentary Joy: May 2014

http://momentaryjoy.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, May 29, 2014. A bird with color sense. Now and then my brain makes me laugh. By pulling the wrong word out of the drawer. I once told my husband I found his missing sock “in between the two hamsters”. In the laundry room. (In case you’re wondering, we keep no rodents there.). Sometimes my brain creates its own words, and I say them anyway. My favorite concoction: “shalt and pekker sapers.” You know, what everyone keeps a pair of in their kitchen. 8220;Oh look, a flamingo! It pays to look up .

Momentary Joy

http://momentaryjoy.blogspot.com/2014/11/it-helps-when-you-can-make-yourself.html

Wednesday, November 19, 2014. It helps when you can make yourself laugh:. I stayed up late last night after hosting my book group. This morning I met a dear friend for breakfast (just had to have those pumpkin pancakes again before the recipe gets filed away until next October). We were talking about possible dates for a gathering of friends. My mind began to meander off, thinking about offering to host, wondering if we had enough chairs to go around. Then I heard these words fall out of my mouth:. Cathy...

Once Upon a Time...: Her Royal Spyness (Royal Spyness Mystery, 1) by Rhys Bowen

http://readingincanada.blogspot.com/2011/05/her-royal-spyness-royal-spyness-mystery.html

Tuesday, May 31, 2011. Her Royal Spyness (Royal Spyness Mystery, 1) by Rhys Bowen. Would I read this author again:. I've already placed the second book in the series on hold. 1st in a Series. My ridiculously long name is Lady Victoria Georgiana Charlotte Eugenie. Thirty-fourth in line for the throne, I am, as they say, flat broke. When my brother, Binky, cut off my meager allowance, I bolted from Scotland - and my engagement to Fishface (I mean, Prince Siegfried) - for London, where I have:. Another case...

Turn on, tune in, drop out!

Turn on, tune in, drop out! Saturday, November 16, 2013. New and crisp, only. Burma never came up in too many conversations during my childhood. There was merely gossip of a sixty-year old cousin twice removed eloping with a hideous Burmese woman and spending the remainder of his life peddling bike spark plugs in Rangoon. It was an enterprising dream – traveling to an unknown land and trading in the comfort of a South Delhi. Sipping tea and staring at his mound of unsold bike spark plugs. Pitch, tone, fr...
