Monroe City Rocks!: Springs

http://www.monroecityrocks.blogspot.com/p/springs.html

The Karst formations which underpin Monroe City create many springs. The lower Spring at Johnson's. The spring behind Craig's house. H.G. Baum built a concrete block dam and "spring house" 30 feet downstream. They stored their. Products inside it to keep them cool. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Monroe City Rocks Home. Monroe City Rocks!: Caves

http://www.monroecityrocks.blogspot.com/p/caves.html

We know of several caves on the farm. These caves are really large, vertical rooms or chambers just below the surface. The most notable is the one underneath KK Road on the Monroe City Hill. The "bump" in the road betrays its location. Below is a 1982 article from the Waterloo Republican that tells the story. It is interesting to note that the hillside above these caves is pock marked with similar, but smaller openings. There could easily be more caves underneath. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Monroe City Rocks!: Fred and Wilma Johnson Basement

http://www.monroecityrocks.blogspot.com/p/fred-and-wilma-johnson-basement.html

Fred and Wilma Johnson Basement. This rock arched celler is another outstanding example of fine craftsmanship. With its wide rock staircase, elaborate updraft vents, and iron hooks, it appears to have been built by the same mason as the Gary Baum cellar. What was Baum doing in the woods so far from home, late at night? Was there perhaps a midnight rendezvous with someone else? We will never know for sure, but the legend and eyewitness testimony are as follows. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Fred and Wilma J...

Monroe City Rocks!: Harold R. & Rosalie C. Baum Home

http://www.monroecityrocks.blogspot.com/p/harold-r-rosalie-c-baum-home.html

Harold R. and Rosalie C. Baum Home. Built in the 1790’s , this house was home to the early millers of Monroe City. It contains outstanding examples of rock fireplace work. The home was also occupied in the 1830’s by William H. Bissell who would go on to become the 11th Governor of Illinois. From 1933 through 1937, Harold G. operated a woodworking shop in a shed on this farm. His signature item was the HUCKABAY and BAUM brand baseball bats. The main fireplace features a seven foot hearth opening.

Monroe City Rocks!: The Mill

http://www.monroecityrocks.blogspot.com/p/the-mill.html

The steam boilers required constant attention. One day late in the 1880’s or early 1890's, the operator went to the tavern for a quick beer. While he was out, pressure built quickly to dangerous levels. The boiler exploded, effectively ending the mill business in Monroe City. The mill building fell into disrepair. The rock was salvaged throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s. The rock wheel arch is all that remains of the mill. The Mill Spring dam, since 1827. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Monroe City Rocks Home.
