More than a Pile of Rocks. This entry was posted on October 15, 2013 by Kit. It isn’t just a pile of rocks. Inside are rooms where people slept, ate, gave birth, lived out their lives a long ago time. On some walls are messages carved in the stone; or paintings, filling in the details of what it was like thousands of years ago. 8220;One day we found thousands of shark teeth. It must have been an inland sea that dried up.” Carole tells us, her eyes lit up. El Malpais is where the lava broke through, there...

Thoughts from a Long Hike | Chinchilla and Pyrite

Thoughts from a Long Hike. This entry was posted on November 4, 2013 by Kit. Things learned or reminded of from this long-hike:. Start: walk a lot. When you get to the end: stop. If you are a woman, learn to pee standing up. It saves time. If you do pee standing up, try to learn how to do it so as you don’t pee on yourself. If you do pee on yourself hope you can find a partner who will tolerate you. Long-distance hiking is about walking a lot of miles to get from one place to another. Kit, please tell me...

Big Agnes UL 2 (this tent has a design flaw that other thru’s we talked to encountered. The angle of the zipper causes a lot of tension, and ours started to break, and we traded this in for the UL3 person which was like a condo and weighed about 1 lb more.). Custom synthetic sleeping quilt (Jacob designed and made a 2 person quilt that worked perfect for the trip.). Cell Phone w/ solar charger. First Need Water purifier. Mermot Precip Rain Jacket. REI ultralight rain pants. Northface GTX-XCR trail runners.

Plant a Prickly Pear | Chinchilla and Pyrite
https://thehungryhoneymoon.wordpress.com/2013/10/25/plant-a-prickly-pear
Plant a Prickly Pear. This entry was posted on October 25, 2013 by Kit. How to plant a Prickly Pear:. Step 1: Eat the red, seedy fruit. Step 2: Hike a while to digest the good stuff and let the seeds pass through. Step 3: Dig a cathole. Step 4: Do yo business. The Chihuahuan Desert is desolate but nice this time if year. The temperatures hang around 70 F during the day and today a breeze is blowing. What grass there is has gone to seed and can be stabby little buggers. But it’s just doi...You are comment...

Mountain Shadows | Chinchilla and Pyrite

This entry was posted on September 27, 2013 by Kit. In the shadow of a mountain snow hides. In some areas there were icy patches, and I fell on my butt more than once. “Aren’t you the one from Minnesota? 8221; Jacob teased me. I guess I forgot about snow and ice. Our feet got soaked and the wind continued to blow throughout the day but the sky was clear and a deep blue. Deer hopped lightly on their hooves. Jacob took two hops, trying to bound like the deer and said,. 8220;This is love.” Jacob s...We ate,...

Snow there, Anniversary here, and Walkingstick Cholla…New Mexico! This entry was posted on October 4, 2013 by Kit. Just south of Wolf Creek Pass after a September snow storm. Cholla near Ghost Ranch, New Mexico. It was a welcome change. The day we ran into Steve, October 2nd, also happened to be our three year anniversary. We celebrated on trail, as we usually do out here-we walked a lot and ate a lot and talked a lot. It was the best way to celebrate. October 4, 2013 at 2:48 pm. Enter your comment here.

Oh Snow! | Chinchilla and Pyrite
https://thehungryhoneymoon.wordpress.com/2013/09/22/oh-snow
This entry was posted on September 22, 2013 by Jacob. As most of the country knows, Colorado is wet. It’s been wet for a lot of our hike. The day leading into and out of Lake City were amazing weather. Best we’ve seen in weeks anyway. But there’s always a catch, and it was a one day weather pattern that was supposed to hit today. It was supposed to be snow and “probable” thunder. We hoped for the best and headed out. Then the sun came out and warmed us. That was nice. Sigh Mountains don’t care. The trail...

After a Flood | Chinchilla and Pyrite
https://thehungryhoneymoon.wordpress.com/2013/10/22/after-a-flood
This entry was posted on October 22, 2013 by Kit. After a flood debris wraps around standing trees, 30 feet off the ground. Animals leave tracks through flood plains. Four foot diameter trees sprawl out in a canyon. There is a section in the Gila between Snow Lake and the fork that takes you to the West Fork of the Gila, it’s notorious for the number of crossings, we heard between 70 and 85 over 21 miles. We crossed 111 times. It’s just under a week to go and not so many miles to Mexico. You are commenti...
