Organizing my thoughts and writing up a storm as I pass my 9-5 hours in front of the computer
Miriam's Musings: July 2007
http://musingmiriam.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html
Organizing my thoughts and writing up a storm as I pass my 9-5 hours in front of the computer. Sunday, July 8, 2007. At 3 AM the other night, I was restless but strangely motivated. I hopped out of bed, ready to apply for new jobs, read the news and write new posts for my blog. My unexpected insomnia left me with extra time, no distractions and plenty of jittery energy. Unfortunately, once I settled myself at my desk, I hit a major roadblock. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

Organizing my thoughts and writing up a storm as I pass my 9-5 hours in front of the computer. Sunday, May 6, 2007. I love those observations-on-life columns. The ones in the Leisure or Style sections of newspapers, the My Voice articles in women’s magazines, the fluffier essays in Time – I love them all. I like the sarcasm, the written validation of thoughts I’ve often had but never said, and best of all, the come-full-circle ending paragraphs. 8221;, the second is “Do you like it? Organizing my thoughts and writing up a storm as I pass my 9-5 hours in front of the computer. Sunday, April 1, 2007. Since no one has yet figured out how to skip straight to the second job, I’ll add my own two cents to the first-job advice clichés. For all you overachievers out there, here’s how to survive that entry-level position. Every time you pass through the kitchen, you can meet someone new. Lunch is the easiest time to talk to your senior coworkers. “What did you bring today? Did you cook it?

Monday, January 21, 2008. Warning: this is a looooong one. I thought about breaking it up into sections, but most of the “sections” are more connected than I thought… so, 2 pages on Israel, 2 on Peace Corps, 2 in response to a NYTimes article about Peace Corps and 2 are the article. Enjoy! So, I went; with two friends from here! But really, that’s the last time I was a full-fledged tourist there. I remember then the awe of the Old City, the first time I saw the “mud” at the bottom o...While I was there I...

Wednesday, October 17, 2007. The little shriek of joy as i ride my bike past some little kid who yells out "ba muzungu! It makes me smile and cringe. that i can be labeled so easily seems to contradict my universal american sensibilities. and yet, it's true. and her excitement at my passing can't help but make me want to be nice to her. do i challenge her stereotypes or do i just exist in her world of friendly white people? Does it really matter? Friday, October 12, 2007. First, happy birthday dad! On th...

Tuesday, December 11, 2007. I was in the peace corps landcruiser the other day and there was luggage in front and 3 people behind me on the seat. this isn't that unusual as the seat is supposed to fit four people. what was unusual is that before i looked behind me and consciously saw the 3 other people i sat there thinking "gosh, i have so much space here today! Will i eventually go back to thinking that my house is small? Will i ever think that spending 1 MILLION zambian kwacha on the GMAT makes sense?

Friday, June 20, 2008. First, i'm in capetown! With my mom and sister. it's beautiful and lovely and friendly and clean and i ate sushi for dinner the first night! Third, things have been going well - i think i've been struggling, as always, with what sustainability means in my role here. how do i set up systems that might, possibly, if people want last? How do i encourage people who have never been told to take risks in school to try to take risks in facilitation or youth skills work? Hannah's attempt t...

Tuesday, February 26, 2008. I realized after a recent letter from my aunt that people have a lot of questions about what i'm doing here. but it's hard for me to know what those are and what to answer in these blogs. send me comments and i'll answer your questions! Sunshine, after a month of rain almost every day, is wonderful. in the last two weeks we've had a couple full days of sun and the breeze and the sun and my bike as i ride down trails make me just think "i'm in africa! And give him some food?

Friday, March 07, 2008. Safety first, arrive alive. I've just arrived in lusaka on the night bus (thank you juldan bus company for arriving safely! Watching the sun rise! Part of that thought made me think about these repeated thoughts i have about being in africa - "i'm on a bush path in africa! Or "i'm watching an african sunrise! Or smiling at the beautiful "african" patterns on the women's chitenges (skirts/shirts/colorful material). is it just some kind of neo-colonialist romanticism? Ok, have to go...
Hannah's Zambia Adventures: Dealing with Frustrations
http://hannahlantos.blogspot.com/2008/07/dealing-with-frustrations.html
Monday, July 28, 2008. Having my family here in general (both mom and em, and tess and dad a couple months ago) gave me a new sense of joy and an ability to look at some of the things that I’ve gotten frustrated at with a kind of new, more patient eye. Oh, it’s just ZAMBIA! Crowded, late, the driver’s rude…. Is it me or is it her? What am I doing wrong in how I explain the situation? Does she just not WANT it enough to make herself understand? 8221; I joked “how much DO they cost? That this just isn̵...

Musings to Mirror the Soul. October 20, 2013. If they want to tackle health issues like obesity, why not put a tax on video games like Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox? Instead of children playing outside and burning calories, they sit in front of a screen for hours on end; the only parts of their body performing any exercise are their thumbs. Do they get charged higher premiums? Haven’t governments learned that so called sin taxes those on things like alcohol and cigarettes just don’t work? Governments te...

The art form I so love and learn from. Wednesday, January 11, 2012. Tango lesson: Using less words, more videos. I have been wanting to write about this beautiful movie for a long time. But words have failed me. So I thought may be I could do a video review with saying as little as possible. I want you to see this movie and enjoy the visuals and the romance as much as I did. Wisdom in an airtight jar. Relationships in modern day India. Movie Review “After Lucia”: Screened as a part of “Renaissance of Mexican film and soft power”. After Lucia is an intense emotional story that will suck you into its world like quicksand from the very first scene. Its a film that touches upon several themes like coping with the loss of a loved one, dealing with grief, bullying in high school, gender inequality and how society treats its vulnerable. And the USC Latino Student Assembly. 8220;A d...

Secondly, the joker outfit is a little too close to being a clown for my comfort level. Maybe it's just me, but isn't this a strange picture to send someone on a BDSM site? Haven't...
