HIKING MISS MARGARET. AND MISS MARY. – MyMtns
https://mymtns.net/2015/06/09/hiking-miss-margaret-and-miss-mary
Random Ruminations From Where I Stand. June 9, 2015. HIKING MISS MARGARET. AND MISS MARY. One of Margaret’s dearest and long-standing friends, Mary Walker, came over from Nashville this week–her first full week of post retirement–to celebrate. And for me to fill her in on how to do retirement right. A Two Bus Line to the Potty. We only saw four people on the way in and another four on the way out. The tour buses don’t make it to where we were. And most of the touristas never see what we saw...Email (Addr...

Random Ruminations From Where I Stand. March 9, 2015. Where the River Flows…. Little streams and rivulets that normally aren’t there, but now they are plunging down the sheer rock and snaking through the hollows, eager to make their contribution to the river’s flow. As I enjoyed all this, my mind went to a consideration of how the river’s flow is dependent on the tributaries and how all the individual streams come together to make a bigger, grander thing. Random Ruminations From Where I Stand. December 8, 2014. An Ebenezer I Didn’t Know I Had. 8220;Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen and named it Ebenezer, saying “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”–. It wasn’t an altar that Samuel erected with a stone he named Ebenezer. Rather it was a monument to the moment. An acknowledgement that he was “safe thus far.” A time of recognition and thanksgiving.,. So, yes, Elise and Ryan, I guess you can say that stone outcrop on Lumber Ridge Trail ...

Random Ruminations From Where I Stand. April 22, 2015. Sometimes It’s the Littlest Things…. A week or so ago, I found myself recovering from a stomach bug which had waylaid me and kept me off the trails for about a week. It was one of those gray days, tucked in the middle of a week’s worth of Spring rain…as Johnny Cash put it so aptly, “hadn’t seen the sunshine since I don’t know when.”. Jack in the Pulpit. Then an amazing thing happened. I put my boot back on and began to walk. The hurting has s...And o...
September 2014 – MyMtns

Random Ruminations From Where I Stand. September 21, 2014. More than a T-Shirt…. At the beginning…. At LeConte Lodge, they sell a T-shirt with a new design every year with the current year included in the design. The catch is, this particularly shirt is only sold on site–6593 feet and at least 10 miles of rocky elevation gain away from the windshield, drive-by tourists. You have to hike it to get it. It was a busy day up top. Probably 75 to 100 people milling through while we sat in the rockers and r...

Hiking to the Heights: Morning Meander up Middle Prong
http://hikingtotheheights.blogspot.com/2015/07/morning-meander-up-middle-prong.html
Hiking to the Heights. Tuesday, July 7, 2015. Morning Meander up Middle Prong. We had never met face-to-face, but what a wonderful time we had carrying on our friendship in real time! We decided on a simple walk up Middle Prong Trail, but it turned out to be much more than that! Within probably a third of a mile from the Middle Prong trailhead, the bridge makes its appearance as the trail makes a hard right turn to cross the creek. What stands before the unsuspecting hiker is a bridge unlike anything...

Hiking to the Heights. Thursday, June 26, 2014. Close Encounter of the Black Bear Kind. He never put the FJ in 4WD, but it was nice to know it was there if we needed it. The brand new bridge replaced only a couple days before we got here. One of many unbridged crossing on this hike. There's also a good video HERE. Young bull elk on Cataloochee Campground Road. We did not get out of the car because we were too close, but snapped a few pictures as we moved on up the road. What a day this had been! It's als...

Hiking to the Heights: January 2015
http://hikingtotheheights.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Hiking to the Heights. Saturday, January 31, 2015. Off Trail Adventuring- the Old Stone House. We were supposed to go up to find the old Appalachian Trail tunnel that is no longer in use, but since Newfound Gap Road was still closed due to snow and ice from the previous few days, we had to make a spontaneous change of plans. We new there would be no new miles today, but we just really needed some time in the mountains to shake away some cobwebs and stress from work. Links to this post. We parked the car ...

Hiking to the Heights. Sunday, December 29, 2013. Mt Sterling Fire Tower and Baxter Creek Trail. I am a junkie. I admit it; I take personal responsibility for it; I acknowledge it to all who ask or will listen; I'm not ashamed of it! I am an elevation junkie, pure and simple! The view from Mt. Sterling Trail early in the morning. On days like yesterday when the temperatures are moderate and there is minimal snow on the ground to make hiking treacherous, one of my favorite things to do is get high! One go...

Hiking to the Heights. Saturday, March 22, 2014. These waterproof lovelies weigh in at an amazing 1 lb. 9 oz. for the PAIR! They feel amazing on, so I'm thrilled to step out into a totally new venture for me. We will see how they do on the trail, but if I don't like them, I can always send them back to REI for a full refund. I'm not sure how they have a guarantee like that, and I've never used it before, but on something like this, it's a nice feeling of assurance. Links to this post. Links to this post.

Hiking to the Heights: June 2015

Hiking to the Heights. Tuesday, June 23, 2015. Unexpected Peril on Gunter Fork. Now that, my friends, is a dedicated hiker's husband! The Laurel Gap shelter appears relatively new when compared to the other shelters we've seen in these mountains with newer construction, non-leaking skylighted roofing, and even a thermometer! Aggressive bear activity had closed campsites 36 and 37 which we would walk right past on our way down Big Creek trail, but I don't think any bear in his right mind would have approa...

MyMtns – Random Ruminations From Where I Stand
Random Ruminations From Where I Stand. March 20, 2018. Reflections on Searching for a CEO. A few weeks ago, Dr. Jen Jones, president and CEO at Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont, told the Board of her plans step down this May in order to focus full time on some family needs with her aging parents. Bummer. Don’t get me wrong. I totally understand what she is doing. I respect her decision and am supportive in every way. But it’s still a bummer! As a Tremont board member, I drew the assignment of c...
