Smoked Meat Blog: A prompt, idea, and hope
http://thesmokedmeatblog.blogspot.com/2009/01/prompt-idea-and-hope.html
A prompt, idea, and hope. I haven't posted in a long time. I was going to write something about the genius of OutKast. Because their jams were basically the anthems of my January, but Dave decided to be a dick and do it first. That being said, Hip-Hop as a genre is still fair game. And I'm still going to reference OutKast. Andre 3000 proclaimed, "I'm out here knowing Hip-Hop is dead, the average nigger on my corner yelling what the fuck you mean? This is to say that it's no longer N'Sync. Now, the existe...

Smoked Meat Blog: THIS IS A POST ABOUT WILL OLDHAM
http://thesmokedmeatblog.blogspot.com/2009/01/this-is-post-about-will-oldham.html
THIS IS A POST ABOUT WILL OLDHAM. While I would never pretend to be a Will Oldham stan, I can say with certitude that he is one of the most revelatory and brilliant singer-songwriters (what a disgusting tag that is) working today. To listen to a Will Oldham production is to give yourself up to his mastery of songcraft and dense lyrical allusion and depth. His most recent album, Lie Down in the Light. Was an interesting turn, a considerably lighter affair than his last proper record, The Letting Go. It wa...

Slow Listening Movement: 03.09
http://slowlisteningmovement.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
One MP3 at a time- and no more. I've been listening to the playlist of the Q1 Top 40 posted. And suddenly things feel more in focus, musically, this year. That isn't to say they are, of course, though I'm proud to say I have only one full Lux and Ivy's Favorites. Yes, good writers galore, but having read nearly every issue cover to cover, many of its surface effects still put me off much of the time- tomorrow, who knows? A quick thing I forgot. Labels: worst record of 2009. Final Top 40 is here. Glory Da...

East Bay View (a blog about several things). Now 98% free of substantive content. Monday, February 28, 2005. Critical hits: Better load that shotgun, Stephanie. According to Movie City News. Critic Charles Taylor was fired last week, which means one of two things: either Salon. S broke yet again, or their new CEO Elizabeth Hambrecht is about to pull off her mask and reveal that she's really Lars van Trier. Poor Charley can't even try the Time Out. As a true exploitation movie. It's not that Van Sant ...

Friday, May 20, 2005. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist. And it's only May! Mild favorite for album of the year: Sleater-Kinney (yeah again,). Even though it's probably only their third best LP, it's getting to me more immediately than anything since. Wednesday, May 18, 2005.

East Bay View (a blog about several things). Now 98% free of substantive content. Monday, June 20, 2005. The crowd at Rilo Kiley at the Grand on Saturday was the most attractive I've ever seen at a gig, with that whole "We're geeks, but we try to hide it on weekends" sheen of anxious intelligence (as opposed to my "Yeah, I really should wash my hair" sheen of anxious indifference.) Even today, I'm still astonished. Also nice to see the Brunettes, though they're overdue for another really funny song.
